Here is solo #11 from Advanced Snare Drum Studies by Mitchell Peters.
This up tempo piece is one of the most difficult solos in the book. It contains very intricate rhythms at several dynamic levels along with many types of dynamic/rhythmic rolls. It makes a great audition piece as it shows off your technique, rhythmic prowess, a wide dynamic range and lots of rolls. Pay special attention to the dead bars written in a ¼ time signature as well as the tempo relationships as the piece changes meters several times.
You will want to plan your stickings very carefully as one false move will cause things to crash and burn quickly.
I am performing the solo at the maximum notated tempo of quarter note =126
The programmed click moves between subdivided 8th notes and quarter notes.
I am presenting two versions of the solo here: one with a click track and one without the click track.
The snare drum I am using is a 14"x 5" special edition maple Pearl Philharmonic drum with a mix of cable steel and curly snares. The batter head is a Lefima calf head. I am using a small piece of leather to slightly muffle the drum. The sticks are barrel tipped leopard wood that are 70 grams. I make these sticks myself and sell them.
