These little fish don't get the appreciation they deserve. The beauty coupled with personality just makes me sad to see them in little cups and I'm not one to particularly care about animal right's especially things like fish, but seeing them in those little cups kinda hurts when you've seen their personality come through when in a better and larger environment. They're really endearing little fish. Bettas and freshwater angelfish yank at my heartstrings in a way I didn't expect before I had experience keeping them. I love those little guys.
Such practice should be forbidden by a law. Simple but institutions don't care. Example: European Union multiple tons of stupid regulations but don't see fish needs, sad.
This ia a great video with beautiful footage. Thanks dor mentioning the activity levels in long finned bettas. I had one for a year and loved him, but Tassel started slowing down and resting a lot before he passed away... I always worried it was my fault. But he really was just getting older. Thanks, Dave.
I can't believe you said this isn't even one of your more beautiful bettas in your collection. He's a stunner! Would love to see the full collection! I'm sad to report my Thailand betta did not survive his abnormal growth. I think that will be my last time trying to import fish from abroad...that was a hard hit to the heart
It's always difficult to lose one of our little friends... Imported fish can be very tricky, and I totally understand. On a brighter note, guppies are so so much fun. I love watching them grow and multiply. Best of luck. ❤
@@TheDave333 THE FRY ARE ARRIVING! THE FRY ARE ARRIVING!! hahaha I can't tell which of my ladies are popping out the first few. They are so chill during their birth...gah! I turned down the lights and added more floaters and hiding spots for the babies. Eeee - can't wait to see how many pop out and observe any abnormalities. (said no one ever lol)
I know one fishkeeper had a long finned betta who would constantly go after his tankmates. His giant fins slowwd him down and prevented him from posing a threat, but that didn’t stop him trying! (To the point his fins developed tears and got infected and he had to be moved to his own tank) Meanwhile she’d later get a plakat who was very chill. He nipped at her mystery snail a couple times out of curiosity but never bothered her tetras Shows that, just like with dogs, while we can generalize the behavior of certain breeds, they’re still individuals with unique personalities
I love plakat bettas! After long finn first betta fish, I got my first plakat from a breeder ( that fish was a firecracker . He attacked anything and everything!). Nowadays, I tend to lean towards more wild types. I currently have a 10 gallon with some chillie rasboras, alien betta male and a school of pygmy corydoras. IT is the most relaxing and satisfying 10 gallon tank I ever had!
@@TheDave333 oh they are spawning like crazy. I don’t do much to save the fry but my school of 7 is now expended to 9 😂. Recently, I saw some more fry hiding in catappa leaves .
He's so handsome and feisty. I've also read somewhere that plakats are the least derived from wild bettas which could explain their increased aggression and resilience compared to more derived variants. Strangely they're harder to find where I'm from but I'm hoping to get one someday.
Please don’t get a Plakat. Remember, they are very hyper aggressive and elite escape artists. You would basically get something close to a wild betta fish if you get one.
Their shorter fins also play a part in it Without those giant fins slowing them down they have a much easier time going after any tank mates, and there’s also less risk of them getting damaged or injected
Hi Dave, I'm the guy with the suggestions about the microphone in the last video. I think you nailed it! The noise is much better this time around and it's not distracting at all. Thanks, great video as always 👌
What a beautiful savage! Love his spirit! My long finned super delta is pretty savage too tho. He OWNS his 10g. This is gonna sound silly, but I was afraid he was lonely, so I made little fish cut outs of other fish breeds and put them on popsicle sticks to “swim” them past the glass to try and find a buddy he would be cool with… but nope. He don’t even wanna see a female swim by. He’ll kill all. Maybe I’m just a horrible artist lol 😂
@@garg4531haha yeah! I did what I could… but I did break and get him a mystery snail. I’m currently trying to rehome the snail for its own safety. No friends for my Guy.
More I look at him I see his strong personality. He is extremely territorial, he's swimming around guarding aquarium to be sure that nobody was dare to enter here. He can only tolerate lady fish who is in his gusto. Definitely he isn't stupid killer like some animals bred for fighting for generations. He has something special in his eyes 👀 😄. I think about name for him.
I’m not against Plakat bettas, but I personally wouldn’t want to own one. I have nothing against the breed, but I feel like the long finned bettas are more for me personally.
With an appropriately permanent grumpy expression, I love my Plakat betta. Similarly I also had to separate mine from the community tank of shy guys because he couldnt leave my SAE alone to do his job. Earned himself his own bachelor pad 😅 Lovely videos, well informed, and the footage is stunning. Thank you for your efforts! 💙
Ah, the splendid 70's and 80's; when Pla Kat Lug Mo Dam Dam were to be seen only in Black, Blue, or (less commomly) Metalic. Then was when Pla Kats were known to spit flames and evaporate their water like to power a steam plant. Their every hardened scale glistened to incandescent radiance and the under-eyes were semaphores of ready, eager death.
Word of warning. I recently put one of these into an open topped planted aquarium. Even though the water level was nearly an inch below the rim, the guy managed to jump out and I found him too late, alas. Was such a beautiful fish too. A real shame.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your little friend. That warning about them jumping is a really good point, and I should have put that in the video. They're much better jumpers than the long-finned bettas.
@@Rosiethecutecarp, that would ordinarily be very good advice, but the current in the aquarium is just a bit too strong for a long-finned to be comfortable, I think.
I haven't seen your other betas but this guy Is absolutely stunningly perfect blue on top where on the bottom and street with this gold band across his midsection it flares out and rays into his cuddle fin his dorsal fin and his anal fin he is stunning and he's feisty too.
My Plakat Betta is in a community tank and is very compatible with the rest of my fish. Tetra and a honey gourami , Ammano shrimp and Cory’s. He’s more scared of them than they are with him. He’s a blue green colour
Wow, such a timely video! Have been preparing a 15g, planted tank, specifically for a plakat betta. Fortunately, my intention was to keep it alone! Hopefully, I will be able to make friends with him, as I did not know these were the most aggressive of the betta's. Betta's that I've had in the past were very personable. Guess I'll find out!
Thanks for watching another one of my videos! Like people, they all have different personalities. I guess that's part of the excitement. It's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you'll get. ❤
The red dragon scale plakat in your video Dave is my favourite variety. The only problem with dragon scale bettas is that as they get older the scales have a tendency to grow over the eyes and they also are more prone to developing tumours. I spawned this variety a few years ago but unfortunately did not video the spawning and development of the fry. BTW I have a video on my channel of breeding a black dragon scale plakat with a blue female that I spawned at the time of the first COVID lockdown. It is not the best quality I’m afraid as I shot it on an iPad!?
I watched a video from Alex (Fishstory) about the prevalence ( or lack there of) of betacarotene in wild betta diets and that the colour red was correlated to increased aggression due to resource guarding behavior. Basically the toughest betta fish would have all the beta-carotene and those fosh would end up showing bright reds and orange hues as a sexual signifier,
In many fish species the colors red or pink will heighten when the fish get ready to spawn. Flamingoes do the same thing when getting ready to mate. Generally, the more red you have the healthier you are because it indicates that you've been eating well. Vertebrates can't produce their own Betacarotene, so it must be obtained by eating lots of food. So, the more red you have, the better of a parent you will be. This trend is common in many species. Red shows up as a sign of good health. And since the male betta does all the fry rearing, he needs to be healthy and well-fed.
I've had several betta fish and have just arrived home with a super plain dumbo koi plakat who was cheap because of his muted colours. It was a choice between him and a gorgeous red half moon betta. Im a sucker for the underdog! Plakats are feisty and wonderfully interactive. It was no contest, or at least a fleeting one.
2-3 years is average for bettas in general, though this can vary depending on factors such genetics, care, and of course, luck (or lack thereof as the case may be) Short-finned bettas are also generally less prone to issues than long-finned bettas
I’m not against this breed, but if you want a chill betta, I suggest you avoid the Plakat breed altogether because they are like Jack Russell terriers, strong willed and hyper aggressive. If you want to have personality you can get this betta breed. This is one breed of betta that I would never get unless I had to.
Thanks for watching the video. I have no problems keeping an aggressive betta. He's amazing! Most of my bettas live alone anyway, so it's all good. I love the variety. Your betta Sawyer is very beautiful.
@@TheDave333yes it is! The reason why I love my fish is because he has saved me from depression. Without Sawyer, I wouldn’t be here today. Sawyer is the reason why I am here to this day.
Not all plakats are like that though Know one fishkeeper whose plakat was very chill towards his tankmates I think the bad rep is because their short fins make it easier for them to chase after other fish I also read that halfmoons, etc. are considered the least aggressive but that same fish keeper also had a half moon that would constantly go after her other fish, but he wasn’t very good at it due to that giant sailfin slowing him down (not that it stopped him from trying tho!) While I do think genetics can play a factor in a betta fish’s aggression, it’s also important that they have distinct personalities and you can never truly predict how they’ll behave
My plakat is the sweetest ever. I own 7 Male Bettas btw. He lives in a tank with 7 other female Bettas, Mollies, Guppies, Platys, Neons…. And he is just chill.
Gorgeous markings on this guy, his form is quite different from the others, but very striking. He does rather look like a Boss. Is their fighting territorial, or just generally antisocial? I was told that they live in fairly muddy water in the wild, but I don’t know if that is true…it would be hard to make an impressive display if the ladies can’t see you. Thanks for this Dave.🤗🖤🇨🇦
Since bettas are often found in small bodies of water, they have to protect what little space they have with aggressive behavior. Some of it is caused by selective breeding by humans, and some of it is just a natural tendency to protect their small but valuable territory. Humans run into a similar problem with aggression when we're crowded together in densely packed cities. Not so different from fish. . . ❤❤❤
@@TheDave333 Thank you, I see your point about crowding being a factor…seems like every species needs a degree of personal space. The selective breeding for aggression is for the Beta fights humans set up and bet on I assume. I hope they don’t make them fight to the death. I am opposed to all the creatures being made to fight for the owners to get money off, and there are so many it is done to…there is something very wrong with people who do that. I hope you are having a lovely week.💖🖤🇨🇦
They don't fight to the death, all a fish has to do is get its opponent to back down and give up. Still, I don't condone letting them fight for fun or for profit. On a happier not, Spring in on the way. . . I miss the warmth.❤
@@TheDave333 I’m glad to hear. They don’t fight to death…they are so beautiful, and I’m sure that fighting is stressful for them. Thanks for easing my mind at ease. Yes, Spring is on the way, a bit early for us, but it seems like that is the new patternbband the green over the long winter, just seeing the first signs of the changing season brightens me up and makes me happy. I wasn’t built for winter, and here I am living in Toronto.❤️🖤🇨🇦
I was born in the United States Virgin Islands, so I'm not built for the winter either! I do miss the sun and the ocean, but I love living in the New England.
Plakats are bred for fighting the Chinese traders bought plakats from Thailand to China and crossed with some gourami species to create plakats like pitbulls they are still used in Thailand and Vietnam for fighting and gambling the aggressive nature in their DNA, bigger body and short fins gets them edge over other bettas in fight. Colors also play a crusual role red and blue mixed bettas are usually more aggressive and more stable
@@TheDave333Sure, video showing all your Betta collection will be so interesting, they are amazing fish 🐟. Although, Louis have predisposition to be superstar.
Constantly angry, beautiful personification of Death To All Fishes 💀 ! He must be offspring of true figting siamese genetic line. Those Bettas popular in aquarium are from decorative lines, only some of them show unstoppable aggression. Please, more footage from his life .
Ha! So what?! You may BE first, but, I BElieve I'm Firrrrst...!!! Still, here's your stupid prize.🏆 Savor the Victory. It'll never, ever, happen to you, again.
