Absolutely fantastic interview! Williamson's such a legend, and I've come to be convinced that he's absolutely right about philosophy being not exceptional and a kind of science. Very sensible, so much wisdom.
"If we start thinking of wisdom as being something like a guru, um, telling us what to do through weird metaphors or something like that I don't think that's really what philosophy has been about for most of its history." -Timothy Williamson 🤣🤣🤣🤣 💀
An episode on modality? Yeah, I already have one recorded with Dean Zimmerman. It'll be up on Patreon in the next couple of days and released on here in a few weeks
📕📕📕 You ask nearly every guest (of what I've seen, so far) "What is philosophy?" Not sure if you're interested in viewer definitions, but here's mine: Philosophy: A process and medium through which to generate, support, share, and argue ideas. My thinking is that this definition covers all historical contexts and schools of philosophy all the way up to the present via leveraging a uniting factor- ideas. It also points out something I have yet to hear someone bring up: philosophy as a process. And touches on something I hear people talk a lot about: philosophy as a THING. (that's the medium part) If this gets seen I hope it was at least a pleasant addition to your day.
Oh. I forgot to add that I think the definition's simplicity and accessibility provide value to those with little, or any, contact with philosophical concepts. A bit like how the concept of a cell is taught. A general type of cell description is provided, then the deeper you go into biology and physiology, for example, the more details you learn and the more complex of a definition you can give. But not everyone needs that specific of a definition, and it can turn away people that may have otherwise been interested.
Further: it leaves room for the application of philosophy in any field. To me, this means that philosophy practitioners can be useful regardless of where they are or what they are doing. Sorry, sitting here thinking about all of this and able to articulate more elements of my thought process as I write it out (I haven't shared this definition in any medium, before so it's still rough).
