what a cool idea. my environment is much different, but good to know this kind of pot is an option if i ever want to get a plant that i'm intimidated by the watering needs.

Hi Danny! Can you do an update on this setup? I also live in an oven, Phoenix Arizona, and need all the help I can get with moisture/watering during the summer months. I have a few of these amazing pots and have been tempted to play around with inorganic media in them. 😊

Love your channel, It’s enabled me to have a heathy collection of orchids. I even used peroxide & cinnamon ~ it’s crazy it’s working. I have 2 novelty Phalaenopsis orchids that had dead roots & they are actually growing roots & leaves

The hydroponics community use a system like this called flood and drain. I plan on setting up this type of system for houseplants but on a larger scale (several plants together in a tray of leca).

It will be interesting to see how this works out. Also as you mentioned adding fertilizer to the water, instead of the slow release, since its an internal watering system it will eventually have fertilizer in the water...🤔🤔🤔💜

@rampxxxx 2 года назад
I've discover that leca from different brands are like different worlds. One float like wood like 'Lamstedton' (don't absorb water so ...) and others like 'canna' don't float (aprox > 50%) so absorb lots of water.

If you can find MSU fertilizer, that would help. It’s formulated by Michigan State University and it has also micronutrients. You’d also need to use distilled water, rain water or maybe zero-water. The zero-water filter comes with a meter device that can measure the Total Disolved Solids (TDS). The sink water could have too many salts and added fertilizer to it will increase too much the salt contents. Instead of following the instructions, you could measure the solution with the meter and try to keep it around 250. With this you could water the working every other time, alternating with pure water. Please remember to not overwater and instead to allow the orchid to dry slightly before watering again.

Where is your tray from? Also, could I use osmocote as a slow release fertilizer for my orchids?

Hi Danny! weirdly i had the opposite experience to you! Leca for me turned out to be a life saver, my greenhouse is in a garden and I found that bark decomposes and attracts farrr to many bugs, using clay pebbles my bug problem has decreased alot although I still get slugs sometimes (i use nematodes for those), As for drying out I found this to be an issue for very thirsty plants so I use your layering technique with sphagnum moss and i put a tray beneath and it, once i started regularly watering and feeding my catasetums they loved the mix of sphagnum and leca and sent massive blooms for the first time, i now use leca for all orchids baring a few with thin roots which i may use a mix with sphag or maybe small bark if necessary, leca didnt seem to work well for my slipper orchids As for pH i have never checked how would you recommend checking pH and how to reduce it can I just add pH reducer to my watering can as I water? Hope this catt grows and flowers for you!

pH meter is the best way ... can be purchased on Amazon. Strips are a cheaper option but not nearly as accurate. To acidify water you can use Vinegar, Lemon juice, Vitamin C powder or a 'pH-down' product.

Very interesting. I'm struggling with my phal. She bloomed 3 times in one year and went down hill when she got gnats in her bark. I'm trying to save her but we are down to almost nothing. Help

How attached are you to the water being super clear? Aquarium peat pellets (perhaps in a mesh bag to protect the pump) or Catappa/Indian almond leaves would bring the pH and hardness down and would last a while. You’re a fellow fish nerd so I know you’re familiar with the tea-colored water in blackwater tanks. It might be better suited to one of the darker pots that would hide the color of the water. It might not be pretty but it would be effective.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 2 года назад
Hi, I am generally obsessed about clear water and can't stand brown water 😂 but in this setup I don't see it so I don't really care, the Indian almond leaves idea is really good! Let's see if it can stand up to Leca! Thanks for the suggestion, it's a good idea but I'm not sure what we'll do about the biofilm in this reservoir 🤔

Hello Danny, why do you think the pH of the medium could be an issue? I think it could only be if the roots weren't able to grow on LECA properly. In your experience, did you see something similar happen? BTW, since LECA is basically an aluminium silicate with a lot of iron hydroxide in it, it is practically impossible to change its pH. It is however possible, in principle, to control that of the nutrient solution, by using a pH buffer (such as a phosphate or an acetate buffer).

one way u can bring ur ph down is with tanic water using Indian almond leaves or seed pods

Hey Danny - I've been reading about garlic water for watering/feeding orchids and getting rid of pests. Do you have any thoughts or experiences with this?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 2 года назад
Hi, yep I found it to be nonsense, but if you can stand the smell of garlic and have some time to waste, try it out, experiments are fun even if they fail 😊

Hello Dani! How are you? I' m sincerely enjoying your videos, as always! So, I need your assistance: I have mini phalenopsis, which spent all her flowers a couple of months ago, but she keeps her flower sticks all fresh, health and hard, while she has given no flowers ever since they were finished. I've fertilizing her more, but nothing happened. Should I cut the before the buds and see or keep waiting. I' d appreciate your help!
@maple8859
@maple8859 2 года назад
Sometimes side branches start from an older flower spike. But they are not always as rich in blooms as a fresh flower spike. Most recommend to cut the stem all the way down, just above a node. After a new leaf or two grow, a new flower spike should emerge from underneath one of the older leaves, probably the next one after the previous spike. Once two leaves are grown, you could stop fertilizing, water a little less and make sure the orchid is close to a window where it can feel a change in temperature at night. A lower temperature at night will give it the signal to push a flower spike. If you can keep it outside, away from direct sun, it will help. Good luck!

I cut the dead off of my spike and left the rest. I got a beautiful kiki out of it. I try and leave mine as long as the mother is looking good. It takes a lot of energy to throw up a spike so leave them and see what it does.

Hello, I love all your videos! Please help, I have received a sick orchid 7 months ago with hardly any roots. She started growing a keiki from the crown, rePotme said months ago it was terminal spike but said the think it’s a keiki, I emailed them today and they said it is a keiki, but how weird it is growing in the crown. I hope I can save the keiki, the Motjwr is not doing so well!😢Not sure how to remove one from the crown. Please any advice on how to save Mother and baby would be much appreciated!!!’♥️

Hi, thanks for supporting me! I am not sure what happened, it's a RU-vid system and I cannot controll it. Maybe try contacting them? I have no idea how they operate the feature 🤔

You remember your springtail video well I have 2 questions well a question and a comment lol I think if you watch RU-vid how to catch springtail by Bradx_ you forgot the yeast to help feed them. The question please look up rare insect invades Waterford home it’s on RU-vid…these aren’t the same things we have in our orchids? Right? Because I have what you have what bradx_ on RU-vid catches but are these the same as the home invader?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 2 года назад
Hi 1. Nope didn't forget anything, no need for yeast 2. Springtails can be found in all soils, pots and even in orchid potting mixes and are beneficial insects 😊
