Synopsis
Charlie competes with his fellow shop assistant. He is fired by the pawnbroker and rehired. He nearly destroys everything in the shop and himself. He helps capture a burglar. He destroys a client's clock while examining it in detail.

Yes. Very few old timer comedians are as funny as Chaplin. The one exception is Groucho Marx, but alot of that was due to more comedy options due to the invention of "talkies" allowing alot of funny verbal humor on top of visual slapstick humor, which Charlie was the master of. Groucho wasn't as good with visials but was a master of verbal hilarity. I feel sorry for anyone who was blind during the silent film age. At least afterwards like with the Marx bros films, a blind person could've still gotten alot of laughs from listening to Groucho's hilarity

After Chaplin topples over with the ladder, you can see a very thin metallic line and hook (like a fish hook) rebound around up high where Chaplin had been astride at the top of the ladder trying to clean the shop sign. Over the 5 and 6 mins mark, you can see that as Chaplin teases his audience by trying to walk the ladder closer to the sign, the fine spring-like hook serves to enhance the tottering ladder’s motions by aiding Chaplin’s recoveries - probably so that he does not spoil the scene by toppling over too early in the shoot if he had tried it without a ‘safety mechanism’. Certainly the line and hook play their part in making a dramatic scene even more dramatic (hair-raising enough for even the cop to sway back in mimicry, nearly toppling backwards himself). And I am sure with the risk of breaking a bone, it’s a scene that they did not want to shoot twice. As Charlie sways back you can see the back of his jacket lifted up slightly, the hook pulling him back the other way.
