He's also one heck of a goalie coach. Bill Ranford is to hockey, what Mark Prior is to baseball imho.

Remember when Ranford came to the Bruins. He looked like he was going to be a good goalie but didn't think he was ever going to do what he did in that one playoff year. One other thing about Ranford.... he was an extremely nice guy. Even though he is not a HOFer he is well deserving of this career video and to be remembered.

He'll always be cemented in history celebrating the save with Team Canada in 1994 with I believe Paul Romanuk saying "It Is Over".

I watched all the great Oiler years from 1980 to 1992 and Ranford was arguably the best playoff goalie we ever had - Fuhr was excellent (mostly) but Ranford literally won games for the Oilers all on his own. He fully earned his Conn Smythe in 1990 and was excellent in 1992 shutting out the Gretzky-Kurri-Coffey-McSorley-Huddy L.A. Kings in the sixth game of that series.

I used to collect Bill Ranford hockey cards. I had almost every card released of him from his Rookie card up to about 1998 . over 325 cards in total

I was at one of his first games in The NHL. It was against New Jersey at The Medowlands. I remember how impressed I was by him.

I went to an alternate school in New West where Bill had started up a hockey program for us trouble makers. Didn't learn how to skate until I was 13 but Bill got me between the pipes trying my best. When he won the first Cup with LA he invited me to his home with his friends and family, I have pictures with the Cup that I still cherish today. Great man who I have the utmost respect for.

Thank you Shannon, my fave goalie from that time period. The first time I got to see NHL hockey on tv, it was the year the Oilers won it.

I remember he and Kirk McLean had some good battles. They were pretty comparable during that early 90s stretch. I did not look forward to the Canucks playing the Oilers around that time. But Ranford played a lot of international hockey, too from what I remember. I remember watching him play for Team Canada in the mid-90s.

Standup may not be as effective these days but it still has great elements such as relying on angles and rebound countrol, which is why Randford is such a good coach to others who use different styles.

That early 90's period he was probably the best in the world (Stanley cup and Canada cup MVP, pretty sweet) Grant Fuhr was pretty cool about the whole thing, plus Pokey Reddick got a cup ring. Sadly for Ranford like all stand up goalies however when his game went, it never truly came back.

Ranford was my idol growing. I'd model my game after him. He'd always keep you at the edge of your seat with his acrobatic double stack slides and windmill style saves. Later on, when we got CUJO and Salo, I realized how unnecessary Ranford's style was.. that it was more detrimental and risky than it was ever helpful. For the first time, I started feeling more confident in our goaltending with those guys in net as I watched Ranford's career turn for the worse. Ranford is still my all-time favourite goaltender, and if I had to choose, I'd watch him over anyone else, but I'd rather have someone with more sound positional play over him.

My favorite memories of Ranford are probably from this, being the somewhat surprise starter for Team Canada at the '91 Canada Cup when Canada several viable candidates for the position.

I'll never forget the injury he had towards the end of his stay in Washington. There was a slap shot. He stopped it. Then he stopped moving altogether for what felt like eons which was reminiscent of when Voltron would cut his enemy in half, but it took a few minutes to figure it. Finally, he toppled over. Fast forward a few hours his name appeared next the words "ruptured testicle" beside it on the sports ticker. Kinda makes you wish someone had the decency back then to label it "a lower body injury".

One of my first hockey cards in the early 90's was of Bill Ranford, I still have the card to this day. As I live in Sweden there wasn't too much to watch and read about the NHL for a very young kid. But I came to really like Ranford as I kept getting cards on him, as was the simple ways of liking hockey players back in the day in my simple world haha. In later years I've come to appreciate more exactly what he did and I'm glad my kid self was fond of Bill. I found others didn't seem to like him and maybe even thinking him being overrated. My inner kid doesn't care. Ranford is my favorite goalie all time, I saw nothing of him as he played sadly but the stories makes me happy :) that little card from all those years ago meant a lot. Sadly the last lockout made me loose my passion for the game after I just started to really deeply get into so much of the NHL. For about 2 years I've been watching THG and some with Steve Dangle just to pass time with the world "imploding" and I keep seeing what made me love the game so deeply. I still keep my distance as the league just upset me way too much, but I really appreciate the videos you do Shannon and huge thank you for this video. It's also funny that Ranford, Fuhr and Moog all are some of my all time favorite goalies, all for simple kid reasons ^^ haha. Others are Ed Belfour, Ron Hextall and from later years when I really started to get into the game Yutaka Fukufuji, I love my odd players as well haha. Adam Oates being part of one of the trades is one of my favorite players, I was so glad when he went into the HHoF. Anyway thank you for the video Shannon and have a nice day :)

It really shows how much it a team can influence a goalie when in the same season you win the same amount of games (3 in both Tampa and Detroit) in far less games with a better team! Unreal!

You can’t knock a guy who stuck in there with teams that only just used him as trade fodder even though he was still playing well but didn’t seem to complain a lot either when he was stuck on the Edmonton Oilers he just stuck it out and played his game good on him I remember him in the 90s
