In this day and age of Narcissism...this is so deeply intertwind in identities.

Lol. The two tropes first mentioned-“follow your heart” and “you can be whatever you want to be” are two of the most pernicious little sayings we tend to use without even thinking about them. After I became reformed, I began to understand who I really am (i.e., what man really is) more and more and those thoughts changed dramatically. I now tell my kids “you can be whatever God gifted you to be.” And when my daughter came home from her aunt’s house with a beautiful little wall decoration she had painted that said “follow your heart” on it, I told her it was absolutely beautiful, but the “heart is deceitful above all else and desperately wicked” and she may want to change the phrase on her beautiful artwork. 😅

Wish there was a "love" button instead of just a "like"! We need more spiritually grounded women like you to tear down the lies of feminism and false purpose! God bless you, Sister!

I gave up on disney's crap about 20 years ago after realizing every "hero" became heroic by disobeying their parent. It simply wasn't something I wanted my children to learn. 😒

Almost every Disney movie has the same plot. Child has desires. Fearful (wise) parents say no. Child disobeys, experiences a little trouble, but ultimately overcomes, helping g the dumb parents undersrand that they were wrong and that their hero Child was right for disobeying and following their heart.

Two years ago, I read Nancy Pearcey's LOVE THY BODY and she offers a wonderful in-depth look at this dualism. The essential self, or person, is on the top floor and the physical body, or human, is on the bottom floor. This split has been adopted into many Christian's worldview even though they dont use terms like "sacred/self split" or "two-story dualism." That's what makes identifying Disney movies as harmful usually gets you a response like "I grew up watching them and I turned out all right." There's a lack of critical thinking. Loved Nancy's book. Loved YOU WHO. Hoping more Christians start thinking about the ways in which worldly philosophers have influenced their own worldview.

In some cases, and depending on who said it, follow your heart and you choose who you want to be is ok. Like when my mom said it when she was helping me deal with bullies as a kid. Or when she was advising me on a career/school/job path. We do have to be careful and judge these slogans in the context as well.

I was literally just telling my husband how I hate how Disney movies teach little girls to follow their heart and disobey their parents. The sad truth is in the movies the heroine is always trying to save others and if women were following their hearts and disobeying their parents to become doctors or something of actual value, I might (might) let it slide but that is NEVER the case. Women always follow their heart and disobey their parents to be with some guy who is bad news!

Sophists were the Greek philosophers who created the idea and philosophy of: 'that's you truth,' and the idea that you create your own morals. They were paid to entertain folks with fancy worded arguments about life. Their creator of this branch of philosophy was Protagoras, where we get the word, 'protagonist' from. The philosophy and the titled position of being a sophist is where we get our word, 'sophisticated' from.

Dostoyevsky and Kierkegaard were great Christians too, they offered Christ as a solution to existential dilemmas. Sartre was really confused (he approved of communism and dictatorship), and he should not be equated with great thinkers as these two. The rest is plan and simple.

This is the root difference between self-centered and God centered.

When I read the Bible I realized Disney was super pagan the first domino for me was the portrayal of love. I can't believe I couldn't tell the difference between lust and love before I read the Bible because it seems obvious now.

But the Gospel Coalition says all Disney movies point to Christ...or something like that.

A valuable assessment I'm not sure I've heard in these words before. I wonder if this also is where the propensity to re-interpret our actions as the things we wish them to be comes from. I see this in a particular type of person, they wish to be loving so they interpret their actions as loving, with no testing allowed to see if they actually are (either through choosing ignorance or justifying themselves through other people). These types often live an entirely delusional life where the reality they suppose themselves to be in exists with next to no possibility for self criticism. It is a life re-enforced through the well meaning, people pleasing, and goodwill of others that assumes their right intention. In such people I also often find a silent pact to never engage or tolerate self criticism, its the weak link they must choose to be blind to. I find these people often don't feel remorse or guilt since they are so used to re-interpreting their actions as good and are very difficult to correct; often they use "sorry", sometimes emotionally delivered, as a tool to get relationships functioning again, with zero remorse or knowledge of wrongdoing. The problem for such people is that someone outside themselves is upset or that their relationship with so and so is no longer operating, rather than that they have committed a wrong. These types give themselves a pass on hypocrisy and then re-invent their hypocritical actions to match the desirable image of themselves they wish their actions to fulfill or justify - they would never see it as hypocrisy. These sorts of people are innately abusive and are utterly blind to their actions as such since they either appeal to their not knowing better (being raised that way) or to their ignorance, instead seeing their abuse as normal and, therefore, others interactions with it as the site of all problems. One's offense at their abuse is their own fault since the abuser is acting 'normal', is immune to self criticism, and sees their actions as virtuous and therefore there must be some deep rooted problem with the offended or hurt party. Gaslighting is also a frequent occurrence in such relationships. Somehow this all seems to be lurking around in the topic of this video - the idea of an relativistic created self free from criticism - and will make for some interesting examination!

Conversely, neither is essentialism, which is what this video is promoting, a particularly biblical worldview. Essentialism (i.e. platonic idealism) is a Greco-Roman philosophical disposition, not necessarily a Judeo-Christian idea present in the scriptures. While the ideal forms metaphysic is helpful and fairly aligned with biblical reasoning, there is no definitive prohibition against existentialism as a viable backdrop for a robust Christian metaphysic. Lest we forget, ultimately, both existence and essence flow from God our Creator in Whom both Essence and Existence subsist equally and eternally.

You did a great presentation, tho I would argue that the kierkegaardian Existentialism is actually a biblical perspective on existence/selfhood. Just this summer, out of personal curiosity, I've read some great works from Sartre, Camus, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, to inform myself on this subject. And, after reading and understanding Kierkegaard's idea of man being in despair (which he explicitly calls sin, that is, people are sinners before God) and his idea of man being defined by the biblical Creator God, I concluded that he basically just reiterated biblical truth, using different words. (of course many of his arguments are flawed because of his fallacies as a human being). So that being said, I would argue that Existentialism is biblical (and quite interesting as well!).

"No one will be able to separated US from the love of God." The "US" are Christians, the people of God, the Body of Christ, the Church. Even existentialism, with its focus on the "Self," has folks interpret this passage in an individualistic way.

"The basic principle of existentialism is that existence precedes essence for human beings. Essence precedes existence for objects. Objects always have a definite purpose and this purpose is known prior to the creation of the object. On the other hand, humans are not born with a definite purpose." This last sentence is why Existentialism is not Christian. God created humans for His glory; that is a definite purpose. "We are the sum of our decisions and conscious choices." This end statement of existentialism is false because there are many outside influences that affect who we are. We didn't decide who are parents are, where we were born, if something horrible happened to us when we were young, and the list goes on.

So the independent fundamental baptists were right all along, just never put it so succinctly and intellectually.

This probably only represents Sartre, because Martin Heidegger, another existentialist, who taught Sartre, believed the opposite, essence precedes existence; simply read, Being and Time. Trying to reduce existentialism to try to create a narrative to promote christianity is bad criticism. Makes us christians look bad.

I know this video is very well intentioned but it absolutely reeks of someone who has little to no experience with the source material they are critiquing. Existentialism was a response (and a needed one) to the grand philosophical systems of the continental philosophy of its time. Kierkegaard wrote his philosophical works largely under veiled pseudonyms and his devotional work as himself. He deigned to call himself a Christian because he knew too many took this name lightly. He literally was obeying the third commandment. Is he perfect, of course not, but he was definitely against the grain of culture and the European cultural Christianity of his time. If more Christians took time to read Fear and Trembling and his work on confession instead of bowing at the name of the institutes we’d be better off.

I exist because my father fertilized my mother's egg. No magic man in the sky was necessary for this to happen. Moreover, subjective identity is derived from personal memories. The moment I can't remember anything is the moment I forget who I am. Objective identity is derived from both other people's memories and documents like your birth certificate. I mention this only because if I loose my memories, but objective material is still intact, I can still regain my identity. If everyone I've ever known dies and all documents that prove my existence burn in some fire, I can still maintain my identity if I continue to remember who I am. This is pretty basic stuff. I feel that Rachel is trying to mangle common sense to fit her religion.
