Music in this video includes track from OST for The Pathless and OST for Breath of the Wild. Special thanks to Joseph Anderson for letting small channels like mine use his footage, which is where I got all the BoTW footage. Absolute king shit.

One thing I think worth mentioning from the "what did BOTW bring to the table" discussion, is its very strong usage of layered, systemic gameplay elements that are utilized and threaded into nearly all parts of the game. Stuff like a sword being defined as "metal" and being able to drop it onto some electrified wires to complete a circuit, or lighting some grass on fire then cooking a chicken leg on it. There are dozens of emergent behaviors that result from experimenting with these systems, and its pretty extraordinary.

So a beautiful open world game with a strong art style, an incredibly fun movement system you can get lost in, (with a gliding upgrade that messes it up a bit), where the highlight of each area is a non replay-able sequence where you have to use said movement system to move faster than a unique apposing force, I will now be purchasing this game

A good way to view animism from in the Pathless is with the god Nimue. The game lets you stand in massive vantage points looking over long rivers. 6:50 might not watch the whole video yet for playing the game with a different mindset first BUT Thanks for pointing this out. One of my favorite video game features is when the action that's happening on screen isn't quite the action it really is, in another context. Like shooting an arrow = a button-based movement/rhythm mechanic. Off the top of my head, I think about Pikmin 3's pointer, Ring Fit's retro arcade controls, Spiritfarer's gameplay VS the narrative of what you choose to do, and Splatoon's floor inking.

I didn't mind the simplicity and accessibility either, since I knew it wanted to be experienced. I think an important aspect of the breath of the wild vibe that wasn't mentioned as much is the art style, many games that are accused of ripping botw off seem to also be ripping off that same kind of mildly cartoony, watercolor look (Edit: Which pathless and other games like it, journey, abzu, sky, also use and used first)

To expand on the BOTW comparisons thing, man, I think it's understandable that people compare things they don't know about to things they DO know about, like when people call literally any game that features a dodge mechanic and melee 3rd person combat "just Dark Souls", but: EVERYTHING has an inspiration. BOTW was inspired by certain games, Souls was inspired by certain games. If the only things you consider original are "whoever the first to do it was" then only 80s and 90s games should ever be called original.

The topic at 6:23 reminded me of the Core Design Tomb Raider games: Lara just auto aims at everything. "She don't miss" works in those games too, the ammo pickups and enemy health and behavior reflect that a lot; She has no Melee attack, so if bats or rats are scratching you, you had to manually aim at those small targets you'd be super annoyed and that's just be no fun. In this case the game becomes engaging because it doesn't get in your way and it lets you engage in a more balanced combat system where you only have to think about what weapon is good at this range or against this enemy type or in this combat arena. The Desert Eagle 1-shots most weak enemies but its ammo is rare or hidden in clever places. Shotgun does the same but you have to be close or most of the pellets will miss. MP5 and M16 let Lara auto-aim at enemies even further away and have high power, but will cancel their attack if you make sudden movements, not ideal for brawls where something like the Uzis shine. And so on. Last Revelation (TR4) introduced a scope to some weapons which allowed you to manually aim at faraway targets, but it was only used on weapons where you're shooting stuff far away, it was cool and makes me respect the design of those games just a bit more now. Their combat wasn't perfect (Harpoon Gun and Grenade Launcher being clumsy projectile weapons comes to mind) but Lara not missing became a foundation that got built on.

just a side-note; Botw was a fine game. But i definitely felt the repetedlyness. I ALSO felt like it lacked memorable NPCs and NPC quests - which has been a Zelda staple since forever. I can live with the seed hunting and shallow dungeons, but talking to an NPC and getting a "Take pictures of X X times" or "Gather 10 flowers for me" type of quest was the biggest killer of that game for me. The game was absolutely fine, except for that bit which really really sucked the joy out of it for me

It's not just the vertical movement and the game mechanics, people will also say a game is a breath of the wild clone even if the art style is similar too. Personally, I disagree with you on the movement. I kind of find it tedious to time each shot, but maybe I just haven't adapted to it enough yet. I think the game would benefit by adding a slight rumble to the controller right before the skill shot to help you time that one better, the one where you only charge the shot halfway. I just find the timing on it awkward and if you want to gain some real speed you have to hit a bunch of those skill shots in a row. I think the max I've done without practicing with it yet is four. They feel way better to hit than the normal shots just because they're faster. I hate how back and forth the movement is in this game where you wait to charge a shot and lose momentum. That's just me though, I don't really have any issues with the game otherwise, I do like it.

"...hopefully now that we've covered this, we can stop calling every game with a minimap Breath of the Wild..." Yeah, some have stop doing that, instead, they're calling it "Paid Genshin Impact clone" like what happened with Ubisoft's "Immortal: Fenyx Rising". This is really concerning because it could make games that have exploration like this tossed aside easily by potential audiences. Especially since there will also be another game with this much exploration like Tower of Fantasy that offers different experiences. But I think it still has its merit as being easily identified, I guess. Anyway, I see the game is really beautiful from design to realization and worth playing. But, the protagonist crop in the thumbnail makes me remember "Boohbah" for some reason. And I hope I can get this image out of my head...

I hate when people will discount a game because it's designed similarly to one they've played before. The idea of Intellectual property is the worst thing to exist as it disallows similarity in any way shape or form.
