Walt watching an elephant documentary right at the moment he thinks he needs to die because now he´d still be remembered as a good person is quite clever. Elephants are known for mourning and remembering loved ones just like us, Walt wants his loved ones to feel the same as these elephants.

Yes! Season 2 was so good, the more you think about it the more you realize how important it is but also how great it is on its own, the scene with Walt and Janes dad alone is what makes it for me, and 4 days out is still my favorite episode, although Granite State comes close

Walt pondering meeting Jane’s father in the bar is incredibly interesting. Walt being a secular materialist and seeing him be forced to consider fate and the metaphysical was great to watch. There are a few scenes like this throughout the show… Another example of this would be the flashback at Grey Matter where they break down what makes up a person, and speak of the soul.

It may not be the best season objectivly, but for some reason I always came back revisiting S2 the most. I love the relationship between Jesse & Jane, the melancholic tone and Walt slowly descending down a hole, he would never be able to climb back up again.

Breaking Bad Season 2 masterfully deepens the complexity of its characters and themes. Walter White's transformation from a desperate teacher to a calculating criminal becomes more pronounced, while Jesse's struggle with morality and addiction adds layers to his character. The narrative's meticulous foreshadowing, culminating in the tragic plane crash, showcases Vince Gilligan’s brilliant storytelling. This season not only builds suspense but also explores the consequences of choices, making it a compelling watch from start to finish.

thanks for the much needed attention and love for season 2! The closest thing I have to an objection to season 2 is one that is entirely the result of production issues I'm well aware of- the first two episodes feel like they should have been the finale to season 1 (which, meanwhile, is both the shortest season and the only one that doesn't end particularly climactically), and feel like mostly they belonged to its arc more than to season 2's. Flow would be so smooth if they'd been back there and the first plane flashforward was simply moved accordingly. Beyond that, it's a spectacular and critical step in the series and you pretty much nailed everything about it.

I got emotional watching this. You have a particular talent for conveying the spectrum of feelings one has when seeing these series for the first time. The music, the choice of clips, the narration. Keep doing what you're good at, you deserve way more subscribers.

Great video, couldn't have said it better myself. I know this is kind of a hot take, but other than Season 5, this second season is my favorite in Breaking Bad's entire run. To me, this season evokes the same feeling one gets whenever they start hearing thunder before the beginning of a bad storm. It's like I can feel the distant rumblings of something destructive coming, as if the characters are all slowly get pulled into a vortex and are trying (though usually failing) to make sense of it. For Hank, his encounters in El Paso and with Tuco leave him with fear and trauma like he'd never felt before. For Jesse, we see his new role in the drug world manifest both his compassion (helping try to save the two junkies' kid) and his need for escapism (e.g. using harder drugs to get high following Combo's death thanks to Jane's enabling). For Jane, the introduction of Jesse into her life ends up surfacing her addiction and her greed (i.e. through blackmailing Walt), and it ends up bringing about her destruction in the end. Even for Jane's dad, a relatively minor character, we see his determined struggle to help his daughter live a better life thrown away in an instant, and in his grief he inadvertently causes immense amounts of destruction with the plane crash. All the characters react to the incoming chaos with a range of emotions that feel very visceral and real. Then of course there's Walter White himself. I don't think there's a better showcase of Season 2's themes and tone than there is in "Four Days Out". The episode in particular runs Walt through a gauntlet of emotions the likes of which we'd never seen on the show before. We see his resignation at the seemingly grim results of his cancer screening, his anxiety as he pressures Jesse to go out with him and cook with him all weekend, his joy as he calculates the figures from the yield they make, his fear as he finds himself in a dead RV in the middle of the desert. We experience his desperation as his possible means of survival slowly dwindle, his exhaustion as he begins to succumb to the heat, his immense relief with the success of their makeshift battery, and finally his frantic anger as he finds out his cancer is actually in remission. Walt is a man who needs order and control, and I think it's extremely interesting to see what happens when he is repeatedly denied both and is given no clear way to reassert himself. That's part of why I think he decides to let Jane die at the end of the season. Sure he cares for Jesse's well-being, and sure Jane posed a threat to Walt, but I think deep down he saw letting Jane overdose as a means to finally seize the reins for the first time in this new world that he has entered. Of course, this action isn't free, and it ends up snowballing into the plane crash that literally brings death and destruction to Walter White's doorstep. That, to me, signals the arrival of the storm. Anyways, thanks for the awesome video and for inspiring me to write this long essay lol. You're one of the best essayists on this website. Can't wait for more One Piece videos!

Thanks for giving season 2 some much needed praise! Season 2 is absolutely my favorite season of the show, and I personally think it is the best. I think it’s absolutely the most tightly-written season. Its structure is practically perfect, everything is clearly in place, and it has by far the most interesting section of Walt’s character arc. After season 2 they famously started making up the plot as they went instead of structuring each season as a whole ahead of time, and while they did a fantastic job of doing it, I respect the carefully constructed nature of season 2 more, and kinda wish the rest of the show had been handled in the same manner.

Breaking bad showing the ways our own choices and consequences always going on forever. Maybe the end of the show is that being severed, or maybe better call Saul is.

This was the moment I truly hated Walt and saw him as the real villain of the story. Killing Jane. That was the moment. Purely selfish and evil. Just another cold calculation.

Wandering Flame's ethereal sound perfectly fits the nebulous feeling of S2 and Fly. I also really liked your choice of using Another Ideology in the Better Call Saul video.

Season 2 is a mixed bag for me. It has some of the best episodes of the show, but much like Season 1, it has a lot of slow and dull moments. In all fairness, it was clearly still trying to find its footing, and I believe it finally did with the S2 finale. Also the '737 Down Over ABQ' mystery build up, while a decent shock on first viewing, doesn't really hold up. It felt like a background event that didn't really connect to anything overall in the season or the show. The ending would've still worked without whole 'build up', hell, it would probably be a lot better in terms of surprising us and leaving us in suspense, as well as giving a sense of things taking a dark unexpected turn for the worse. I get its all meant to be poetic, but that shouldn't be the only explanation. It's like reading a boring mystery book just to get to the reveal, and have it not be as good as you anticipated. While the poetic tone may enrich some scenes and details, it doesn't make up for any of its faults.

What an underrated video, this deserves so many more views, and Season 2 really was the turning point for Breaking Bad into becoming thematically much more substantive, setting the foundation for what made the show become so brilliant down the line through its incredible momentum. It's probably the most artistically shot season and conceptually so fascinating, you're completely right about that unique tone and a narrative that reached beyond just logical plot developments to show the absurdist consequentialism of Walt's chilling transformation. You did a fantastic video on 4 Days Out if I recall, and this expands that praise to the season as a whole, and does so wonderfully well! It really was a transition season in so many ways, and feels strangely avant garde in its execution, fleshing out the characters so well. It's a bit superficial of me, but I loved you pointing out how the titles fit the event that eventually occurs at the end, it's a small detail but it's so damn cool, and it shows that Gilligan and co. were willing to be a bit more creative with this season, which is what I think infuses it with its unique feeling!
