This begins the start of a new series where I take from what in my opinion is some of the absolute best from an artists' catalog & make an album out of it. J. Cole is first on the list as he's got one of my favorite voices in hip hop.
The PERFECT J. Cole Album
1. A Tale of 2 Citiez
2. Fire Squad
3. Mo Money
4. ATM
5. Brackets
6. GOMD
7. Neighbors
8. Boblo Boat
9. Once An Addict
10. 4 Your Eyez Only
11. Jermaines Interlude
12. Sacrifices
I feel these are all great tracks & build into what I personally would consider the perfect J Cole Album.
Thanks for watching & have a great day!

Nas shouldve just been quiet, I think it would've been much better for J cole as a person to have more hits, it wouldve increased his popularity and the songs about real issues wouldve been heard by more people, and maybe j cole could've mixed the social issues songs with the hit songs and had a way different and more successful career, as we had seen from the "middle child" song and the KOD album which had doubled his streams on Spotify.

I disagree on the take on "Let Nas Down" J Cole came up with Nas as his idol and even despite the fact that it seemed as though J Cole was humbling himself to a great degree it shows that J Cole cares about his artistry. No matter how big you are I think hearing that your idol doesn't like a song you made would make you feel a way, and J Cole does say that he at first felt bitter about it in the song which I think shows that the song as whole isn't just a meek Cole with no confidence Also I think if you say that it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things then what's the difference between a Drake and J Cole? If at the end of the day it matters only that a rapper be successful then the artistry of the Coles, Kendricks and Pusha Ts means nothing in the face of Drakes sheerly overwhelming commerical success.

Sean Langi Pusha T has two classics in his discography. Hell Hath No Fury as Clipse and Daytona. Drake doesn’t have a classic album. Not because his music is bad. At least not all of it, but because a lot of his songs sound the same. He wants the radio hits and streaming numbers. He doesn’t care about critical acclaim.

Personally I love tracks from Cole like "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Intro (2014 FHD)" and the first few minutes of "Note To Self" because of the somber mood that Cole can put together when he's not really focusing on spitting bars or saying a story. I'd say that I appreciate these "throwaway" mood songs really as much as his more popular songs. Also some might say that Born Sinner is his worst album but for the same kind of reason I described above I really feel songs from Born Sinner like "Sparks Will Fly" or "Born Sinner", simply because as much as you correctly pointed out that Cole has a massive potential to drop a 10/10 classic rap album, I feel like he has an equal potential to drop a nice dancehall or r'n'b album. I get that it might not be everyone's flavor but by listening to Cole's music for some time I really developed a spot in my heart for cuts just like these. Hell even "Power Trip" is kind of a nice track if you stop treating it as a song that has to be deep and inspiring, because it's from J. Cole (I love Miguel's voice on this song and I kinda wish Cole did more songs with him and other singers in general).

I agree. Especially that last part about people putting some of his songs and lyrics on a pedestal because it's him. Dont get me wrong, all of those things are what make him one of the greats of the generation, but people judge his music wayyyy too hard because of his name when they should really just sit back and enjoy them for what they're worth. Not every song has to be jam packed with bars and flow changes and hard beats. That's one of the things I feel is wrong with shawn's "perfect" album. He calls songs like wet dreamz and no role modelz "fillers" while I think it just takes the edge off the project and lightens it up a bit. Just my humble opinion lol.

Nah it's not a contradiction. Work out (the song that let nas down) came out a few years before Wet Dreams ect and it helped raise Cole to fame. Plus the song wasn't trying to be lyrical so to judge it on lyrics would be strange. The song does its job well, it's a very catchy song. Meanwhile he was bigger by the time Wet Dreams, Photograph ect was released and those songs were meant to make a point and therefore more open to having their message critiqued

Jermaine's Interlude used the beat from 'Can't Call It' on Spillage Village's 'Bears Like this too' project. It was mainly an EarthGang track with J.I.D, Bas as featured verses and Cole on the chorus. He probably had the verse pre-recorded for 'Can't Call It' and then got offered a bag for what ever throwaways he had on his harddrive since he never releases loose tracks anyway.

To me this is Logic, but I do think he has perfect albums in Under Pressure and The Incredible True Story. I really want Logic to be a great, because he can be. He’s got the crazy flow, and he can bring some insane lyricism, but he just hasn’t. It sucks to see an artist you love just declining and declining rapidly. Because he can be one of the best, but he just hasn’t been. He’s definitely doing something more with this next album, taking a lot more time, and apparently bringing it back to the roots. He says it’s bars on bars on bars, and more like his first 2 albums. And I seriously want this to be true, but it’s really hard to believe him with his recent work. I do have more faith in this next project than anything he has released in the last 3 years, but I will have to wait. I think Confessions of a Dangerous mind, the song, is great, and it got me hyped for the album, but boy was I wrong. At the end of the day I still appreciate the man behind the music, but I can’t call Logic one of the best right now. Even though I know he can be.

It’d add an extra layer to it imo as it shows how he wants to leave the hood, and change, but ultimately hasn’t yet (at the time of sideline story) due to still being immature. I feel like if that songs in there at the beginning it makes his eventual realisation that he hasn’t changed any hood problems, or really helped his mother with her anxiety/depression, and has instead just removed himself from the equation

i understand why you would criticize “let nas down” in relation to the rest of cole’s discography. but i think you’re being a little too hard on him for that song. keep in mind that this is 2013 cole, still coming off the success of friday night lights and work out and stuff. i think it’s perfectly reasonable for an up and coming rapper whose music has just started blowing up suddenly gets slammed by his idol. if anything, it might be an even better testament to his character. 2013 cole was still kinda raw - still developing as a rapper and honestly, Born Sinner, while not being a great record overall, really was the beginning of the cole we’re seeing now. current j cole has the influence, money, and experience to rap more retrospectively and give young rappers advice about starting and maintaining a career, but 2013 j cole was just looking to be a better rapper. i think, if you look at it that way, Let Nas Down makes a lot more sense for the time that it was released.

I’m diggin this album fr ‼️ some of my favorite J Cole songs are on here. It’s the “perfect album” in a sense of a story and expressing himself as a person more so than a compilation of his best songs. You have legit reasons for each song and why u chose each one. However, I personally disagree with your some of the commentary about Wet Dreamz, Photograph and Let Nas Down not to invalidate them or anything like that but just that these songs or more than “listenable” in my opinion. I think Photograph and all the other songs I mentioned have solid, legit narratives that you may be overlooking. theres a noticeable change during verse 2 of let nas down that shifts the conversation from nas’ disappointment in him, to how he took the criticism and not only changed his music, but tried to influence the rap game as a whole. that’s why i believe let nas down is more important than you make it out to be. Also, Wet Dreamz was placed near 03’ adolescence to help you visualize his childhood, the good (wet dreamz) and the bad (03’ adolescence). Then, that theme of duality is shifted into the next track (a tale of two citiez). No Role Modelz is a little out of place I agree, but when you think about the energy coming from GOMD, he then pulls a will smith “why doesnt he want me” in no role modelz. the struggle of finding a girl that isnt like a fake reality tv star shown in that song is emphasized by Hello, where he expresses that he already has found that girl, but her life passed him by. but i do agree, photograph was pretty random, it only connected with the theme that not only substances can be a drug. Im a Cole stan in case you couldnt tell. I hope this made sense lmao

Still wild that an interlude ended up being the best “song” on an album

I understand what Shawn is trying to say about Cole going off topic on his albums but I’m not always trying to listen to his songs for the storyline. I listen to them because they sound good

Amazing list though. 1. Get free 2. Can I holla at you 3. Runaway 4. Rise above (could be like his runaway track except it’s from his wife’s perspective and she was feeling) 5. Welcome (After going through problems with his wife, dad in can i holla a ya and everything he notices going on around him in get free he starts to reflect on his life when he was younger then at the end of the track he kind of brings himself back to reality) 6. Things change (Ft Omen) (Just talking about the change he’s going through as he references back to younger him and his girl multiple times in his verse) 8. Folders crystals ( Again just him reflecting on life then starts to shift his anger since he’s already upset with prior things but this time at the rap game) 9. False prophets (Him continuing to go at the rap game but also some kind of self reflecting as he could be talking about himself partially “crying out for help while the worlds egging him on” Then maybe instead of him talking about wale he’s talking about himself. Then at the end comes to a realization he’s projecting, “from now on my hair grow out i no longer care about opinions) 10. Knock the hustle 11. Family and loyalty (His verse only) 12. Want you to fly (outro)

Wet dreams and no role models is garbage. Half the other songs are only okay, and only a few are actually great. Thats a 6/10 record. Not perfect at all

Those GMV Guys Have u ever watched the Fresh Prince. That’s what makes No Role Models great. And the amount of people he connects with on Wet Dreams makes that song great

Tbh I feel like J. Coles feature on Logics AfricAryaN would’ve been a greaty ending. He literally discusses the entire story Shawn was trying to put together in that verse.
