Haha those jars are pretty clever. I've used the same technique to trap unwanted pests inside my house. Pretty cool catches though, I find millipedes in my plants containers outside in my garden quite often, they seem to be pretty abundant in my backyard.
NIce. Word of caution - learned from experience - pit traps fill up with water when it rains, and that can have bad consequences fro anything it traps. A roof might help with something small like a jar, but I've had a nightmare with the bucket traps I've been checking as part of my job. I put small drainage holes in the bottom thinking that would solve the issue - but the trouble is that if the water table is very high, water actually comes up through the holes instead of draining out of them. Fortunately the buckets are being used to catch newts, and they love a bit of water, but it can be a pain to see them if there's 6 inches of muddy water in there.
At about 3:58 there is a tiny spec of a bug that crosses the frame. Compared to the spider, it's as small as the spider is to a human (or PZ :). There are also yet smaller organisms that you can't see with the naked eye.
don't know if you have seen this before, but this looks like a really well done 3d animation of spider internal anatomy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JpuqwfKR66U.html thought you might like it.
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Myers, who once aspired to be the Fifth Horseman, reduced to studying spiders in his backyard. Didn't Milton say something about one of the pleasures of Heaven was watching your enemies in Hell?
It's been a while since I heard that myth. No, I never aspired to be a "Fifth Horseman." I found the conceit of that self-anointed "horseman" role offensive, stupid, and contrary to the ideals of atheism -- they couldn't appoint themselves Atheist Popes, so they went with a goofy but catchy title instead. You know I gave a whole speech on that to the American Humanists, right? You just didn't understand it.
