This video explores the plague; how pandemic outbreaks birthed the monsters and demons of our myths and legends, and how its impact is still prevalent in our everyday consumption of modern pop culture.
On fatal diseases, dragons, vampires, zombies and somehow I managed to squeeze Albert Camus into this again.

@@fleshylattice there are upsides and downsides to both. RNA viruses can be harder to treat, due to the fact that they make more "errors" and thus spawn more strains of the virus quicker than DNA viruses. Bacterial infections you can treat by antibiotics, but that can lead to antibiotic resistance, which can be seen with MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus). Viruses have very few broad-spectrum treatments in comparison to bacteria. In summary, there's not necessarily a "worse", there's just different problems that each can cause. What determines what makes pandemics worse in terms of bacteria versus viruses depends on more factors than whether it's a virus or bacterium being the infectious agent.

This is so good. It reminds me of all the documentaries I used to sit and absorb for hours on the History and Discovery channels, only, interestingly, much higher quality. Also, heads up, when you were describing Yersinia Pestis and everything it can cause, I felt my skin starting to crawl. The best part about these types of RU-vid videos compared to the docos on the History channel is that there is very little filler. The history channel videos constantly repeat themselves and re-use the same footage so that it fits into the 22-minute or 45-minute time slot with commercial breaks, and the extremely fast time-to-publish means that they couldn't fill all that time with useful content. They also often had too-many-cooks syndrome with too many writers and not enough consistent vision on what the final product would look like. Meanwhile Ragnarox's videos are slow to come out but of high quality, with a consistent writing voice and theme throughout, without any limitations on when it needs to cut for commercial breaks or fit into a television timeslot. Also, I can watch on double speed with subtitles! Retention of the things I've learned from this video I wouldn't doubt exceeded the retention of those shitty French Revolution videos I had to sit through in history class.

You missed a very important detail about La Peste, at least, I think you did: The fictional algerian city, and how the plague affected it, was meant to be allegorical to Paris under nazi oppression, drawing ominous parallels between oppression and a pandemic, showing how the most horrifying aspect of the plague and oppression is how it makes men into paranoid monsters

Monsters or the Week just keeps getting better and better. Keep up the good work! Plagues are super freaky as antagonists, because they can't be directly fought. You can't punch a disease in the face. But they're an insidious thing that grows inside of you. It's unsettling as hell.

The Strain by Guillermo del Toro treats vampirism as a literal plague. In it, a doctor from the CDC tries to find a cure for it. But at the same time a story is told about an old man who knows more of it, knows the ancient vampire that's been lurking in the dark for so long to finally spread this new desease in the modern era, and tries to stop it for good. Anyway, very good video. Always looking forward for your work.

You're really good at explaining things, you have a great... tone for it ? I think you might be my favorite "educational" youtuber right now. I also really like the fact that you seem to take great care to pronounce non-english names properly. A lot of content creators on RU-vid don't, and that's a shame. It might be a detail but I think it's a very respectful and admirable thing to do ! Keep it up !

At the whim of a microscopic organism, the human race could be subjected to such horrors and suffering not known for a long while. We forget just how truly fortunate we are to live in a society of such highly sophisticated medical technologies and general knowledge as to so far avoid another unimaginable pandemic.

We're definitely due a pandemic. Not looking forward to it. I was hoping to live to old age and spend my last years in a kickass VR game. Oh well.

Great video! One minor nitpick, while pestilences are mentioned throughout the Revelation of John, the 4 Horsemen are Conqueror, War, Famine, and Death. Conqueror often gets replaced with Pestilence in myths that use the 4 Horsemen, probably because its more interesting and inherently frightening.

15 minutes in, and I'm hooked. It does make you think that the 4 horsemen went around hand in hand trying their own hands on mankind. Kinda made me think that War and Pestilence inspired biological warfare. Disease, vampires and zombies had always gone hand in hand. Funny thing is, I hadn't considered the plague association up until I read Stephen King's Dark Tower where the events of Salem's lot are referenced and vampires turn out to be carriers of HIV/AIDS and other blood related diseases. It's almost as if everyone knows in an unconscious manner the relation, but doesn't seem to notice it until it's pointed out to them. It brings the "Oh, yes I see" moment. On another note, this piece does bring out another interesting topic. Ignorance and the small town mentality. Small towns in general as a trope. What Stygma, tradition and religion can crop out in small secluded places. And, coming from a small town myself, can tell you that ignorance and superstition has a strong influence in what is taught and done. Most will deny certain things because of what modern society says, but they will strill practice they pagan esoteric roots in their homes. For reference, I grew up in Santiago del Estero, in northern Argentina.

Yeah, it seems to be this instinctive connection that we don't understand until someone points it out sometimes. Zombies = plague made sense to me because, well, a lot of zombie origin stories do begin with a plague of some kind that starts killing people en masse and they somehow resurrect but wrong. There's probably a lot of things zombies can/do symbolize in pop culture, sickness just being one of them. I had kind of an "Ohh I get it" moment when he was discussing vampires. It made sense to me that vampires were related to a fear of illness at least on the unsanitary level, but until he described them as pretty much being sickness given shape, the way that vampirism is spread and the effects it has didn't quite click for me as resembling plague victims.

The problem with zombie fiction is that everybody and their mothers has zombie fiction of some kind. The charm about zombie horror was the shock value. Most people acknowledge the fact that the dead can't, and shouldn't, walk. Because of this, there's something of a comfort zone, of which zombie horror takes us out. Essentially, because we've exposed to zombie horror for so long, we've adapted to and embraced the idea of living the simplest life possible. One of survival, one where you eat or you're eaten. Because of this, zombies just aren't that scary anymore.

Fun fact: the word "pest" came from the Black Death. If you think about it, when someone is called a pest, it implies that their presence is a pestilence. Rats, cockroaches, fleas, termites, and mice are considered pests because their occupation brings destruction and disease.

You're the best, Ragnar. I know you've had a tough time ever since the Adpocalypse but I just hope I continue to see your videos long into the future, even if I have to wait a bit longer than we all used to. You're very informative and memorable in your analyses and you definitely know how to edit a video. Cheers.

Late to the video, but I love the way you used the VTMB "Downtown" soundtrack during the bit around 3:30, considering the 'plague' questline takes place there, as well. Great video like always!

Just discovered this channel today and subscribed immediately after watching two Silent Hill videos and this one. Your editing skills and writing are both outstanding! Also you know what I'd reeeeally like to see you make a Bloodborne video, about its lore or mythology or generally anything. The game's a bit old but man do I love to see people talking about it...
