But I can say Floridi's work has completely changed my view about it and made me much more aware about what I was in. Sadly not many of my peers took the time to read and think about it but I have tried. Nice podcast!
Information is undoubtedly one of the most captivating facets of philosophy, and I am eagerly looking forward to enjoying this podcast with Dr. Floridi. I'm not even sure how to define 'information' in the broadest sense.
How do you define intelligence without reference to agency? What is the 'extra bit' that intelligence offers over agency? How do you construct an intelligence hierarchy among entities except by looking at their differential agency?
@59:00 if he wants metaphor, there is a decent one for "mind". If you ditch the primitive childish philosophies of mind vs brain, and go for a threefold or fourfold order, soul-mind-brain-spacetime then things are clearer. Mind is (metaphorically) an "emanation" of the soul (not physcial emanation), experiences of the mind are felt by the thing, the subject, the soul (who knows what that is, but for me it does not have to be physical). Spacetime and the physical laws are obviously a sort of intermediate faculty we exploit, but mind interacts with both brain/body and soul through such intermediation. The soul cannot will the mind to force the body/brain to perform physical miracles (within statistical quantum probabilistic reason!). The metaphor for all this, or one useful one, is the light and the lamp, and the thing being illuminated. Lamp ~ soul. Light ~ mind. Illumination ~ brain/body. And as far as brain is conflated with hormones and other bodily matter that's all the "extended mind" you need. It is extended brain, not extended mind. Mind, because it involves subjective qualia experienced by the soul, is obviously (imho) not all physical. But neither is it a monad, or if it is, it's composite. But try convincing a typical modern philosopher? You'll not succeed.
You'd need to provide a metric that can measure human "sentience". Whatever you create, as long as it's objective and concrete goodluck diffretiating AI from humans. Generrally the idea of sentience is vague and people dont understand it when they say it
