You do got this. Hopefully your already done. Hardest thing for most of us is over thinking stuff. I barely started this video right after I just built my larger assembly table for a smaller one car garage type area. Where can I put this or this? Specially on first build or first concept idea, just do it! You may make a new one later but you didn’t lose anything bc you gained a ton of knowledge. Heck, I have a rolling bathroom cabinet in my garage now that works for now as a mitre saw table. Minimal extras needed. Just do it. Don’t look back.

@matthewpeech…. THANK YOU! I’m a long time subscriber and this time you’ve designed the PERFECT workbench for my shop. I’ve been wanting something like this for years as my current workbench is an old kitchen island salvaged from a friends remodel project. While it works, I too find it tough to reach across and (for my likes) a bit too tall. However, when I build this I’m only going to use the 2 smaller ones because I rarely work with sheet goods. Thanks again for finding the perfect solution! Love the videos…keep them coming buddy!

I built cabinets in a dewalt loyal shop for years and when I got laid off I bought the Hercules radial arm saw biggest one they had out of desperation. I would pit that and the orbital sander and any other Hercules tool I’ve bought against a dewalt any day at 1/3 the price. The only thing I haven’t been impressed with is the durability of the consumables (sandpaper etc) but the tools themselves are solid.

Edit: CattyWampus Love that confession about editing Southern Slang…. I’m from TN and share your struggles. My Martin heritage in Rowan Co. knew you we hold in’ out on us . I’m 65 and agree with your philosophy of function over looks when it comes to the bench you gotta hammer on. I have a few “work boards” very shallow trays that hold individual projects. I rack those up vertically and use them on top of the plain pine 2 x 12 battle scarred top of bench. It adds organization, and the smaller work trays can be cutoff scraps of oak, cherry, walnut, … whatever ya got. Keep up the great work and don’t worry about accent…. Women in Australia go nuts over men with Southern accents. In a jewelry store , one beautiful lady told me she thought the accents sounded “ distinguished and refined” …. I about fell out laughing. It’s all in the eye of the beholder

Being an elder.... I have had numerous shop configurations. The multiple table strategy is the way to go. I even went further and made my table saw and bandsaw and grinder bench all the same height. Also my primary custom work table is 33" wide .... for exactly the same reason.... that is how far I could comfortably reach. Two items of concern: one is the hinges where you actually have to pick up a table to align the hinge. I think something like eye bolts and a drop pin might be better. A standard door hinge with a drop pin I think would be too difficult to align. An eye bolt gives some flexibility and if you need a tight join, just add a clamp. The second item for me is far more important. I make my benches with an all around four inch lip. This gives one the ability to clamp items to the bench top easily. It also sets back the bottom like a kick plate, so when your working at the bench your ankles and shins are not bumping into the bench. Obviously hinging these benches would need a different design... maybe a swing out tab? Loved the video. For those novices that only have a four foot wide piece of ply screwed to the wall, the back foot full of clutter .... this has to be an eye opener. Thanks for the video.

I threw together a work table a few years ago and I'm seeing all of the things that I didn't think about when I made it. I've been running through my head of all the different ideas. Then, I saw this video. This is what I need. I would add some through drawers right below the top. Drawers that that are connected but pull out from both sides. For me I can see that being very handy. Because of weight, I don't think I would put storage under these except for some shelves. Even if only on 1 side/end. Mostly to hold tools I'm using at the time. Great video and as usual, great build and info. God bless and keep'em comin'.

Matt you asked about other Harbor Freight items that would be useful in woodworking. I’m starting at this late at 69 and I’ve been going across to our sister city in SS Marie, Michigan to the Harbor Freight Store. They have lots of very good quality affordable tools for woodworking. I have purchased the Bauer Steel Horses 1300lb capacity that has slots that accept 2x4’s when you need a flat working area. I was building rails for my Harbor Freight folding trailer and I used the Bauer Adjustable Roller stand to support the 10’ boards that I needed to cut on my Miter saw. I also recommend the Bremen clamps parallel and squeeze clamps. They are reasonably priced and great quality. I used them when I was building my deer stand walls. Lastly I bought a couple of their Apache Waterproof cases to store my Milwaukee cordless Jig Saw and 18 gauge Brad nailer. They work awesome for protecting the expensive tools. They have pull out foam that you can shape the slot for your tool. I also make a depression for a battery as well. All reasonably priced and if you wait till they have there sales you can save big time. I got 30% off on the Apache Case saving $10 off the $39 price. I enjoyed your work table build it was a great idea!

I buy all of my clamps at Harbor Freight. I recently learned that they come with a lifetime replacement warranty with no questions asked. I haven't had to use it for any of them but it's there when I eventually break one. It's been 3-4 years now and even the ones I left out in the rain are still useable (after a little rust removal)

Hi Matthew, I've been watching your channel for some time now. I'm a seasoned woodworker and enjoy every bit of content that you put out. Your project presentations & explanations are up there with the best of 'em~! My wife and I just retired a couple of weeks ago and my shop time is about to go full bore. I've accumulated a long list of things to build over the years and am ready to make up for lost time. I see A LOT of your projects that will be going to front of the line, especially this bench/cart build. So versatile~!! I just want to thank you for your support & contributions to this community~! It's full-timers like you that keep (used to be) part-timers like me interested in keeping the sawdust flying. Always looking forward to your next video~!!

Catawampus, my favorite word. Love this work bench. I’m building a new shop now and was thinking about something like this. I’m actually planning to build carts for my table saw, thickness planer, and jointer that can be moved around the shop as needed and wanted to build a table that could be used as in feed and out feed. This will be perfect. Thank you for a great video.

Catawampus, dude!!! I’ve got a super small space to set things up-6’x6’ and Ive got to make it work for my small table saw, an out feed table, assembly table and storage. I think you just gave me the answer as to how to accomplish everything I need. PS: I like HF-as a newby, I bought some F clamps from a local woodworking store-they were 3x the price and didn’t work as well as the HF f clamps I picked up. HF chisels were cheap but good enough for me to practice with. I In the past, I have gotten all my tarps and discharge hose from there. That saved us a fortune when we were pumping water out of the ditch for irrigation. HF is one of my favorite stores to wander around-oh, and I like their $145 work benches with three drawers and a vise on the side and storage shelf underneath. Thanks again!

Sometimes the more simple the project the more functional it is. That's a great workbench that can easily be moved around, and even transported to different locations since it breaks down into smaller sections, something you probably wouldn't want to do or couldn't do with a much longer workbench. May have to build one of these when I get my shop floor done.

CATAWAMPUS: This is an awesome idea for a table system. I'm super surprised that I have never seen something like this until now. So versatile as a main table, smaller table stations, or connected angled station. Great work! I am going to work on doing something like this very soon. It would be perfect in my garage.

I have been using 4 separate 2' x 4' benches for a good while. So handy for all the adjustability as you mentioned! I never thought of hinging but I don't think I have the space to swing. I like the 3' idea for reachability but again I don't think I can work it into my space. You have inspired the thought of a swing up 1' shelf on 1 or 2 of the 2' x 4' benches. I have a problem with my floor being irregular so I have a supply of shims and wedges to level up as required for each set up. It is sort of a pain but I generally will leave an arrangement of benches set up for a good while. I will also clamp up the benches from the underside either directly or with blocks between to make clearance for the track saw blade. The system works great for my small space. You are my kind of thinker, I will subscribe and look forward to more of your ideas. Thank you for sharing!

Catawampus, this is a great idea for a small shop like mine. I actually acquired an old solid core door from the rehome store to use as my table top. It's heavy, dead flat, comes prestained, and it's cheaper than plywood. I plan to add some runners to the underside of my table to be able to add some tote storage, as storage is at a premium. Thanks for the awesome video Matt!

My catawampus garage is small but after seeing this, I plan on building it in 4 small sections that can be used as a work bench along the walls to keep the floor space open and connected together when I need a large work space. Initially I was planning on building mounted work benches along the walls but this seems far more versatile. Great video!

I've got a super small shop with a lean to to work under. That's where I do my cutting and planning. The problem is the lean to still has a dirt floor. We are remodeling a bathroom now but as soon as it's done I plan to have concrete poured under the lean to. I'm going to build these tables to help with everything you talked about in the video. I'll be able to take down my saw horses and planks I use for a table. Good video Matthew!

Catawampus, what a funny expression. Don't worry about your accent. I'm a sailor, hearing a lot of English accents, and your accent is one of the easy ones to understand/enterpid, so your effeort for simplifying it works. Love your open mind, and "if you wanna do it this way, go for it, if that way, then do so"-attitude. And most of all, I love that you show the error you made, and how to fix it, in stead of hiding it attempting to be a YT guru perfectionist.

Catawampus. Just started woodworking in the last year and use what I had for workbench: 2 aluminum 4' x 2' old food prep tables. They are ok usually but have led to some catawampus times with blades and nails. Your workbench will be wicked pissah (Boston speak for "great") in my shop! Perfect size and utility to keep projects organized. Nice build! Always be proud of your accent and expressions. I have lived in NC for 19 years, after growing up in Massachusetts and I'm told my Boston really comes back after I visit up there. Wicked pissah!

CATAWAMPUS... Also the name of a former pop band in Lexington, Kentucky. A mix of War and Santana, they really rocked. Yup. Ya talkin' to another Kaintuck here. Originally from Danville, I was raised in Florida, but now semi-retired in Brandenburg. Semi... because I recently took up woodworking as a "hobby". It's a natural evolution of my career as a commercial carpenter, where we focused more on metal framing over wood. Love your channel, keep doing what yer doin' here.

I needed a quick build workbench for my catawampus garage workshop. I used the same construction for the legs with and an old solid core door for the worktop. That was back in 1984 and it is still as solid as the day I built it. The top is beat but I cover it with 1/8 inch hardboard and replace as necessary. This was supposed to be a "just for now'" workbench but sometimes good enough turns out to be all you need. I guess you have to try the simple things in life in order to really appreciate the simplicity.

Love the modularity of this workbench. If you mount the flag hinges opposite you could connect them to each other. I could also see mounting a catch on the bottom of the frame so when it's in a wing position it would stay steady, instead of moving. This is awesome!

Catawampus is fun to type and say! About 5 years ago I went on a deep-dive to find the "best" workbench and most of those videos involve hundreds of hours of really fancy dovetails and crazy vises and bells and whistles. I remember looking for something EXACTLY like this. I agree this is the best work bench because it is simple and it works and you can adapt it to your needs. I will be using this design for my next workshop when I move next year this is the first project on the list (after I pour the concrete floors cause I don't think the castors would work in the dirt.) Thank you for sharing all that you do. Your channel is one of the few that feels legitimately like its sole purpose is to help people that want to make projects (and make money selling projects)
