Put a small piece of wood between the saw and the body of the knife, you can close the saw down on it and safely strike your ferro rod on the spine.

Nice to see you guys on the American Continent using these knifes as well. They are absolutely awesome. German here and proud of our engineering, but when it comes to reliable detail work, our swiss neighbours are the real wizards. I have a Forester and to this day i carry it in my pocket, since the day i got it.
@Constable.Chauvin
@Constable.Chauvin 7 месяцев назад
I also have a Forester but i only carry it on hiking trips because knifes are illegal here in eastern europe. Do you live in the woods or just not follow the law?
@madtownangler
@madtownangler 6 месяцев назад
I would move if I had a stupid law like that....where I live you can carry any knife or sword you want and a handgun or rifle as long as they are not concealed. We have had one major killing in this entire state in my lifetime of over fifty years so that is not a problem. We have over a half million people out here during the deer rifle season too. We have had one crazy Hmong guy shoot a bunch of people during the deer season out of self defense.
@Constable.Chauvin
@Constable.Chauvin 6 месяцев назад
@@madtownangler believe me I'd move to America tonight if i could. But getting a visa is very hard. We don't even have a right to self-defense here in Romania, there was a famous case of a pilot shooting a gypsy for breaking into his house in the middle of the night and he still went to jail.
@S7orm89
@S7orm89 2 года назад
A safer way to strike a ferro rod with a non-locking saw is to keep the saw teeth down inside the tinder, and pull the ferro rod towards you. As a bonus, the sparks strike closer to the bundle and avoid the risk of pushing away the bundle with your blade.

I just got one from my brother for Xmas and so far I love it! It is gorgeous and the walnut handle scales really give it a high-quality feel. One thing to note: with the bottle opener/flathead screwdriver tool, when you're using it as a screwdriver and press hard on the screw, it locks the tool! Victorinox knives made in Delémont, Switzerland with the bottle opener/screwdriver (even the small one) have that feature. The Delémont knives used to be the Wenger brand. Also, I recommend putting mineral oil on the handle scales and letting it set for a few hours, Then, wipe off the excess and the handle will feel nice and silky,

Place the saw with the teeth down next to your tinder pile & pull the ferro rod back over the top of the saw. Excellent sparks that stay in one place & aren't scattered around with your tinder bundle when you strike towards the finder/kindling/fire source.

I've used the corkscrew to soften the dirt so I could stick in a 🔥 . You don't want a wide area of soft ground so 🤷 unless you brought a hammer to and a tent peg , a simple corkscrew will soften just right amount of dirt to push in a strong stick or mosquito repelling 🔥 torch.

The Victorinox saw is fantastic for crafting compared to the Bahco, its teeth are finer and sharper :D The saws spine is so incredebly usefull! Its a Carrot Peeler, Fat wood Shaver and a good improvised Firesteel striker! I use my saws spine to scrape gunk of off stuff all the time!

That's a beautiful knife and "Camping Knife '' is a perfect description for it. With that fancy hat, gourmet cuisine, wine bottle with a real cork, and now that pretty knife, you are venturing vary close to Glamping territory! The locking blade and the large saw blade are nice features. Also, that was a nice mod on the bottle opener, which is just about the least useful tool on any multitool IMO. But at least they combined a flat head screwdriver and a wire stripper on the same tool. Plus, I don't know what else they could put in that area, so the space is not actually wasted. Many bottles now are twist off, and there are easy ways to pop a bottle cap off in a pinch without a bottle opener. It's handy for a Glamping or tailgating knife though. The Victorinox Ranger Grip at $80 also has wooden grips, it would definitely tempt me if it had a Phillips head screwdriver! My vehicle is usually only a short distance away from my hunting camp, so lack of tools is not usually an issue for me in deer camp. Admittedly, I am more oriented towards EDC or having a tool that has maximum usefulness that I can carry in a small pack, or throw in luggage for use on a trip. So a Phillips screwdriver is more useful to me personally than the corkscrew because when I'm in the field I've used the Phillips head to disassemble fishing reels and to repair different things. In an emergency, and having a bottle of wine but no corkscrew definitely qualifies as an emergency, one can use a stick or screwdriver to push the cork into the bottle rather than trying to drawing the cork out. Of course then you have to finish the bottle since you can't use the cork to reseal it. But HEY, in tough times you gotta do what you gotta do! One could also plan accordingly and select a bottle with a screw top. I hate to admit it, but when traveling we sometimes resort to carrying the small, plastic single serving bottles as they are lighter, easier to pack and one can open them as needed over a few days. I suppose one could even reuse them in a pinch. Some parks and other areas also prohibit glass containers, so we blame "The Rules" for our choice of déclassé wine. I don't think that I would look half as good as you in that amazing hat, so I probably need a fancy knife like yours to add to my cover. I have owned a Swiss Army Knife for many years, but I never treated it like a it was a serios tool. Instead, since it does have a corkscrew, it has lived a somewhat neglected life,; usually only seeing occasional use when thrown into my checked luggage. I never really thought of Swiss Army Knives as serious tools until recently when I binge watched some videos by you and others using them to actually accomplish something or to make things. I have a lot more appreciation for them as serious tools now than I did in the past. The scissors and the awl on Victorinox tools are outstanding. While small, the scissors are high quality and precise, and they will cut tough items such as fingernails, unlike many small scissors on other tools. Also, their awl is longer than on most other tools, it has an eyelet, and it is very sturdy. I like the file, pliers, and wire cutter on most Leatherman Tools an awful lot, but I also see the usefulness of a SAK in a much more positive light now. The Victorinox Hiker is fairly similar to the knife that you featured, it's just smaller and without fancy scales. Well, I guess almost ALL SAKs look kind of similar! The Hiker is on sale at Amazon right now (9-20-23) for just under $25, so one could buy 5 of them for the cost of the Ranger Wood. I've had a Hiker on my wish list for a while, and after watching your vid I went ahead and bought it today via your Amazon link. I like the Hiker's second, smaller blade, and the Phillips head screwdriver. But I get it, the Hiker is more of an EDC tool, not a Glamp...er...Camping Knife, which IS the point of your video. Also, thanks for the link to the soup! I live in Texas and I have not heard of that recipe, but I like everything in it! The pork was a nice touch! I bet rabbit, squirrel, or turtle would be good in it as well. Or even chicken in a pinch! I guess I'll have to pass on a Ramen Bomb one evening and give it a try! BTW, the music by Cuervo Negro is always good in all of your vids. Apparently he is a mute though, as I have never heard him speak on any of your videos, LOL!

I own this one, also the Huntsman as an EDC, but the Rangerwood 55 is outstanding, might be the best Survival Knife, expect the RangerGrip 55, where you geht the toothpick and tweezers adding to the great tool. Sinze I carry more then one Knife with me, I would say it is okay without the toothpick and the tweezers, for an EDC I would use one who allready got that and put the big Rangerwood knife in my EDC Bagpack.
@insanogeddon
@insanogeddon Год назад
Wrap some 20 or 22 or 24 gauge brass wire about the lower part of the longer Ranger corkscrew and you have emergency trapping/fishing/lashing/repair covered. Ranger series are excellent outdoors with a saw on par with dedicated folding saws with the ranger wood 55 really standing out as a big knife that even non-knife hostile to blades campers/hikers/walkers seem to treat as a picnic knife despite its size and functions. To use the saw on a ferro pick up a stick and hold it along the handle and along the blade side of the saw .. INSTANT LOCK!

I put one on my wishlist for christmas, and missed that it did not have a toothpick or the tweezers. The number one thing i use is the knife blade, the second most is the toothpick. I never use the tweezers and only exist to swap them out to the overly expensive fire steel. It is not perfect, but it works.

LOVE this knife, but ONLY after I took a Dremel to the side with the awl so it had a notch to access the awl without busting a thumbnail every time. The weird thing is that the Wenger version, which I also own, actually had the notch pre-made on theirs.

Actually, there are lots of big, locking Victorinox Swiss Army Knives. Both 111mm and 130mm. Many models. Public perception may be that a Victorinox is a little red knife, but not so. There are plenty of the little red models available, to be sure. The big, heavy Victorinox Hunter Pro line is far from the little red classics! I have had the RangerWood 55 for years, and agree that it is great! Thanks for the review. Cheers from Haifa, Israel.

With hindsight, I personally don't use one hand openers in the outdoors (do at home with wood working and repairs) so didn't need a rangergrip with said feature. 99% of the time a medium Trapper will handle most animal processing along with the main SAK blade. Don't need a hook blade on my Rangergrip. If they do this 55 in a different wood this would have been my preferred Rangergrip (with hindsight). That meal you made isn't well known in the UK so I'll have to make it, that looked good.

This was a fantastic video. Blade looks awesome but I’m never going to use a corkscrew haha

Awesome man, love your work and style. I just rediscovered this tool in my kit and really enjoy it for camp food prep. Paired with a carbon steel Mora Im good to go 👍

What hat are you rocking? American Hat Makers? Love the Western fedora design over standard cowboy hat. The brim is supposed to protect you so why the up turned sides on a cowboy hat. I must have the discontinued or re-branded version of this because it's black and there is a slide button on the side you pull down that moves the liner out of locking position.
