UPDATE
Hi, everyone!
It's been almost 4 years since I made this video and there would be lots of things that I would update or add to this video. When I made this, I was a library director for about one year. The landscape of librarianship has changed some since I filmed this, and I've become better acquainted with my position as a director.
I would like to do an update to this one day, but I'd like to address something that's come up in the comments section (something I would also like to add to my update video). I've had several comments shaming me for calling myself a librarian when I do not currently hold an MLIS. These sort of elitist comments are not welcome in this space.
While I am not a degreed librarian, I ran a rural library in its entirety. I handled grant writing, day-to-day operations, collection acquisition, programming, budgeting, planning and more. I find this kind of nit-picking in the industry to be more harmful than helpful. While I think it's important to make some nuances between librarians that are trained in reference and other specialized areas, much of my work was the exact same as my degreed counterparts.
So, yes you CAN be a librarian without a masters degree.
I wanted to make this video so those that were interested in the career but maybe weren't sure about pursuing a MLIS would have the ability to know there are paths they can choose before deciding the shell out $15 - $30K for a Master's degree. (I now feel comfortable pursuing a Master's because I've gotten to experience the job first!)
Happy reading!

I have the same background. I worked in a library during my Literature degree. I Also worked in a bookshop for about a year and I didn't like it as much as working in a library. I will begin my master in Archival and Library Information studies. I can't wait to be working in a library again! :)

This video is fascinating! I've never worked at a library, though I have spent a lot of time in them ;) so I loved getting a peek behind the curtain! I've always been bummed by the master requirement, though it is definitely a goal of mine someday. I had no idea there might be special requirements for rural areas- yay for living in the country! So fun that you get to spend part of your day recommending books. Your passion for your job is contagious :) yay for libraries!

Thank you so much! Yes, it is the BEST job on the planet. I was so happy when I found ways to get into the career track I wanted without having to have my masters right away. It's definitely on my radar and something I want to accomplish in the near future!

I'm glad this video helped! There is so much nuance to the level and kinds of jobs you can have working at a library -- something I didn't realize until I was hired to work at one. It's an incredible career path!

I feel you on that one. I use to work at Guitar Center in the drum department. People use to say "oh you get to sit around and play drums all day or play with all the other instruments", well no, not exactly, there's work to be done, there are sales to be made.

so funny, I manage a movie theater and am looking to go into libraries and i see a lot of similarities. People absolutely 900000% assume we as employees personally screen every single movie before we play it and know everything about it and its cast which makes no sense since there are obviously multiple new movies every single week :"D Who has the time. Thanks for making this video, it was really helpful. even if i am 3 years late

What an interesting video! I love the idea of working in a library- libraries offer SO much and do so much for the community. You're doing such important work. I'm in the process of becoming a therapist, which I'll love, but part of me feels that if after many decades, if I wanted a career change, becoming a librarian would be that second career. Do you find that watching Booktube helps you to choose the new books to buy for the library or recommending patrons those books?
@MKRM17
@MKRM17 6 лет назад
Absolutely! I'm always looking for ways to immerse myself in conversations that are book-related, so Booktube is a great tool. I'm also working on ramping up more teen programming so I would like to show them another side of a website they frequently use that's fun but also related to literacy topics. Sounds like you are doing important work, too! Thanks for watching. :)

This might be a really dumb question. I like the idea of working in a library, but I don’t care much for reading. Other than the rainbow fish and the hungry hungry caterpillar I’ve honestly read one book. On the plus side I suppose that makes me extremely unbiased, on the downside asking for book recommendations from me would be like asking your cat for driving advice. P.s. I just like the atmosphere of a library and how organised and civil it is. Spent most of my childhood using computers at a library and it always felt like a safe space.

Yeah same with me. I don't like reading, but the idea of working in a library is a dream.

I don't think you have to be in love with reading to be a librarian! Another aspect of my job that I love is doing deep dives and researching information for patrons. There are so many facets to being a librarian. If you are handling a collection of titles, however, having an interest in the area is helpful.

Hi there! I really enjoyed watching your video. For the longest now (after undergrad) I have been having a hard time deciding my career path. Every time I write out a list of potential career interests being a librarian cames up but I doubted myself because I have no educational background or experience. I have always enjoyed going to the library growing up. I like to discover new libraries and utilize their many services. I am in love with libraries because of all the knowledge, resources, and activities being shared to our communities. It's a safe haven for me. My question is, can a person with no actual experience (education or work) pursue being a librarian? Also, I have applied for a Library Page position in my area to get the opportunity to gain experience. I am required to take a written exam before an interview. Do you have any recommendations on what to study on?

Thanks for the details , very informative . We have some great universities in my country with dedicated mathematics libraries , to work in these is really appealing to me , i am considering to get a master degree in information and librarian Science which make sense because i already have undergraduate degree in mathmatics and iam considering some advance degrees in math once i will be able to work in one of these incredible libraries , it will be like a dream come true to me working as a librarian (a field which i discover recently that i am in love with) not to mention when i may have the opertunity to combine it with with my favourite academic field . So to sum up ; to achieve the above mentioned aims : 1. Should i finish the librarian certification? 2. Working in this area will improve my knowledge and motivation to enter some higher mathmatics degrees in the future ? I will be greatful if you know something about these specific libraries and advise to me if i am in the right direction , or just dreaming : )

I know you mentioned that you didn’t need the masters for the library director position, I’m just curious if that extended the the librarian positions as well- or if those positions required an MSLIS? I live in NYS and I had decided to get my MSLIS because the research I did and librarians from my hometown confirmed that’s what I needed (100% don’t believe the masters is necessary, but that’s a whole separate issue)
@MKRM17
@MKRM17 5 лет назад
It would depend on the size library you want to work at since educational requirements correlate with the number of people the library is chartered to serve.. The current breakdown is for NYS libraries is: 2,500 - 4,999 people (2-year degree), 5,000 - 7,499 (Bachelor's degree), 7,500+ (MLS and NYS public librarian's professional certificate). I would guess that you are talking with librarians at a larger municipal library where there are multiple MLS positions. There is a lot of good discussion to be had about the way MLS degrees are structured, and when it should be a necessity, especially since there are no (accredited) library science degrees at the Bachelor's level in the US.
@kat9240
@kat9240 5 лет назад
KatieBiblio I work as a librarian in nyc now so my masters worked out for my area. I used to live in Jefferson county and those librarians also had masters. Could you possibly link me to a source for the breakdown? I think that Canada has a similar system for the librarians but I haven’t heard of librarians in the US not needing a masters and it’s really a great source of information for those who want to work in a library but don’t have the resources to get a masters
@MKRM17

Katrina you can find it in the NYLA Handbook for Trustees. They just came out with the 2018. I know Jefferson County well. 😊
