The philosophy of Gruul is one based on the impulses and instincts which guide us. It is a set of colors on the color pie who are confident in who they are because they head the call of the primal forces. In Magic: the gathering we rarely get to see any other side of red green than the destructive one, but there is beauty in the color philosophy of the mtg colors. In the definitive duality series we will take the time to understand the core of its beliefs.

Do you think Gruul has the right idea, when it comes to how we should live our life, or is it missing the point entirely?

As a Gruul-aligned person myself, I don't think Gruul has the right idea, I feel it! To dance, to love, to tell stories, to revel in this terrible and wonderful life that was gifted to me is what I was made to do and all I ever want
@Arohan71

I don't believe Gruul has it right at all. At best I see them as misguided. At worst they're actively ignoring reality and their belief that they are born with all the knowledge they need makes them dangerous and easily misled. For if this idea is true how can one accumulate knew knowledge? New ideas? And what happens when someone makes a discovery but the others fail to heed it because it falls outside of tradition or what came before. How many suffer when instinct and emotion don't align with what is in front of our eyes? In a world that values only strength and physical power what place is there for the weak, the sick, or the disabled? In a world that values impulse so highly what happens when those who's impulses are most violent are allowed to run unchecked in the name of freedom?
@graysonsnow2832
@graysonsnow2832 10 месяцев назад
@@Arohan71 That's a good point, but I guess it's not as scary as it might seem. The Green is changing, just slowly. Red pushes Green forward a little faster. In turn, Green brings peace and tranquility to Red. The sick and the weak will be cared for by the love and compassion of Red, as well as the desire to protect and the deep sense of unity of Green. The Gruul are not dumb, even though they are not academic scientists, but they have wisdom and knowledge that they accumulate through the experience of many generations and observation of the world around them. As well as understanding the inner self. It is in our world that the manifestation of strong emotions can be problematic, because no one really taught us how to deal with them. And manifestations of impulsivity are most often negative, and can result in violence and cruelty. This is no longer just a desire to follow your feelings and emotions, this is a boiling point, after which a person explodes, uncontrollably burning himself and everything around. After that, he is branded a criminal and removed from sight, setting an example of what happens if impulsiveness and emotionality are allowed. But this is already an unhealthy manifestation of emotions, because sometimes no one knows what to do with their emotions. A Healthy Red and Green Society is a beautiful society. The sick and the weak will be cared for because they are loved, and not because it "should be" according to some law, code, or divine right. The sick and the weak will want to live, to become stronger, to be healed because they are loved.

@@Arohan71In defense of Gruul, The Gruul philosophy works best for an individual or small group and less for larger nations and such. Gruul is not so much about not obtaining new knowledge as much as it is trusting your gut instinct over knowledge and thinking. Some problems don't have the luxury of taking time to think. Some Problems require an act first question later approach! For Gruul societies that have sick or infirmed, I would imagine that those afflicted with just roll with the punches. Put a little dirt on it as they say. For those who are allowing their impulses and instincts to take over and caused too much havoc for the Gruul, well a good knock on the head from the Big Boss will calm them down. I do agree a world full of Gruul will have it's problems but To be fair, any "world" that is exclusive to a color philosophy doesn't have it all quite right and will have their problems as well. Each have their pros and cons and each still have their place in the universe. I take it you play blue or white btw?
@c.d.dailey8013
@c.d.dailey8013 10 месяцев назад
This is totally not my style. I am mainly a blue person. Gruul is the exact opposite of that. The video even talked about that contrast. Once I get into color combos, I start to like the colors better. I like the nature of green and the freedom of red. Maybe these two can combine to form some aspect of Gruul. Maybe that is the kind that hates being imprisoned by the city. One of the most relatable three color combos for me is Temur. That is essentially Gruul with the opposite color of blue added in. This forms a personality that resembles a shaman. One is comfortable in the wilderness. Yet they also have a deep wisdom about it. It takes a ton of knowledge and training to be a shaman. The Celtic version of a shaman is the druid, and that takes many years to train for. I suppose the one major thing that Temur lacks is that it doesn't get caught up with the duality of more modern religion. It lacks the collectivism of white and the individualism of black. There is just a neutral adherence to nature and knowledge. That is so refreshing in a way. If one put Temur in a DND alignment chart, it would likely go in true neutral or chaotic neutral. I do admire shamans because they are the first magicians. They are really the foundation for the other kinds. That can fit the three colors together. Green has the tradition to form a base. Red and blue together form creativity, which can develop off the base. I do like to imagine things in a fantasy world. One kind of occupation I did imagine is that of an adventurer. They are the ones that go into the wilderness and do exciting stuff. This kind of character would fit in Temur. There is a huge emphasis on nature and the environment, so that makes green. The adventurer has a lot of freedom and action. They like getting into fights. That is like red. The adventurers also have a lot of intelligence. They have a knowledge of battle strategy, geography, resource locations etc. They can handle the complexity of the world. That is like blue. The adventurer is a bit of a mercenary. They are willing to do anything for anybody, as long as they get a decent reward. That ties into the neutral nature of Temur. Then I thought of an offshoot of the adventurer. That is wild people. It is like Temur but drop the intelligence of blue. These kind of people live in the wilderness. They live in nature and they are free. They live like wild animals, and they can even shapeshift to animals. Wild people can form romantic bonds with humans living on the outskirts of settlements. They are very loving and affectionate. There is also a primal desire for a romantic partner. The wild people are pretty fun to imagine. They fit the red and green of Gruul perfectly. That is pretty cool. Wild is a good word to describe the color pair. It usually means something that is energetic and hard to control. That is red. Sometimes it is used to describe animals and environments to mean something in nature. That is green. All MTG color pairs have multiple manifestations across many different planes. The ones that most closely resemble my idea of wild people would be the werewolves of Innistrad and sayters of Theros. They really get into the human and animal mix thing. Werewolves are a bit closer due to the shapeshifting. Werewolves are even my favorite horror monster. Turning into a wolf would be cool if it didn't have a bad reputation. Now that I think of it, Innistad does tone down the creepy aspect by not making werewolves black. That is refreshing in a way. That plane is full of horror monsters. Vampires are Rakdos, and zombies are Dimir. Those are the two black monsters. One thing both have in common is that they are dead bodies that have become undead. That does make them fit really close to the whole graveyard theme and mechanics of black. One thing that werewolves and vampires have in common is a powerful hunger and an impulse to attacks and bite. That is like the shared color of red. Gruul isn't the most relatable color pair. However it definitely has its appeal. It can play its part in the vivid diversity that is the color combos.

Even when divorced from the idea of living out in the wild, Gruul speaks of true authenticity, of not only being at peace with who and what you are, but celebrating it. In a world that constantly tells you that you're lacking, that your ideal self is always in the horizon, it's a welcome and cathartic relief to hear: "You're not just good enough. You're already everything you need to be."

Out of all the Guilds, I am Gruul. There is no doubt in my Heart and Gut (Which is what guides my path). I hate the world man has made. These social rules, societal expectations, laws, structures and Even comforts that hold me back and make life more complex and what it needs to be. I hate how it can make me feel weak at times. I also think man doesn't realize civilization is just following nature in a twisted way they don't even realize it. We are all animals deep within. I am most happy though being Free and away from the Internet, away from people and out in nature where I am self reliant. Nothing beats this feeling looking at the stars at night around a fire with good food, drink and good company who appreciate it with you. I also love going to old buildings people have forgotten about and seeing how nature reclaims what is hers. It's beautiful. I admire the strength of beasts and the fortitude of nature and i grow this within myself. One day, I'll give up everything in this world of man after I'm done with it and live off nothing but myself. I will die like this and return this vessel back to mother earth hopefully in a condition to let her know I appreciated what she gave me. If this doesn't make me Gruul, I don't know what does lol

As a rakdos I see society as something that holds me back as well. But I'd be lying if I say I don't like taking advantage of some things it made possible. For me ut is what it is, I take advantage of what I can, discard what I can not, allow myself to be a hypocrite when fit, living life one step at time. Not that different from each other but at the same time completly different.

After watching this, and rewatching your Naya video- I think that the quiz was wrong to remove white from my identity. I mean, I relate to a very heavy amount to the feelings this video portrays (which is why I do believe Gruul is the highest part of my identity), but white plays a very heavy role in my beliefs and actions. Very good video though- great timing to help me figure out how I feel about my last color pie quiz result.

Evil green/red is the belief that there is a correct, natural order of things (Green) and the willingness to lash out so others adhere to it (Red). It's the Gruul Clan philosophy without moderation. It's Klothys' mandate on fate. It's thinking you're right and not resting until everyone else knows it. On a similar note lot of people treat Black/Red like the colors of facism, but that's only because of real-world association. Mandatory conformity to tradition, the culling of the other, and military might making right? That's not black red. That's green white

@DiceTry I would agree that expanding on your previous venture into evil, you dove into the different sides of white, showing how both Elspeth and the White Preator are both true representations of White mana. My my, this video was such a positive surprise - I came here expecting comparisons with the iconoclasts of the Catholic Church Reformation or perhaps the Celtic warrior still furiously charging full force at their enemies centuries after the Romans introduced the shield wall as the superior battle tactic. Instead, the Gruul narrative here aligns way more with my most spiritual peers ('as they comprehend they're an integral part of a larger cosmic dance" - sounds just like Alan Watts), or - better even - all of my friends who either talk about, or effectively moved to an eco-village and are now exploring new life themes life harvesting their own food. This is such a sweet view on Gruul - and one that I deeply appreciate. This whole video made me think of how different the Magic the Gathering universe could be if only the main game was not about violence. What if Magic was a game about building magic societies? What if it was about making magic art? I think we'd see the beauty of Gruul quite often - rather than its rage. Amazing video as always :)

So, I think I have a great Gruul dnd character. There is a lot of details and story but I will give a basic run down of the primary things I want to draw attention too. 1: He refuses to let others fight his battles and has jumped out to fight outnumbered against enemies who should have outclassed him and won. 2: Family isn’t blood, on the course of the campaign, 4 different figures who were quite evil were at his parties or his own mercy. Each of these figures not only did he give a second chance, power, and trust, but he saved their lives and put his own on the line doing so. 1 of these characters tried to kill him on multiple occasions and failed, and when he was beat and could have been killed by a foreign power my character saved him, didn’t take any of his power away, and in the end the two are close friends who would die for the cause of saving the werewolves. 1 of these characters was a ass the entire time we knew them, and when they found their brother had been taken my character refused to let them do it alone and helped them save their brother. This character turned around and tried to kill the party and ended disappearing. We would learn at the end of the campaign they had had their memories erased and been shapeshifter into an NPC in our party, and when the party wanted to kill them after learning this Bigby got between the party and them and saved them. They are close friends. The last one was a corrupt queen who had stolen family and crown from two different party members. When captured there was talk of the death sentence and imprisonment. My character threw a lifeline, offering a position of power and influence, wealth, and diplomatic immunity and protection to her. She has been faithful and trustworthy, and enjoys working with him. These are his family that he made. Not because it was convenient or beneficial or even smart. But because he saw in them that gaping hole that had plagued him since he lost his family too. 3: He believes that nature will take its course and at some point he will die, but he doesn’t sit idly by and allow others to mess with the natural order. When an election for world leader came about and he realized none of the candidates are beneficial to his people, and none of them wanted to let everyone simply do as was natural to them and their people, and refused to stand idly by, instead joining as a candidate for the election and fighting for the right of people to live their lives as their morals and customs dictated, not forced into some system to be nothing but a number. 4: At the end of the day no matter if it would be smarter to keep his head down to remain anonymous, when innocence is threatened he will not stand idly by and will reveal himself in an instant to save a person that he could save if he acts NOW there isn’t time to wait for for a perfect world and for everyone to follow orders, good people need to act now, and not wait for some bureaucrats to say it’s ok, or for their systems to make everyone a law abiding citizen. It shouldn’t matter if the system agrees, good people should fight evil wherever they find evil. But everyone isn’t good or ever will be, and if you aren’t capable of defending yourself, then no one is responsible for your safety other then you. Longer then I thought. I think he’s Gruul personally, as he is so staunchly in favor of freedom and personal choice, but isn’t super self interested or ambitious either, whilst having zero delusions on the flaws of mortals and the fact it is a waste of time to try for perfection in anything, just do the best you can with, what you got, when you can and don’t be afraid to do what you feel is right, regardless of others opinions or what the “smart thing is”. Anyway, give thoughts if you got them, peace.

That's when Red is paired with Black that will reject Destiny, Red paired with Green is more like how you naturally act and express yourself as a living creature. Destiny for this pair is not an external force that controls them, it's their internal nature that drives them to fulfill those certain outcomes because they refuse to change(Green) and act before they think(Red). It ends up being a self fulfilling prophecy for Gruul and the reason why Blue is opposite of this pair, Blue thinks in the long term before making a decision and being the color of nuture, believes that you are a blank slate who can be molded in any way you wish to be.

I'll be honest...I don't vib with Gruul that much. My core is white, so while my ally is green...I am suspicious of red. To me, red taints the tranquility of green and makes it completely untamed and chaotic. It turns the magnificent animals of green into rampaging beasts! It makes green angry...and we don't like green when it is angry. Yeah Gruul is definitely not a philosophy I can get down with, because I do believe that there is way more out there to find. Gruul just...jealously defends its spot and doesn't think to go beyond with blue or become even greater with white. Don't get me wrong, Gruul is fun in moderation and there is no one else I would want by my side in combat than those in Gruul. But to live that way constantly? It feels so...limiting. Not to yuck anyone's yum if you do live by the Gruul philosophy. You do you...just do it over there please. XD

I identify with black red at the moment, i see these interpretations of green red as something that shouldn't be strived for. saying that civilization has stripped us of our human nature is like saying an ant is stripped of their ant nature because they were born inside of an anthill. if your life is so sad and you're so upset with everyone and everything around you placing limitations on how you can act, then make the world bend or break in such a way that will make you happy. i don't think you need to burn all of your money and be homeless to do that. as a matter of fact, i tend to think the power you hold in your possessions and civil comforts allow you to break that misery better than any kind of wild natured idiocy can
