The Pinnacle of MARSHALL Guitar Tone!

I'm playing a 2009 Marshall 1974X with a 1968 G12M25 Greenback in it and it NAILS the tone of the 1975 Kiss Album Alive! I've been trying to recreate this tone for over ten years now and I think finally did it! Not Paul's and Ace's great playing of course but the tone itself! I'm using a 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom with a 1977 DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge.

I love 70s hard rock...be it Free, Bad Company, Kiss, Aerosmith, Sweet, Foghat, Edgar Winter Group etc, and you are the only youtuber that directly addresses the guitar tones I love and want to replicate. Thank you Johan.

I really love Hendrix's live Marshall tone, during moments where he wasn't using alot of effects. I do like his usage of effects, but he often had a really good tone during moments without the effects. Granted, his style wasn't straight up hard rock like what came later. But aside from that, the whole decade of the 70's following his death was the best era for hard rock guitar tones IMO. I do like the higher gain stuff that came later, but I still prefer the old school cranked Marshall sound that came before that.

The reverb really makes a difference in sounding "live". You're almost at 100k subscribers which is way lower than it should be. You should be at least a million by now, considering you're one of the go-to sources in this kind of stuff and sound experiments.

Great work Johan.... As usual. I rarely comment but I've been watching your videos for a couple years now. 1977 was a good year for me When it came to Kiss. I bought my first kiss album, Hotter Than Hell in 77. I remember being enthralled with not only the music but the pictures on the cover. 14 years later a CD wouldn't have had the same effect. That same year, I bought kiss alive. I literally played that album until I wore it out. In the autumn of 77, Kiss came to town. I got to see the original lineup during their tour through Canada. It was a good concert though their makeup was a little sloppy. Lol Decades later, kiss alive one has become a classic. Full of great rifts and lead work. I'm in my fifth decade now and I still love listening to that album

Great experiment Johan. When I was in high school, my friend was taking drum lessons. The teacher’s brother was a guitar player and ex roadie. He said that his good friend was a roadie for kiss at the height of their heyday with Ace on guitar. He said behind the wall of empty Marshall cabs were a only a few Fender Twins with nothing else!

Sounds really great! Really gets that "ALIVE" tone. There was a copy of Kiss Alive in my elementary school library the year after it came out that someone had donated. My friend Eddie and I put it on one of those school record players with the plastic headphones and my 9 year old brain was totally blown away by the sound and the look of the band on the cover. Before that it was Beach Boys and 50s rock and roll, but after that it all changed. My Mom was our school librarian and she wasn't too pleased to find me listening to Kiss, which might have only made me like it even more! Sorry Mom!

The closest I sounded to Ace was using a Les Paul with a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge position, and ......a JCM 900 SLX 100 watt with 5881 tubes played at an overdrive preamp level matching Alive! ( no crazy distortion, but beautiful harmonic drenched crunch ), and the master volume loud, but not ear splitting volume! I have many '70 Superlead 100 and 50 watters, but that JCM 900 SLX set at moderate overdrive is just crazy plexi zenith tone! A four by twelve cab with Celestion greenbacks of course....
