Hey @theshineshack. Appreciate your tutorials. Abit if a newbie here. Ive been making homemade wine for about 10 years and wanted to start distilling grappa. I purchased a 13 galon distiller kit. What is your advice for discarding distill head on a wine (used as mash) thats about 12-14 %abv. I seen alot online that say its all about taste smell, some even light it on fire to see the colour of the flame to prevent methane consumption. Based off your experience how many ml normally is discarded before the hearts arive? Last quick question how do i know when i reach the tails? Appreciate your time sir

I talk about this a lot in my videos as I'm running I don't trust the flame thing or none of that when I run 20 gallons of mash depending on what's in it and the ABV I pull 2-3 quarts of heads off and I never collect tails I don't use them for anything so I don't waist the propane to run them off but I never give a set amount I believe that is not correct at all it changes so much from run to run depending on many factors is it fruit or grain mash did you use sugar what's your ABV of the mash etc its one of them things it takes time to learn but I always go by taste, touch and smell also you can dilute 50/50 with water as you make cuts to make it easier to taste the difference if that helps over time you will be able to see the difference when your in your heads it will taste super harsh very fiery it will smell super volatile like paint thinner, acetone etc if you rub it on your hands it will feel like it evaporates really fast as you get into hearts it will be smoother on the palet taste sweeter and want be so fiery and hot also it want smell so harsh it want feel like it evaporates so quickly off your hands as you get to tails usually between 100-90 proof it will taste horrible and smell like wet cardboard or even wet dog you will definitely notice a change it will feel really oily on your hands sometimes you can even see the oil floating on top of the product over time you will learn this very well it took me awhile to learn it but you dont have to make cuts on the fly. You can always put a lid on it, number your jars and go back at it the next day or the day after that if you have to. You can also 50/50 dilute your spirit with water to really open it up and get a better sense of what it tastes or what it smells like. Just do the best you can. Do you have any further questions? You can message me on the website? Redshineshack.com I get a direct message from that to my email? Hope this helps..Shine On

Hey Red! Got a question about corn mash. Do you push your cap down once a day like you do with fruit?
@TheShineshack
@TheShineshack Месяц назад
I don't with grains I just let it roll without doing anything I only knocked the cap down once a day if I'm doing a brandy or fruit-based Mash

Great videos brother..as usual..what is the yield on a 10gal pot?
@TheShineshack
@TheShineshack Месяц назад
Thanks I appreciate your support it really all depends on a bunch of variables the ABV of your mash and how you make your cuts but usually anywhere from 1/2 - 1 gallon of good hearts

Ok a couple of questions. A couple months ago at the federal level it was deemed that distilling for personal consumption is now legal. Hear anything about that? Also I have been watching you for along time now and I was wondering if you would go bigger ? I have an 18 gallon still and makes my time worth it but I am thinking about going bigger. My question to you is how big would you go for personal use? Thanks for the videos and keep it up
@TheShineshack
@TheShineshack 6 дней назад
I haven't heard of anything like that to my current knowledge. Distilling for personal use to drink. It is illegal on the federal level. There are some states that are legalizing it though. I believe Virginia is one of them, but on the federal level it's still illegal unless you get a fuel alcohol permit, but you still have to denature it to where you can't drink it but what they don't know won't hurt them right 😂 I think all that's crazy. It should be legal if you can make beer and wine. Why can't we turn that beer and wine into shine? But anyway I do have a 30 gallon still that's about the biggest I would go your return off of that. On average it is about 3 gallons of high proof, sometimes 3 1/2 of good clean alcohol. After cuts By the time you proof that down to about 100 or 110 proof you're at about 4 1/2 -5 gallons. I personally wouldn't go any bigger than that. It cost more money to make that Mash more money to run your stilll, more money on ingredients and sugar and fruit and grain I would even consider running a 50 gallon still on occasion but you got to keep in mind the amount of money it's going to take to make your mashes and stuff also depends on are you filling a barrel or have the means to consume the larger amount

I love my still I bought from them. Only thing I wish they would have done is when I asked for 4" tri-clamp on thumper. I wish they would have moved the lines from pot to thumper and to worm back some. they left them in normal spot and it is a real pain to get the tri-clamp on.
