Oh man, what you've done...Since I watched this video the last year, I've dreamed every day with this console. And today, FINALLY, I decided to go with it. I'm SO happy right now...I'm from Spain and here PC Engine is like somekind of myth. I've picked up a Core Grafx and a couple of games and now I'm the most poor guy in the neighbourhood, and the most happy as well!!! I've picked up Ninja Spirit, GunHed, and Bonk 1 and man...oh man. You've discovered to me a new universe!!

When I first came to Japan one of the first things I did was buy a PC Engine Duo-R. Five years and hundreds of games later and I'm still hooked on it and always finding new and interesting titles floating around out there.

PCE was my childhood memory, my 2nd console ever owned (My 1st was Famicom and its disk system). Like 2 years after I owned my PCE, I further bought the CD Rom2 "briefcase" and that amazing add on opened up my dream CD games library: YS 1&2, Fighting Street, Cobra, Wonder Boy, Far East of Eden etc. The CD quality music together with the vivid graphics made me hardly believed it's a 8-bit gaming console omg...it's totally comparable with its rival at that time - the SEGA Mega Drive! If NEC will ever remake this console I'll definitely buy it!

During the early 90s, I worked on several of the PC Engine games to localize them into English - a couple of the Bonk games, two sports games and Dungeon Master III: Theron's Quest. Excellent machine in its day.

I have a Turbo Duo that I inherited from my dad, with a whole bunch of games. My favorite one is called Magical Chase it is such a fun side scrolling shooter. Love them. He was a avid fan of Hudson games and collected as many as he could. The games are so much fun! Recently purchased a Super Console Cube X3 that has like 110,000 games from sixty consoles. There are PC engine titles from Hudson that I didn't even know existed, and they are fantastic to play. The titles my dad bought are on it also. Great video, happy gaming!! :)

I've not had one long and I have a modest 15 hucard complete games so far,but it's quickly becoming my favourite retro console. Awesome Johnny, I love my PC engines, especially my briefcase unit with the CD-ROM. Both of my machines are still working perfectly after all these years. The selection of games in Japan is massive. Like you said there are literally hundreds of games for just about any genre to collect for. Also for anyone looking for the games but not the system, the Wii still has quite a few on the virtual console and there are even a few available on psn for the PS3 and psp/vita.

+Otis Whitaker I can't stand it either. I'm not sure at what point the FPS become just "shooter," but we have decades of shooters prior, and "Shoot 'em Up" and "Shmup" just sounds ridiculous, like it's a Wild West game or something. Come on. They're shooters! Oh well.
@Harp00nX
@Harp00nX 9 лет назад
My rant on the subject: I still call shoot em ups shoot em ups (shmups is a retarded phrase that just shouldn't not be said out loud), don't let the shitty fps genre steal the title shoot em up away from it's rightful owner. Make people call those games first person shooters or third person shooters or doom clones whatever but fps lovers can fuck off trying to steal shoot em ups from a game genre that has been called that since the 70s.
@JesseDylanMusic
@JesseDylanMusic 9 лет назад
+Barry's World I'd honestly never even heard them called "shoot 'em ups" until fairly recently. To me, they were always shooters, since Galaga or Space Invaders. Doom and the like were first-person shooters, and X-Wing and the like were space combat simulators or something along those lines. :)

What struck me as nuts was having all those Sega titles on the Engine. Outrun, Alterbeast, and Afterburner to name a few. Also some other solid arcade ports were Operation Wolf, Double Dragon 2 and Chase HQ. I've been wrestling with selling off my game collection and the hardest is going to be the PC/Turbo stuff. I'm probably one of the few people that have their original Turbo games complete and mint (outer cardboard boxes) still plus I have a ton of sealed PC Engine games.

+Paul Rhodes If I just wanted to play the games, I'd get an emulator on PC and download the ROMs. And to be honest, I do that sometimes. Mostly to check out an expensive retro-game before I buy it, but also because I can't afford a fraction of the games I want. But as for collecting games, I want the original ones only. I don't see the point in collecting unoriginal games. :-)

It's amazing that the PC Engine came out in 1987. I suddenly realized I had never once played a PC Engine game which is something I fixed in early 2014. Bonk's Adventure surprised me with how fun and well designed it was. Shortly after, I decided to pick up a few of the base units, as the original white system and the two Core Grafx models are so beautifully designed. I had a Master System growing up, so the cards didn't surprise me, but the HuCards are fun to collect. You put it so well pointing out how very Japanese the system is, and it's fun to take chances on obscure, inexpensive HuCards and seeing how the games are. It's funny you put this video up now as I was just planning to investigate some strange games I haven't played much yet as well as seeing what other games are available from the sellers I like. Great video, HCG. I definitely agree that the PC Engine rocks.

I didn't learn about the system until a Homestar Runner cartoon mentioned it about ten years ago. The TG16 was sort of before my time. I'm old enough to remember when the SNES and Genesis were still current, but I was just a little kid. My only exposure to video games was what I got to play and see firsthand, and what I saw in commercials. I didn't start learning to read until 1994, so I wouldn't have been able to read about it in gaming magazines even if I knew those magazines existed. I didn't have any older brothers or cousins or anything like that around who could have mentioned it, either. Relatively obscure stuff like this, the Jaguar, AES, Lynx, etc were a complete unknown until I got into high school and was able to both use the internet more often and read the stash of old game magazines that my art teacher had lying around.

Great point, for many systems, the region you want is based on where it was popular. Definitely buy a PC Engine or a Japanese Saturn if collecting for those consoles. But for Genesis, N64, or XBox, western is the way to go. Fortunately, there are many cheap adapters and plug-and-play devices that make any system region free.

R-Type, Soldier series, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Gate/Lords of Thunder, that were where it was, man. I had PC Engine CD from France (because only France had "proper" PAL release with SCART conversion) and for a long time only 2 games, Soldier Blade and Rondo of Blood. I am sucker for arcade conversions, that is why I have Sega Saturn and love Mega Drive, and PC Engine was arcade conversion heaven, best version of Street Fighter 2, best version of Double Dragon, best version of R-Type and so on. Ys series started on PC Engine!

That big as console attachment just seems amazing to me... Like the Gameboy Player for GameCube... or the Switch with the little Joy Cons sliding out.

Thumbs up! Yeah, don't care at all for the term shmups... I call 'em SEU's. Shoot 'Em Ups. Another great video, thank you very much. Oh, I think your funny voice is very good. Great fun. Maybe you could do some prank callings in your show... :)

Cool video, I always had a love for 'TG16' as well, I scored my first one when I was about 18, I traded a paintball gun/marker for the Turbo Graphx 16 with Bonk, Galaga '90 & Keith Corurage. Later I scored a Turbo Duo & I still have one with about a dozen games. I liked your Shinobi game, I need to score one now! I have a PC Engine converter for TG16 (they cost about $100 now!?!) I glad you showed much love to Ninja Spirit, awesome & hard game! BTW if you ever get back to Waikiki, I owe you a beer! If we dont meet up, try going to Kona Brewing company & get a variety sampler.

+HappyConsoleGamer in the minute 16:23 there's an amazing game, it's a Jacky Chan game :D. It's also available in NES, but it looks awesome in PC-Engine :)

I owned the Turbo-Graphx 16 at the time, but I always wanted the imported PC Engine because it was so much cooler looking.

Had my coregrafx for about a month now, having loads of fun with a whole new library of games to explore. Wish this awesome system was brought to the UK in vast quantities when I was a kid back in the day. Only person I knew who had one back then was an American lad I was at school with who lived at the local airbase lol.

Soldier blade and Lords of Thunder!!! -- epic pulls, John. I've always stuck to the US TG games as I'm actually going for a complete collection -- insane, I know but I'm getting close. But since the CD is region free, after seeing this video, maybe I'll look into picking up some of the imports. Thanks for this video.

...and the last thing to buy for the PC Engine is the Turbo Everdrive (for the American games) and the Analogue Duo (for the CD games)...

I commented on this video 2 years ago. Guess what? We’ve got 3 of the things now and love them. I’ve wanted one since 1987 but you just couldn’t buy them easily in the UK. Easily one of the best consoles of its time. Even today it’s a very playable machine.

Ninja Spirit is amazing! Really dark atmosphere, great music, awesome powerups and some crazy bosses! I think I prefer the PC Engine version over the arcade original?!

I usually play RPGs for that system(on my emulator of course) such as Momotaro Densetsu Turbo/2/Gaiden.What's so special about MomoDen Turbo is that the game itself is a PCE adaptation of the game for the FamiCom(Japanese NES) and it had changed dramatically adding new contents(including new events, dungeons, enemies, even bosses) while other contents have been removed(headgear- and accessory-type equipments, some enemies and some events),some rewards and puzzles switch places and the final boss being made much harder(like 4000 HP).If you're up for a challenge, i recomend the PCE version.

i only have 3 games for my jamma-pc engine, but the one i enjoy the most is galaga 88. it is such a simple and limited shooter compared to the others, but it is just so much fun.

I'll bet you're wondering why the cover of "Double Dungeons" has a big "W" on it. In Japan, "W" is often used instead of "double". A burger with an extra patty on it might be called a "W burger" on the menu, but it'd be pronounced "double burger", for example.
