Lady if you vote for Trump your democracy is gone and you will have a totalitarian state and my country will be building a wall to keep you out.@@susanray8811
Finally he's free. I think he stayed in the marriage at first out of loyalty to the woman he married years ago. In the last few years, I think he stayed as long as he did for the protection and support of his children from a horrible situation.
@user-te6eo1gw9l "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies." ~ Andy Dufresne, Shawshank Redemption (1994). Cheers to you! 💙 🌊
I love that a country that can send crafts to the Moon, Mars and interstellar space seemingly cannot put a former president in the clink just because he has a few Secret Service bodyguards...throw a few extra cots in his cell and Bob's your uncle!
Much easier for Secret Service to protect Trump if he’s incarcerated than if he’s out running around free. Secret service people. can rotate in and out two or three days in, two or three days off and so on. Should be easy!
Awesome intellectual discourse. A real pleasure to watch. So refreshing to see a really informed discussion rather than the shallow garbage chit chat on CNN, et al. I concur with the the other Comment from my fellow Canadian - America keep your democracy, the free world needs America's leadership!
George Conway looks great since he dropped Kelley Anne, his diet is working well too. He’s very good at nailing Trump on his legal issues and explaining his treason.
Love it……I don’t understand how he got away with it for so many years, and now he feels as though he’s been persecuted unfairly? Clearly his brain is wired differently than the rest of us…….love your group of well versed pros …….
His brain may well be wired different. That might not be a problem if he weren’t also dangerous to our democracy and to the world at large. But the damage is already done. It will take generations to undo it.
He has gotten away with it for decades simply because he was allowed to. The same laws at play in the DC civil case could have been exercised pretty much anytime in the last 35 years.
i'm not trying to defend him but his parents messed him up really bad and then let him loose with 100 million dollars in the 1980's (375 million in today's dollars). his Ego is fragile, he's as needy a person as i've ever seen, has no guardrails because we humans automatically value people by their net worth and he has no trouble lying from whole cloth on the spot. he knows how to manipulate but he truly is crumbling. i don't think he will be the nominee. i think people that supported him might just stay home during the primaries. fingers crossed...but the others running are really dangerous too.
he could take too many people down with him. NY is very corrupt. he knows too much. i believe this is also why he is still so hard to take down. there are very powerful, connected people who have good reason to pull strings for him . i wondered about the last Manhattan DA. he sat on that stormy Daniel's and corrupt banking/tax evasion case and never did get around to indicting him. that bought trump years worth of time to let the clock run.@@davidf4897
Perhaps it is a good sign, that before this panel met, the knowledge that Mark Meadows had made an immunity agreement was not yet public. That there is a cabal of the hard Right that is willing to circumvent our institutional processes in order to hold on to power is something we should all be very afraid of and paying close attention to.
I enjoyed this discussion; thank you so much to everyone involved. I would like to throw in my two bits regarding this situation, and I have so many thoughts on Trump and his deeds that I will limit myself to just two aspects. (a) Trump is the epitome of Justice in the U.S. not being "blind"! Anyone, anyone with half a brain, can see many instances where they themselves would have been indicted but in his case, he skated! Countries with much more history than the U.S. (and perhaps more respect for the rule of law), have charged and imprisoned their former heads of state! Some heads of state charged, convicted, and imprisoned just in the last 20 years include Jacques Chirac, former Prime Minister of France; Lee Wan-koo, former Prime Minister of South Korea; Ehud Olmert, former Prime Minister of Israel; Silvio Berlusconi, former Prime Minister of Italy; José Sócrates, former Prime Minister of Portugal; Carlos Menem, former President of Argentina; and the list goes on! Follow the lead set by those and many, many other countries...hold everyone to the same standards! (b) As a New Yorker, I've known of this man for decades, and for decades, I've considered him contemptable. Everything that is being made public now only serve to reinforce that opinion! I am convinced that those who support him may be divided into three groups: (a) the poorly educated, (remember, in 2016, polls showed he was supported by that group, and he even said that he loved them); (b) the xenophobes, anti-Semites and white supremacists, who recognize him as one of them; and (c) the well-educated, ambitious but morally lacking persons who would love to emulate the oligarchs, (as in Putin's Russia)! I am convinced that if Trump were to ever attain the presidency again, it would be the end of democracy in America! Trump, and those succeeding him, would be the American versions of Putin, Xi or Kim!
I like your three extra points and wholeheartedly agree with them. Everyone has to do their absolute best to make sure he never gets near the Oval Office again otherwise America is a goner!
Trump is a dictator figurehead who has a lot less LIFE time left to do the damages Xi, Kim and Putin have done. He started his full-bore political shenanigans late in his life. At age 77 1/2 he ain't getting any younger, saner or stronger. It's the YOUNGER guy he designates to take his place who makes me worry for our futures. I don't know who that is yet. Probably one of his disgusting sons.
I think a 4th group could be unquestioning believers, whom Trump targets with his Biblespeak (both OT and NT). He spends all his hours concocting stories; and fiction asks the audience to suspend their disbelief. It’s no accident that some of his most fervent fans are evangelists, not only well practiced in suspending disbelief, but raised on televangelism.. How like a televangelist he is, with his gilt furniture, voluptuous false eyelashed (and everything else) wife, and cure-alls for $10!: “I’ll send you a wee baggie of holy water [or a trading card with my signature].”…” I am the chosen one, indicted for you. I am your retribution. I’ll save both your soul and your bacon.” I fully expect him to come up with some Trump-trademark beverage that he’ll sell with: “This is my blood, sweat and tears. Drink this in memory of me.”
I agree that our institutional resistance to putting Trump in jail does not map with what other countries have done. Thanks for pointing that out. Sadly, this self-image of America as "unique" which leads to an "it can't happen here" belief is in the way of our institutions treating Trump as the danger to democracy that he truly is. And my criticism extends to the news industry, which continues to report on election 2024 using a "horse race" mindset... "Democrats vs Republicans". I pray mainstream news snaps out of this past-based stupor and begins reporting on election 2024 as "democracy vs authoritarianism". If they don't, I fear enough voters will not recognize the danger we face and vote for Trump because some journalist convinces them that Biden is "too old".
Of course he can be jailed if he gets convicted (which he should be). Not jailing him just because he in some miraculous way won the election would show utter contempt for the presidency. Do Americans really accept a fellon in the Oval office??!
That is what I cannot understand either. In Britain, Australia, New Zealand, ? Canada. PMs can be removed by acting up in office. A PM who went on TV and mocked a Disabled Journalist in a rant would have the people and the Newspapers calling him out and would have to resign or fall on his sword. Trump did that and went on to destroy your Country and now he is running again. He is a threat to your Country. Dear God this cannot be happening????🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
You underestimate the power trump will have if elected, he would twist the law, place lackys in positions of power etc etc He knows now there is only one way to avoid prison, and that is to be re-elected There is great danger hanging over our nation
Loved David’s description and analogy of disgorgement- taking $100 from the till, winning $1000 in Atlantic City, then putting $100 back in the till before anyone discovers it was gone.
yes! that is absolutely the only way to break the cycle. i've been hoping he would be jailed for breaking the gag order for this very reason. the problem with that is that he is running for president and has to be allowed to campaign. it was really a tactical move to run for president. he is so annoyingly hard to take down. people have to vote. that's our only hope at this point. he knows how to work the system using chaos.
Super panel! What resonates with me is that they all speak authentically ... even when it is not necessarily in their own/their political best interest. A great balance of views ... great discussion. Thanks to all for this.
The woman mentioning "advice of counsel" defense for Chump is simply wrong about it being a good defense for Chump. Numerous top legal experts have stated that an "advice of counsel" defense won't work for a lot of legal reasons. But first of all, it is highly unlikely that Chump will even invoke that defense because it requires that he waive attorney-client confidentiality if he does invoke it ... thus all Chump-attorney communications become subject to discovery and review by the prosecution. Further, a number of his attorney's have already pleaded guilty to various charges and a felon attorney is not a credible witness. The bottom line is that expert legal opinion s that "advice of counsel" defense is not a viable alternative for Chump.
@@sarahhearn-vonfoerster7401 There is a WIDE open border...and I, as most people here in Chicago, am sick and tired of hearing this lie that illegals are "migrants". We did not have 44 (and more coming) "migrant" camps here in Chicago before Biden opened the border wide open to all.
@@imperialmotoring3789no, we’ve moved on from Trump. The Budget includes nearly $25 billion for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an increase of almost $800 million over the 2023 enacted level when controlling for border management amounts.
When Trump use the defence that he acted on the advice of his advocates, he looses his client privilege. And the advocates have to hand over all communications between them and Trump. I’m pretty sure there will be enough evidence in there.
The scariest thing so far is Trump stating he didn’t take an oath to support the constitution. That there in a nutshell says it all and explains his behavior as president.
"Get out the vote! You win elections when you GET OUT THE VOTE!" ~ David Cay Johnston. I really enjoyed this discussion, and I think that what David Cay Johnston hit on when he said that is the most important point made in this half hour. GET OUT THE VOTE!! Our democracy depends on it.
He's not sleepy if he knows what he's talking about; Trump never knows what he's talking about, and he's too into himself. Two people in his administration said "He's a F...... IDIOT"! @@jackaubrey8614
One of the best comments (see below) is this... "Why don’t people talk about Trump saying, before the election, that if he losses the election it is fixed. He kept saying that several times."
If Trump is a criminal, I don’t understand how the Republicans can’t get ahead of this and find a better and healthy Republican to get behind and support?
They are no longer Conservative Republicans...they are TeaParty nihilists. They swore to rebuild the entire government as a religious authoritarian single Party ....no need to vote anymore 😪!
The Republicans have lost their rational mind. Just take a look at the House, they only have one goal, and that is to shit in Joe Biden’s mess kit as directed by Dementia J. Trump.
Im gonna be so upset if he gets off on the Jan 6 case. Its appalling hes not in prison for life already.Hes playing the persecuted victim yet this country wont survive 4 more years of Trump.
Georgie Conway Pudding and Pie. Went on TV and made Trump cry. Roughed Trump up with a few choice words. I think we ought to give Trump to the Kurds. I, for one, would sigh with relief. What a terrible Commander in Chief.
Rebecca was right when she said she was being doom and gloom! Hoping she is wrong! Please come back with this panel when cases move on so we can see who was right.
What worries me the most, is that no one is comparing the social and economic climate (& world situation) when Hitler came to power and the similarities today with Trump. No one is warning Americans.
How crazy does this “smart” businessman have to be in order to attack the judge (and the judge’s wife and chief clerk BEFORE the judge decides the “remedy”/punishment?! It boggles the mind.
Nothing is set in concrete, so don't celebrate too soon. Yes, Trump SHOULD be forced to pay a minimum of $250m... but it still remains to be seen if he is ACTUALLY made to pay and whether or not he DOES pay. We can only hope that justice will be done and that the crook is made to pay the money he has defrauded.
I would like it if The New Republic would have a "group talk" or semi- town hall gathering, similar to this, with all those men and women whom Trump called the "Very Best" that resigned or Trump asked them to resigned or fired explain what it was like working for Trump!
George mentioned the trial repeating, but those that insisted on speedy trial have already flipped. The prosecution has insisted the rest will be tried together, and they are getting the screws slowly turned. I think the chances are high that enough will flip that the rest won't matter.
It’s easier to prevent a conflagration than to extinguish it! Why aren’t we respecting the 14th amendment? Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana should have been removed before he became speaker of the House!
I'm 20 minutes into this panel discussion and i have to say it has me quite depressed! I mean, they started off well enough but last almost 10 minutes it's like they're finding so many reasons for that fellow to get away with things! Especially the lady panellist - of course they're all qualified to assess and opine and i know nothing about Law so I'm not making a criticism but just saying that all the more I'm very disheartened hearing them... her especially...😓😩
First time of ever seeing this podcast show. It is very good. It is nice and short. I like that cause with age my attentions span is short. The panel is full of wisdoms of their fields. I will follow for more content.
Rebecca is dead on when she correctly notes that the underlying issue Re Federalism is that the DOJ reports directly to the President. As Trump has clearly demonstrated, the President- if he wishes-can completely control the Attorney General and the DOJ. (And don’t forget the President controls the FBI, the CIA, NSA and the military.) We should discuss another way for the DOJ to be more independent accountable and transparent.
“Lock him up “ Don’t allow Trump to be in any political office ever again. Don’t allow Trump to Be a businessman in NYC . George you look great , I have always admired your intellect and glad to see you are surviving your personal life “Trials.”you’ve got Moxie !
Trump family as a business no longer exists. It's only a matter of who will be allowed to buy the properties. Any monies received are already owed to the court in fines . Hurrah!
I can’t believe how shallow some of these NY prosecutors are like this lady saying how the Ga case is problematic because of it complexity… Fani Willis knows what she is doing and she’s got criminals in that conspiracy flipping damn near every day.. 😂 Maybe it’s just professional jealousy or something else…
First a special grand jury and then a regular grand jury had no trouble both comprehending the case in all its complexity, but also absolutely no problem INDICTING every bloody one of them, and both of those on the evidence the prosecutors had at the time. They have even more evidence now with the four people who have flipped
Question: The cost and danger to jail Trump is enormous. The Constitution supports banishment as a legal form of punishment. Their have been many legal banishments dispensed over the years. So why not exile Trump to some country that will accept him for a set duration. This will save millions of dollars while calming the citizens. "out of sight out of mind". Much better than his face in the news and possible riots while giving Republicans a chance to rebrand.
This is an on-going insurgency by many that will not end with just Trump going; however, it will slow it down for awhile. If he is just exiled, he has the money that it will not mean anything bad for him and he can just live the same lifestyle without penalty somewhere else. Also the next person who wants to overthrow our government will have no reason not to try.
They're all great, but the whole thing rather depressed me - nothing new was illuminated. What we really need is a panel of the world's foremost social psychologists and cult deprogrammers who can advise us on the right way to reconnect with cultist family members. There are definitely wrong ways, so this would be very helpful.
great deal of pessimism on my purtely anecdotal experience with an entire family of Trump supporters.....Asked my Mother the other day why she would never consider voting for Biden.....her reply? "Because he is a serial liar". End of comment, end of that discussion. Its turtles all the way down
16:55, I don't think each defendant is responsible for "knowing" if they were all part of a larger conspiracy, the issue is that they were part of a larger conspiracy and that we hope is what can be proven. It doesn't matter at all if each individual were aware of the larger conspiracy.
