John Steinbeck’s collection of short stories, The Pastures of Heaven, is a little known work containing a very subtle and clever message.
I have no evidence that he was aware of the story of James C Cooney, and I’m not suggesting that’s what Steinbeck was referencing, but the overall pattern of the events bear uncanny similarities to each other.
