I Like to show you a village which is sometimes over looked, Rabat its a village located in the West of Malta, just outside Mdina. The name of the village means a 'suburb' in Semitic, as it was once the suburb of Mdina, the old capital city. In the 15th century, while the area served as a shelter from constant pirate attacks, several religious orders arrived in Rabat, remaining there ever since. When the Order of St. John arrived in Malta, Rabat earned significance for its close proximity to Mdina, St Paul’s Grotto, the Covent Schools and for the arable farmland in the village.

So many memories, my Nana lived close to that part of Rabat near the secret garden, that restaurant across use to be my dress makers house her name was Jessie. When I was young before I came to Australia they use to do dances in the secret garden during carnival. So many memories. Thanks for the memories. I grew up in Rabat and so proud of it. We are planning on visiting Rabat and Mdina soon as we went on a trip last year and it was a flying visit. The sun lighting up the buildings looks very pretty. Thanks again Steve

NEVER TIRE OF HISTORIC & BEAUTIFUL MDINA AND "RABAT"🚶⚔ 🛡 🎥. Rabat was always my late Dad's favourite. Must say it has changed a lot with all those bars, restaurants and the museums open to the general public/tourists. I read somewhere that "Tas-Serkin" cafe/bar changed hands few years ago. Steve, how about interesting "Roman Villa" ⚔🛡? 🤔 THANKS for the lovely walk Steve 🚶 🎥 👏. Cheers 👍 🇲🇹 ♥ 🇪🇺 ™

Hello Steve, nice video. But please note that the original capital of Malta was Rabat. It was the Arab occupiers who decided that Rabat was too big to surround with bastions, so they created Mdina, which they walled and made it into the capital.
@EnglishmaninMalta
@EnglishmaninMalta Год назад
Thanks, But I always understood the first capitol of Malta was birgu ? And that area of Rabat/ Mdina was called it melita which was split, but I am not historian, dont even remember what I said ?
@pawlupasparawlu
@pawlupasparawlu Год назад
@@EnglishmaninMalta Hi, Birgu did not even exist at that time. Do some basic research. You should pay a visit to the National Library in Valletta. You will be amazed at what you will find. Anyhow Rabat was the original Capital of Malta and the Roman Villa in Rabat was the residence of the Roman governor, in Roman times.

Yes Rabat have many secrets that I have not even touch on in this video, some impressive catacombs and archaeological remains that conceal the great historical and cultural value of this small city and its traditions, sunday market and the village with the most churches to mention just a few things

We have an appartment in Qawra but last year we spoiled ourselves and booked a studio appartent with a private hot tub and deck area in xara Palace…. Oh boy it was absolute heaven! To wander the streets of Mdina in the early hours was like a ghost walk, eerily quiet, the atmosphere was something else 💖

We visited Rabat years ago, it was beautiful. We remember that just off the square as we got off the bus, we had some very good pastizzi, and a cup of tea from a big urn from a small cafe that was very popular. My father served in the war in the military hospital which I was so interested to see, such a shame that it has not been preserved as an important monument. It’s totally derelict, yet it must have served as an important military hospital during the war. My father served in the Royal Army Medical Corp. Are they going to do anything with it?
