First time chick owner. My barred Plymouth rock babies are almost 4 weeks old. They was super easy to raise. Heat Food and Water. At this point they are on autopilot. I check em and change the water twice a day. The brooder heater keeps temps around 85° and the few times it got around 75° they was only beginning to fuss. Anything above 90° was too much for them. At 3 weeks they had 90% of all their feathers. They can't go outside without heat control til they are fully feathered. They can go on monitored field trips and love the grass and clover. Get a cheap digital temperature gauge and keep it with the chicks 24/7 so u can see if your within safe temperature range. On days they go out move the temp gauge to where the chicks will be an wait 30 minutes for more accurate temperature reading and move em only after you know they are safe to be there. Ohh and at 3 weeks they can vertical jump over 2 feet. So have taller brooder walls.

Are you happy raising chickens? Did you like this breed?

@Jacob Sherer Great birds, forage well (read: will forage well enough to help keep feed costs minimal) if free ranged, they are quiet and friendly as chickens go which is great if your homesteading in an urban environment, and the concern about egg production is vastly overblown unless your talking about setting up a commercial egg farm, if your just homesteading or looking to feed your family, you can easily feed a family of four with 4-6 of them depending on how many eggs a week you use, figure about 200-280 eggs a year (more early on, less as they age) and count up how many eggs a year you figure on using. If you want more eggs but a similar temperament, look into Australorps, if you want a better forager and layer, and your willing to tolerate a bit more noise and unfriendly behavior (read: not a lap bird) look into Rhode Island Red's

@@johnhildenbrand2642 More eggs for you and your family then! For my own curiosity, may I ask where you are from? When I got my chickies I had no idea I'd get this many eggs! I have a pullet Plymouth and she is so adorable. Immediately she wanted human attention. Will sit on your foot as your walking, if you don't pick her up for a cuddle. She's also very game. Will pick a play fight with the cat and has made friends with the guard dog. The others won't go near the dog, and I don't blame them.

I love how they were deemed “not productive enough” since our Barred Rock, Roxanne, has averaged between 280-320 eggs since she started laying. I’d say that’s a pretty productive chicken😅!

@KyleKaiser7
@KyleKaiser7 9 месяцев назад
@@flip416 Congratulations on your new additions coming! While Barred Rocks can be super pushy and dominant in a flock, you have a bit of an advantage since they will be younger chickens joining the flock. Australorps are also pretty good at not backing down easily when it comes down to it, but I would keep a close eye on things once the newbies are old enough to join the flock just so that they don’t gang up on your Australorps; Barred Rocks specifically are notorious for sticking together very well, and I’ve seen this in multiple flocks (that’s why we only have 1, and she’s still towards the top of the pecking order on her own, as when they outnumber other breeds in the flock they can be overly aggressive and act like little feathery tyrants😅). They are incredibly smart and great with people (when worked with), just as long as you are committed to them, they are very sweet chickens that will follow you around like a dog. I wouldn’t trade my Roxanne for anything🥰!

@stevegodley8744
@stevegodley8744 Год назад
It's strange that most people say that this breed is easy going. Our daughter and her family have 3, and we have two. Both of us have found that the Plymouths by far are the most boisterous and aggressive towards the other birds. The bullying and feather pulling got so bad with these two that I've had to build a second coop and isolate them. To make matters worse, one of the two (right away) started picking on the other so much, that I had to divide the new coop and separate them as well. The remaining 4 hens (all different breeds) are now a peaceful, happy little flock. There is another RU-vidr (Country Living Experience) who did a couple of videos on how he had to separate his PBR hens from the rest of his flock for the same reason. They get along fine with humans, but are very aggressive towards other hens. My daughter has a PBR rooster in her flock, who seems to keep the bullying mostly under control, but she still notices that, if anyone is going to be dominant, it's always the PBR hens. My hens are well cared for, and I give them greens and treats and check up on them at least a couple of times a day, but they are not pets. They are here to give us eggs, and I'm not interested in dealing with unnecessary behavioural problems. Personally, i would never get this breed again. Just my take.
@hawkeyeten2450
@hawkeyeten2450 4 дня назад
It depends, from what I've seen. Some barred rock hens are gentler, others can be mean. I've actually witnessed a barred rock who actually would break up fights or stop bullying going on between other chickens in their owner's flock (kind of a "law and order" bird). There are some other breeds that seem MUCH nastier than them.

We got some from a coworker and they dont eat anything but grass, leaves, and ground corn. The guy we got them from only feed them ground corn. They completely ignore bread, bugs, spaghetti, and pumpkin guts. I have had some little successes with wild bird seed mix. Never had a breed of chicken that didn't love the things they ignore.

how are the bantams and how did it go inntroducing them to your big chickens (if you did) i have 2 black australorps and thinking about adding 2 more chickens next summer (was thinking bantams since i like the size aspect of them, but also may just get 2 more australorps or look for a different breed like barred rocks)

Does anyone know if anyone in the UK (preferably the south, but potentially anywhere) breeds buff Plymouth Rock bantams? Very specific I know, but we've always had them until a couple of years ago when our last one died of (very) old age. We now have Mille-Fleur bantams (and one Goldline hybrid), and they are lovely birds, but I cannot find anyone who breeds buff Plymouth Rock bantams in this country (or anywhere!), and they are such beautiful hens. My sister swears one of our older chickens of this breed lived to the age of 22 years! I don't remember but she seems certain. If so that would break the world record for the world's oldest hen by about a year.
