The Perfect Classic Sonic Comic | Sonic Speed Reading 

I really enjoy how Classic Amy's infatuation with Sonic is treated as alot more sweet and wholesome. Don't get me wrong I do like how Modern Amy can be really feisty and confident but I like how Classic is more like a genuine crush that she's embarrassed about, it's very natural.

There's no doubt in my mind that "Sonic Learns to Drive" was inspired by the Dragon Ball Z filler episode where Goku and Piccolo also learn to drive.

I love the implication that the reason the dialogue in the OVA was so bad was because it was written by a 10-12 year old Amy Rose. I laughed so hard at that one panel.

in my opinion nothing sums up Sonic more than: "Sonic the Speed Limit!" "The What now!?"

Every Sonic related media that *isn't* the games seem to end up doing really well.

Man, lemme tell you, I'm a Boost era Sonic fan first and foremost and one that grew up during the Adventure era. But, THIS? This is also my favorite Sonic comic of all time.

Damn, now I want a new sonic heroes style game, but with Amy's team being her, Mighty, and Ray. And possibly including the team of Fang, Bean, and Bark.

Everything about this comic just makes me smile. Bark being recognised as a good guy just caught up in a bad group of friends is FINALLY implemented as said in his past bios instead of him just being generically evil! That and his interactions with Amy are downright adorable. Also I'd die to see your Metal Knuckles drawing.

It’s amazing seeing Sonic’s character back to its original alignment since it’s been pretty damaged since Colors. Good stuff. If only Shadow could get what Knuckles got in this comic too. So many mixed emotions. So many characters back to prominence but it makes you wish other characters got this treatment too.

Also can we appreciate that when Sonic talks to Amy at 5:54 he has a little fang like the adventure games? Its such a nice touch that didn't need to be added but was anyways

I love how this comic makes the classic universe look so alive, bringing old characters like Honey back, the personalities, it's great stuff. I'm all for them dividing classic and modern if it means we get more stuff like this.

I loved that after Heavy King completed his monologue, you can see Metal Sonic take interest in the idea of ruling over the world as a Metal Overlord before Eggman tells him not to get any ideas. It's the little things in this comic.

This book is a masterpiece.

I personally feel that Classic Sonic should’ve been his own timeline rather than a whole universe. Makes more sense. Other than that I’m absolutely sold on this. I am surprised that Sega let Ian Flynn keep Bean and Bark’s characterization from the Archie Comics as mercenaries who get in the way of Sonic and friends considering that they’ve made lots of mandates as to not let the writers change the characters too much. Also even if unlikely, how would you feel if a Sonic Mania sequel were to have characters from SatAM appear!

I absolutely love how the Heavy King is heavily inspired by the SATAM interpretation of Eggman, being a clone of the doctor himself, with all the high intellect and ruthlessness, but none of the naiveness or pettiness of the original Robotnik. If they continue to do these Classic Sonic spin-off comics, I hope that once they introduce the other robot Sonics (Silver and mecha), they all get some sort of unique trait that makes them stand out between the other robot clones. Especially mecha, If he’s as proud and merciless like in his SMBZ version, it could basically be like the 2nd coming of jesus

I love the little non-dialogue interactions with characters we've never seen interact like Bean and Mighty. I lost my shit when Bean's throwing rocks at Mighty's shell

I'm more of a modern fan myself but this comic is honestly one of my favorite sonic things ever. The artwork is so extremely pretty, the story's fun and seeing all the references and old faces pop up just makes me grin like an idiot. I'm super glad Honey's back in some way too, even if she didn't say anything.

I love how expressive Knuckles is shown especially when he is interacting with his rocks.

Seasons of Chaos was obviously the strongest story imo, and Aaron Hammerstrom's art is absolutely amazing for just how masterfully it emulates the Japanese artwork, I honestly wish he was a regular on the comic alongside Tracy and Adam. I also appreciate the humor in the comic and pretty much everyone's characterization, especially Knuckles. Knuckles by and large actually feels like Knuckles again, and not just the but of the joke about how stupid he is of how he is obsessed to a feral degree over the Master Emerald.. The other stories were pretty nice, with probably the driving story being the weakest outside of all of the references in it.

7:26-7:30: I actually love the idea of Eggman having to build his own family. Being the narcissistic ruler of a machine empire, it only seems natural for him to create his own children that are programmed to praise him no matter what. Anyway, this comic really was amazing. The artwork is gorgeous, the stories are well written, and the whole thing is just pure fun. I especially love Amy's characterization in the free comic book story. I also love how you mention that this comic takes the best elements from older Sonic media and refines them in this comic, which is what I loved about Ian Flynn's work on Archie, even if it wasn't perfect.

when the anniversary issue preview came out i made a bet on a discord server that who launched knuckles away wasn’t metal knuckles as you can imagine i lost

I love the colors used for Classic Amy. I also really love how she has a unique hairstyle with the use of an accessory. Classic Amy makes the Modern Amy design look really bland and uninteresting, imo.

This comic has made me seriously want EVERY SINGLE one of these characters to be either playable to be a boss in a brand new all original Classic Sonic game. It could be like a 2D Sonic Heroes! Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles; Amy, Ray, and Mighty: Fang, Bean, and Bark; and Metal Sonic, Tails Doll, and Metal Knuckles. All we are missing is Team Chaotix! It is such a perfect comic.

It's super cool finally seeing you cover this comic, as a fan of the Classic universe myself it really was incredible! (And I knew you was gonna be hyped about Metal Knuckles coming back lmao) Ig the only critique I have is that the classic Chaotix weren't referenced or used in any way, aside from Espio on that arcade cabinet. Makes me wonder if those characters are even canon considering how their modern versions are complete retcons of KC

meanwhile, in the games: "delete every character and put sonic vs eggman in green hill. let's give the project to a bunch of interns and collect the cash when we go gold in 3 weeks"

I would really like to see these versions of the characters again in IDW. Maybe they'll make something like this again around Sonic Origin's release.

Ever since the prevalence of Mighty and Ray, I've been thinking the "Classic" characters should have their own separate stories. I'd also like to have Blaze's world have some good stories on rare occasion, and Sticks' (the Boom world) as well.

IF Mecha Sonic was in this comic I would of put him at the end with Eggman going Chase him Metal! He suddenly remembers Mecha goes to a closet opening with Mecha looking like he's ready to killl anything eyes glowing. Then he just falls over flat as a board with Eggman going "Oh right haven't charged him in a while.... Crap" I think that would of been a great joke and fun Easter egg for fans cause I love Mecha Sonic too.

While Classic Sonic has been kinda milked recently, things like this shows why Classic Sonic can still be extremely good in the right hands and the right setting

To me, Ian Flynn just fits perfectly as the current Sonic writer for IDW publishing. He knows how to write the characters in a way that not just complements their personalities but, like you've said throughout the video, maintains loyal to the source material, and brings back interpretations of themselves from other games. The world building, Original Characters and stories adaptations just feel vivid with him

As someone who grew up with and is a fan of boost Sonic, the 30th special and FCBD comic were absolutely amazing, and having a universe for modern and classic Sonic is a great idea.

Seeing him being so happy about Metal Knuckles is the most wholesome thing

I can’t wait to get my grubby little hands on this comic…it’s like a perfect balance of cozy warm nostalgia, and Saturday morning cartoons. I might of grown up on Modern Sonic, but I love the Classic version of this wonderful cast just as much. This video is absolutely wonderful!

This comic was amazing, i had a big smile reading it all, genuinely laughing at jokes and even getting emotional. I loved all the characters, the art, the places, MAN what a comic! I really wish from the bottom of my heart that Sega gives this kind of love and respect for the games some day.

IDW classic sonic talking makes me feel something, i want more

The 30th Anniversary comic's main story was the first piece of Sonic media in a long, long time that actually felt like Sonic to me. Fun, but not completely lacking in stakes. The characters felt like themselves again, the story felt right tonally, everything just felt right to me. It's not perfect, there were definitely little things here and there that felt a bit off to me, but all in all, this was easily the most fun I've had with a Sonic comic since... well ever, really. This is much more in line with what I want out of Sonic as a series. Not a pure comedy, dramatic epic, serious war story or even a depressing apocalypse scenario. Just a fun adventure story, one that knows when to be funny and when to be serious. It was a good time. Shame it's almost certainly the only time we'll get something like this in an official capacity, but still.

I like how Eggman is sleeping with the Tails doll and nobody's talking about it.

I'd love to see Ian tackle a Knights Journey of Dream adaptation.

Great review! This comic issue is pure joy, a massive celebration of the blue blur. I've never had so much fun reading a comic issue, page after page, reveal after reveal, reference after reference. Read it the morning of the 30th anniversary getting me hyped for the day before the symphony that evening. It's so clear that so much passion and care went into this and I hope this same dedication goes into future Sonic media.

The Amy comic has been the most accurate to how I am feeling about drawing. Its hard for me to share what ive created because i feel no one would care or have barely interest in them.

Personally I kinda hope all the classic characters who don't have modern counterparts stay classic exclusive the way there's modern exclusive characters. Also I love how Heavy king is basically SatAM Robotnik (though I hope they do stuff to make him stand out and not be generic evil for evil's sake like Zavok) and how they revived the old Robotropolis capital building with the old genesis makeover.

This feels like Sonic (Classic) Heroes.

I agree 1000% with this video title. Though it would've been fun to see the Chaotix in there too, they've given the classic universe its own sufficiently developed cast of characters that I feel could easily rival the modern cast. Part of me still wishes they'd just bring in the classic characters into the modern cast so it could all be under one uniform universe, but Sega has a real knack for introducing new characters and not doing anything interesting with them after their debut game which sucks.

I just got this book today from the book fair at my school, and sure am I glad I didn't watch this video before reading the comic myself because I thought the video was gonna be about an old comic book before I knew the 30th year anniversary comic book existed, also now my new Sonic character is Kip the Capybara because Capybaras are pog, that they also added Tails doll, an old character that the internet spaced off as a creepypastas, and also metal knuckles, and brought back the hard boiled gang, Heavy king, and Mighty & Ray from Sonic mania (yes I know Mighty and Ray originated from the arcade Sonic game but they have regain popularity in Sonic mania) and keep in mind that I'm not even into books so the fact that this comic book managed to get me to read it in once sitting even though I had the option to read it or not proves how good it is

Interesting thing to note: What if "Seasons of Chaos" helps to explains why Eggman never revisits old plans? He builds Heavy King to be his servant, only for him to turn on Eggman. In this issue, he rebuilds Heavy King with the same purpose, and the same thing happens. Perhaps Eggman, after reused plans always turned on him/fail over and over, became paranoid and never returned to old plans to avoid the mistake made with Heavy King

I am looking at these comments, and the sonic community is much more educated then any other. I like every video of this guy, even the whole Speed reading of the metal virus!

The comic is awesome but then I remember that Classic Sonic has been divorced from his future and thus true growth and change and Modern from his past and thus his foundation and continuity because marketing, which leaves the comic being bittersweet for me. Metal Knuckles has been confirmed to be a classic only character so we won't be seeing him often. While Amy's role in the story fits in PERFECTLY with her character arc from Adventure. You don't need separate universes to do both types of stories, Sonic has done both types fine before with it all being in one solid continuity, all multiple verses does is harm the franchise. The Adventure era is defined by its strong continuity, grounded in the past, while moving forward with character development and to new adventures, so it needs the Classic era, without it we Adventure fans will never get something of this caliber.

While I found you with your hyper videos. I love your comic book section the most. All of your stuff clearly has a lot of love, and all are very well done, but this is my favorite bit. It reminds me of comicstorain and I can't think of higher praise.

As someone who is more a fan of the adventure type stories and stuff, this is exactly what I'm looking for. A balance between comedy and serious with good personalities to boot. It's very epic

This comic was just amazing from top to bottom and even though I personally grew up on the boost games I love me some classic Sonic, dad wouldn't be happy otherwise, and this was a perfect way to show the glory that he was and still is.
