Hey everyone! Here's another episode of Scales & Tales with 'The Pentatonic Connection.' I recently posted 'The Power Of 5' lesson a few days ago and received a lot of feedback/messages from viewers that let me know it really helped them see how to approach practicing this beyond-common scale differently. So, I wanted to add this lesson hot-on-the-heels of the previous episode, which moves even deeper into understanding just how important and eye-opening this simple five-note scale actually is.
This lesson begins with a few additional ideas to help you practice this scale differently, which will also help you get away from being stuck in the fingering "boxes" that guitarists commonly find themselves trapped in. This includes learning to arrange this scale on a single string, in addition to arranging the notes on a single string so you can view where the elusive five fingering shapes are built.
From there, we're actually hitting the "connection" part of this lesson, which focuses on how the five-note pentatonic scale can be transformed into six of the most common/popular seven-note scales/modes from the major scale. As you'll see, the minor pentatonic can easily be changed into Aeolian, Dorian, and Phrygian - since the five notes of pentatonic also happen to live within these three popular scales. After we've hit minor scale conversions, we can perform a similar series of conversions using the major pentatonic scale and uncover Ionian, Lydian, and Mixolydian in the process.
Needless to say, if you watched the previous lesson The Power Of 5, are a player searching for more information/ideas/tips surrounding this extremely common scale, are curious how a five-note pentatonic scale can be transformed into various seven-note major/minor scales, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

I like how you connect the pentatonics to the modes. I haven't really thought about it in those terms before, but it make sense. I need to watch this video a couple more time to really absorb this...Thanks!

Definitely an eye opening video. Thanks to you I’m starting to piece everything together. The fretboard is looking smaller and smaller to me. I would love a video where you teach how you name the chords so quickly and effortlessly. I sometimes get the names and sometimes I struggle.

LATE NIGHT, you can also do a cheat sheet Dorian penta = minor pentatonic add 6, Phrygian Penta = minor pentatonic add b2, Lydian penta = major pentatonic add#11, Mixolydian penta = Major pentatonic add b7. When you add in these Modal Leading Tones its call Adaptive pentatonic scale. The Adaptive is adding in & to the pentatonic. Its like Phrgyian Dominant Penta = major pentatonic add b2 & add b7 is someone is playing a Dom7b9 chord for the V chord you use this scale. Harmonic Minor Pentatonic = minor penta add b6 & natural 7th ( Augmented 2nd interval ) works over III Augmented chords and V chords

This video was an absolute revelation to me (haven't really taken many lessons). The entire concept of modes, and where the pentatonic scale came from has never been clearer to me. That was a perfect demonstration of both. Thank you so much!

A very, very high value lesson. In fact, I’d say this is most essential RU-vid guitar video I’ve seen in ages. The only thing I’d add is which major scale of another key a mode relates to.

Good stuff. Expanding on that into licks, I always thought of it as using the diatonic notes as "within" my pentatonic/blues licks. As in, i'm squeezing that note within the normal lick. Atleast in the beginning. Weaving those licks into the other shapes is a whole-nother lesson. Guthrie Govan and Marty Friedman are the guys for that. Marty specifically has a great way of sticking with how the melody moves, almost like he's loosely cascading the melody when he's loosely sequencing up or down the scale or weaving to the next "box". Slash is pretty solid at weaving those licks into the next positions

Dave, Whats Goin on man.... Thanks for the late night lesson. The "Penta Weave" hair cut 😂 Dats Funny Dude!!!! Im a huge S.R.V fan and I'm sure you know the track "S.R.V Speaks" He says just play from your heart and let it come out dont play from your mind....Unfortunately that hasn't worked for me as well as I had hoped 😂 Anyhow, been working on this Dominant 22:56 Arpeggio approach and that to has broken me out of the straight Penta playing. Love your lessons... Hey BTW do you live in FLA? Do you teach lessons here? Thought I heard you say you were in Florida. ✌️

David, Not sure if you covered this concept ... Instead of a traditional pentatonic blue scale in each different positions .. If I use a five note scale Except they were all based on the modes? Which 5 notes / degree would be best to bring out the Phrygian mode? 1,3,b4,5,7 .. ? Or Locrian? Do better explain, To use the modes as pentatonic - Degrees would I use to bring out the flavor of each mode ? Instead of. Using all seven Thank u

Hey, that's a more advanced idea, but definitely worth exploring. I created an entire modal series last year in the Scales & Tales series, and each video talks about the strong scale tones within each mode and the chords that imply the sound/tonality. Those videos would help, so I'll see what I can do about creating something like this in the future. "Modal Pentatonic Scales" or something like that. Thanks and ROCK ON!

If people would’ve payed attention to the power of 5 video and actually watched it they would’ve learned something and saw that at one point you did play through and show the pentatonic scale positions. You showed everyone the 5 notes that make up the scale and even had a diagram where the root note was for the key you were in so it shouldn’t have been difficult for anyone.
