In this video, we talk about the Pikeville Cut-Through Project and how our City moved a mountain. It was called Hambley's Dream, and Dr. William C. Hambley pursued this project with a passion for over thirty years, beginning even before he began his 29 years of service as Pikeville's mayor. Once completed, the Cut-through project would move nearly 18 million cubic yards of soil and rock at a total cost of about $77.6 million. Today, the C&O Railroad, the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River, and a modern, four-lane highway pass through the channel formed through Peach Orchard Mountain. This highway combines the traffic from four major routes and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet estimates that about twenty-five thousand cars pass through it daily.

I played my part in that cut thru. My husband and I hauled tons of ice to the site to be dumped into the cement in the heat of summer so that the cement would cool as to not set up so quickly.

I was born in Pikeville in 1949 and my Granddad owned Big Sandy Electric and Supply and I well remember the many floods. Haven't been back since the cut-through was done.

Do you think they will re-build the structures that are in the flood plain? A lot got wasted during this latest flood...
@pikevillehistorymoments7860
Pikeville itself was very fortunate in that we didn’t have any flood damage. It was mostly just to the south of us, where our neighbors were hit hard. We hope people don’t forget about them. The state is encouraging building up out of the flood plain and they have made a few announcements about spending state money to establish housing at higher elevations. So we don’t think everything will be built back by any stretch.
