The Pioneers of Sailing Videos - Distant Shores Interview 

I started my career in video production back in the 1980's. It was a real treat to hear the stories about "the good old days" of video shooting, editing and broadcast. I shudder now to think of how many hours I spent in edit suites, much to the chagrin of my family at the time. Your hard work and dedication to producing quality episodes has always stood out to me. Keep up the great work, Delos crew!

Distant Shores was the first sailing show for me. I can't believe I get to rediscover them all over again! 🍻

I started watching Cheryl and Paul on Cottage Life tv in Canada... they are what led me to search other sailing videos on RU-vid and finding SV Delos... I’m such a fan of both so it’s wonderful to see them together! 😍

Brian, you should become a talk show host! That was a great interview. Paul and Sheryl were fun to listen to, and so informative. And their history in documenting their sailing life, WOW. I'm old enough to remember all that old technology. At least they didn't have to start with really old FILM movie cameras! 8 - O

We met Paul and Sheryl at the Annapolis Boat show once, they were so kind!

Paul and Sheryl are from our hometown and we have sat in on many of their presentations at the Toronto boat show and we even saw them and their second distance shores boat when we were in the Bvis!! It’s do great to see channels get together!!

An interesting comment Brian said was something like, "we started sailing to disconnect, and now because of our lifestyle and profession, we find it hard to disconnect". Paul added "people want instant replies". So true, we are all on a 24/7 leash. Great episode gang! You have so much in common, and so many experiences between the 4 of you! Congrats!

You covered things about the making of these videos that I hadn't even considered. You make it look so easy but I didn't realise the amount of work involved in these 25 minute shows. The editing, the music, the monetisation; The hidden soap-opera behind the scenes... So much more personal stuff I'd love to know... Perhaps you're saving stuff for a future book? I've been playing catch-up with Delos since discovering your channel a few months back now and it's amazing just how the quality has improved since the very beginning. I do hope you keep those early ones on here as they show just what is possible for beginners; something to aspire to. To do all of this and keep your boat aflaot is just simply amazing; you guys must have super-powers. I'm loving your channel immensely; the TV hasn't been on once since I found you.

Like others here, I got hooked on sailing through Travel and Discovery channels' broadcasts of "Distant Shores." I have been fortunate enough to travel to many of the locations I first saw through their lens, and it was a great pleasure to be able to tell them that in-person at the Annapolis Sailboat Show in 2017. The best part of Paul and Sheryl is that their love of the cruising lifestyle, sailing, and travel, and sharing it with others, remains undiminished after almost 3 decades. I look forward to watching Delos grandchildren 2 or 3 decades from now in real time on my holographic display!

Very good interview, Brian. As a retired video editor it was interesting to hear them talk about how they got started. I spent 35 years in the business starting in 1969! The changes in technology were immense. For most of the time I worked with analogue tape. First it was 2" reel to reel, then 1", then 3/4" or 1/2" cassette, and finally digital tape. By the 90s digital editing was appearing which was an enormous change. With tape if you wanted to add a shot in the middle, you had to re-edit everything following! We had computers to control the tape, so a lot could be automated, but it still took time. The cost of a tape edit suite seems to have been similar in Europe. Around £1K per 8 hour day. The biggest change from my point of view, is that editing on tape from the camera originals would get you about 1 minute of finished material per day, whereas now it is about 1 minute per hour. When I retired the technology had just reached the stage of being able to edit on FinalCut Pro at full 1080. Before that you would have to work at a lower resolution to produce an "off-line" cut which would then be conformed from the HD tapes or files. The other thing that happened is that I got to edit actual film! this was in the 90s, and the film would be digitized so I could edit it on a computer. This would produce a negative cutting list, the neg would be cut and then digitized to allowed the sound work to be done. Now you can shoot in 8K, edit and do all the effects digitally and then project digitally. And even more amazing to me, I can shoot in 720 with my still camera, and edit it on my laptop! Keep up the good work guys. I love the quality of your channel. If I was still in the business, I would not hesitate to hire you to shoot and edit for me. I used to sail back in the day, mainly round the south coast of England, and in the Channel, but also in the Med. Watching your stuff brings back good memories.

Well this Delos video is an eye opener. To Paul and Sheryl Shard a very big applause. Watching and listen to the differences then and now is an eye opener. You mentioned the commercial side a bit is another hurdle to deal with. This Interview by Bryan and Karin is so enlightening. I do recall playing with editing real to real back in the 80's. The modern youtuber should have a good look at this video. Get an understanding of spending 3 years to get a 1 hour documentary floored me. To the two sailing channels I have watched for past couple years thank you for all your effort and time.

great video guys! it is amazing to see the shift from cassette SD to uploading 4k. I can only imagine the time involved in working with older equipment. Even editing something from a few months ago can be taxing not to mention 3 years. It is so easy to film your personal adventure and very hard to get it all edited as more time passes. Some useful tips guys thanks for sharing.

@SVDelos Great interview! Loved hearing Distant Shores history! It's remarkable how far technology has come in such a short time. When I started selling fax machines in 1983 I was often asked: "that's great but who would I fax"? When I started selling offshore cruising boats in 1987 there was no internet, GPS, chart plotters, AIS or sat-com!

I live in Texas dfw dont have a sail boat no plans to ever sail, yet I enjoy all tech about sailing and feel I've learned so much from watching sailing channels, that has enriched my understanding of the earth and cultures around the world.

Thanks for the inspiration! It’s amazing how technology made it so much more accessible for both creators and viewers. It seems the challenges of being discovered and to be able to make a living out of the work you put in are so different. Also, it’s good to hear that the time from shooting footage to pushing publish most of times isn’t “the daily vlog from yesterday” for you guys either. We’ve been struggling with keeping up the edits as we sail almost every day and shoot gigabytes every week. Finding the balance to sit down and stay on anchor and NOT EXPLORE THIS WEEK is very challenging we found. Thanks for the interview! These words keep us going! 😘

I've mostly stopped watching TV. Every time I'm watching some program, I want to comment about something but can't. I could possibly write a letter or an email but the likelyhood to get a reply seems to be pretty minimal. On RU-vid, when I write a thoughtful comment on one of the channels I'm watching, I frequently get an answer, a heart tag or at least comments from other watchers. This feels really rewarding, interacting with all these people. Also, sometimes there is a chance to visit some of them, which is really great. (At least I think so) the people in the videos are really the people you've seen in the videos and not just some actors.

Ahhhh Kazza & Brian, that was such an eye-opener; almost makes a person scared to RU-vid and edit. You could get lost in the editing process all by itself. No wonder why you guys are showing episodes from months ago. Thank you for once again stepping outside the box and doing this excellent interview with Paul and Sheryl. When I was a kid we had 8mm film which you had to physically cut with a scalpel, each frame you wanted to edit. It was great fun, especially sellotaping them back together. Animation had to be done physically too, filming objects/writing/Plasticine models etc a couple of frames at a time. I loved it a lot. So easy now tho, gives a lot more time to do other things lol, like watching your shows. Damn....I love technology :)

Watching Distant Shores brought me to Delos! My two first (and favorite) channels!

Great interview Brian! Such an amazing insight into the world of a quality you tube videographer. It is not just point shoot and make some bucks. It is a lot of hard work to generate a high quality of work with a significant investment in camera gear, computers, and software to get the job done and keep people coming back for more. SV Delos you have done such a fantastic job at this. Distant shores I love both Paul and Sheryl as well and you both put out a great product as well! Fair winds and best wishes!

I used to watch Distant Shores on Saturday afternoons when I was in high school (back in the mid-90’s)! Was delighted when I came across them on RU-vid a few months ago. Probably their fault that I love traveling so much.

Really outstanding interview-fascinating to see the transition over time. Absolutely loved this. Used to watch Distant Shores on broadcast/cable when my children were just babes. Love following them on here now.

Fantastic introduction to the history of making sailing movies! This illustrates the enormous effort and dedication that is needed by those who decide to do this. It’s not easy and the fact that it looks so easy is proof of that, but this is the best taste of how hard the effort is that I have seen. Also, if very smooth and deliberate transition to solicitation for funds! A better job I have never seen.

This was such a fantastic history lesson!!! We were really surprised to have not heard of SV distant shores but now totally going to check them out!! Thank you for being so inspiring... we bought a drone and fly it around our Hobie... sail on SF Bay... did our first trip to the BVIs in April that was EPIC and can’t wait to go again and retire on a boat together!!!!

I watch Distant Shores on AWE. It’s always nice look at my dvr and see Distant Shores. I actually just checked and one recorded today. Season 10 episode 8, Green Turtle Cay. Can’t wait to watch it.

One couple pioneered the art of sailing lifestyle videos the other perfected it.

That was some great insight from a lovely couple and from all reports, legends of the seas. There sure is a lot of work that goes into these productions and always show my gratitude with a thumbs up and a comment if I have one. Whilst not always at sea in his adventures, if you have never heard of him, do some research on a man by the name of Alby Mangels. He set sail in the 70's on a late 1800's yacht that he navigated with compass and sextant on what he called a world safari. Alby was THE man and no situation flustered Alby. He just got shit done with a whole lot less than what is available today. cheers.

We absolutely agree with you that the Shards are pioneers of sailing videos; I would go a step farther and call them The Godfather and Godmother of sailing videos. We love Paul and Sheryl. Delos is awesome as well. Really, we like all of the channels out there, but these two are the best (Distant Shores and Delos). 😊

Ridiculously vague. "Before rolling burritos". Useless. Grrr. And while I am super disappointed with Brady's Delos tanline (do it again, please!!) from Season 1, I'm super interested in the evolution of the term Breeyawn.

As for me I love to see the boat working. The sail changing. How the charts are looking from time to time. Dealing with customs and what you need to stop in another country.
