The play that earned Tony Romo a spot on the Dallas Cowboys roster (2004)

Cowboys Coach Bill Parcells said the gutsy play that Tony Romo pulled off in the pre-season game against the Raiders in 2004 is what won him a spot on the team. Tony went in the game with about 5 minutes left to play. At the goal line, he called a fake (or did he?) ball spike and dove into the end zone for the win. Tony was on the team in 2003 and in 2004 was on the verge of being cut from the on the roster and even though this performance helped, no doubt QB Quincy Carter's bad decision helped too. It would still be another two years before Tony got his chance to start.
***I had to follow up and comment about so many of you who have commented on how old the video looks. The quality is fine, it has been preserved since. I've seen more recent videos of games on RU-vid that are bad quality. Even though from 2004 and as technology has since improved, and the Oakland Coliseum with its sufficient lighting, it is not what it is like with todays lighted stadiums. It is pretty obvious that many of you were not familiar with the Oakland Coliseum.

The first 5 years or so were a roller-coaster ride for sure. So many great, clutch moments mixed with heart-wrenching, game-losing, snatching losses from the jaws of victory type moments. Those mindless INTS and pick-sixes stayed in the memories of his fans and critics for his entire career even though he learned from those mistakes and was a far, more careful QB in the later years of his career. The stats prove it.

I'm a Cowboys fan and a roller-coaster ride is the perfect analogy. And that's because, listening to the sounds from the sideline, Garrett reeled him in as his offensive coordinator. I heard one of the sports talk people say he suffered from overconfidence. That makes sense to me. I wonder where he would be if he would have taken what was there more often than trying to make every throw.

The Cowboys failed Tony Romo, NOT the other way around. People thoroughly exaggerate Romo’s FEW mistakes in important games, then underplay the FACT he was one of the most clutch QBs in NFL HISTORY. Romo hate = low football IQ

Yes sir, Romo was elite af.... Without him, those teams would have been unwatchable and they literally were when he was injured.... Aikman was carried by a great O Line, hall of fame reciever and one of the greatest rbs of all time... Romo didn't get shit till basically his last year, and he got them right there.... Romo was clutch af, always felt we had a chance with Romo no matter the score, and not a lot of QBs can get in a shootout with Peyton Manning

It’s so heartbreaking that Tony Romo never got a SB champ, hell to even get there. He was certainly elite enough to do it, but there was always a negative cloud mostly perpetuated by the media due to their disdain for the Dallas fans that always permeated Dallas’s success and lead to heartbreak. This year I think that veil will finally be broken and the Jimmy Johnson curse dead, but damn even that 2007 squad could’ve done it. So sad. But man he is one hell of a broadcaster now though and I’ll always be one of Romo’s biggest fans. I was even kind of mad at Dak Prescott at the beginning when he was doing so well, but with Prescott being so humble about it, and Romo willingly stepping away that helped me become a Prescott fan. But I know Romo will be pulling for Dak to pull it off.

Difference is Romo was talented enough but only had a truly talented squad his last good year. Daks had one thats only got better but somehow its not Daks fault. Romo had touch. Dak has no touch. He overthrows, underthrows, or throws too hard balls constantly. Ppl blame the wrs for dropped balls. Those are some of the best wrs in the league. Give Dak mediocre wrs and there would be twice as many drops. Hes a talented qb but is not elite and will never win a SB.

This comment section makes me proud to see so many others with the same opinion I always had. Romo on a better team would have won a SB. He carried Dallas most years kicking and screaming to the postseason. The best team he ever had in his whole tenure was that last one that lost in GB in the Dez catch game. They were always flawed in some way and got exposed in the postseason but Tony always gave them a chance to get there every year. Dallas let Tony down. And now there about to get bounced again this year because Dak and the Offense can't pull their heads out of their collective asses.

@@oodirtyaloo4767 they may have been Romos second best defense of his career but they were #9 in yards allowed, and #13 in scoring allowed. So they were not bad, but they were not great. They were great for Romos cowboys standards, but not for nfl standards. Also what does Romo, Simpson and Witten with their families at cabo have to do with Crayton messing up 3 plays in the second half? 2 drops, one could have been a td and at the very least a key third down conversation. And a slow down to not catch the game winning td. T.O. dropping a 50 yards bomb, potential td or at least it would have been close to the endzone. Or Fasano dropping a td that hit him in the chest. And so cowboys had to get a field goal, and the oline not blocking the second half? Maybe everyone should have went to cabo because Romo and Witten were the only ones playing to win that second half.

Weapons, oline, defense, run game, and easy passing rules? Romo would destroy this league. Just by looking at what he did with trash run games, trash olines, in a league where defenses could still cover and nail the qb and receivers.
@nd_irish_fan744
@nd_irish_fan744 2 года назад
All of the "bad" Cowboys teams Romo was a part of would have been absolutely putrid if not for Romo. Those 8-8 teams would have probably been 4-12 teams with any other QB. The worst thing that ever happened to Romo is when Parcells decided to retire. Had Parcells stuck around, there is no doubt in my mind the Cowboys would have won another Super Bowl. I'll go to my grave believing Jerry's signing of the head case T.O. was the last straw for Parcells. The moment I heard of his signing, I told my brother that it would be Parcells last year in Dallas. Lord only knows how good Romo would have been with a few more years under Parcells.
@thecensoredmuscle563
@thecensoredmuscle563 2 года назад
2012 and 2013 would have gone 0-16, 1-15 at best. They had trash olines, horrible run games, horrible defenses, 2013 was at the time the worst defense in the nfl that year and the third worst defense in nfl history, run games ranked from 24th-31st. Not to mention 2012 tons of the offense was injured or playing injured or going through a lawsuit (Dez) and screwing up every pass play, causing int, running wrong routes, no run games. Then most of the defense got hurt the second half of 2012, and Ware was at least still playing but with only 1 arm, as he couldn't really use the other. Those teams were statistically worse than 17 Browns, and 08 Lions, except for the passing games.

Always had a top few offensive lines in football, Demarco Murray later in Romo's career. He wasn't great in the playoffs, not as bad as some think but certainly not someone who ever carried his team in a postseason spot.

Danny White is what Tony Romo was believed to be. Danny White inherited a great team, only to throw costly interceptions and take costly sacks because of his immobility. He’s the one that drove Tom Landry into the ground when he on his own accord, took off running on a fake punt without consent.

I remember the Detroit game about 5 years ago. There was a minute 50 left we were ahead, Detroit had no timeouts. So what did we do, we checked down into a pass play. That ran 20 seconds off the clock. We had to punt to Detroit. and a team that could have been defeated had we just run the ball around in circles for a minute 50 seconds, won the game. with a minute 50 left, the other team has no timeout, What is the point in passing?

Yes, clock management seems to be a thing of the past. Coaches always seem to want to take supposed risks, when it's just stupid. The sad thing is, 90% of the time, it's just a matter of understanding a few basic rules and simple math. It's something a 15 year old kid can learn playing Madden. Why so many NFL coaches can't get it right is beyond me. Hell, it cost the Atlanta Falcons a Super Bowl

What about 2007..When he went to Cabo w/Jessica Simpson..Pretty sure he had the #1defense. Im 38, loved the cowboys my whole life, but he was never going to win a championship.

I have learned that it is pretty obvious youtubers most often do not read the description. It was the stadium lighting in Oakland, not the video.

Actually he did this a lot less than most. During his era QBs like Brady, both Manning’s, and even Brees threw more game losing interceptions. But for some reason Romos were always blown out of proportion. Well because he was the QB of the Dallas Cowboys. Cowboys fans did not deserve Romo. Cowboys fans deserved to be the Browns or Lions during that time which is what they would have been without Romo

You can’t be serious? Dak is an average QB and will be the reason Dallas doesn’t make it to the Super Bowl this year. Dak always finds a way to become mediocre at the end of the season. He’s a nice guy but we need a solid leader at QB!

I am sure that is out there somewhere, I like to post videos a little more unique if possible. That ended up being a playoff loss. If Romo runs that ball in the end zone, then it is a different celebration and conversation. Congrats to the Seahawks for stopping him.
