I had the enormous pleasure to meet Shane at a small gig in London ages ago. He was the total opposite when you met him in person. He was kind , very down to earth and his sensitivity transpired. Thanks for the beer and the song Shane, I'll never forget that, and above all thanks for the music!!!! . The world has lost not only a great musician a fantastic lyricist and a poet but a wonderful human being too. RIP kind soul. ☘️😥
A bit but not totally wasted..He knew what he was doing and could hold a conversation. In fact, he asked me quite a few questions. First thing he did is invite me for a beer though 😂. . He was, without any doubt, quite clever, very humble, down to earth and very genuine and, amazingly, quite shy too. I am totally sure he talked to me because I didn't behave as a fan.. I am spanish, had only been living in the UK for a couple of years then.and Ididn't have a clue he was so famous in the UK but I remember well I thought he was special. There was something unique, about him... a special kind of sensitivity... . Top bloke indeed!!! Top bloke!
This is gold for hearing/seeing Phil Chevron singing his CLASSIC song “Thousands Are Sailing” which might be the Pogues most poignant song of all. Pure crystal! God bless you and RIP Philip Chevron; too gone, too soon. Love your song, Phil!
LMAO, no, just no. Um, The Cult, Jane's Addiction, King Diamond, Ween, Sound Garden, Suicidal Tendencies, Queensryche, Slayer, Soul Asylum, Alice in Chains, Metallica, Danzig, PRIMUS, Nirvana, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, I could name a hundred others that would make The Pogues an underbilling on any 80's concert ticket.
I compare this concert to the 1985 show in Munich... the degradation in Shane is huge in just six short years. Very sad, but was also fortunate to see them in Chicago after he'd put it back together a bit. Rest on easy, poet. There will never be another one like you.
Alcolism doesn't take that long to destroy you at the age he was at, he's not in his early twenties and also he's on loads of heroin and loads of downers from doctors and suffering from mental health. It's disgusting he was put on stage to be a freak show
All these comments about Shane and the band being pissed @him. Yes he was let go from the band but you know they loved him as a brother. Speaking from experience its hard as hell to watch your brother kill himself slowly in front of the world. Maybe they were using tough love on top if being angry. Ot would be gut wrenching to have been in this situation. My love to all and God bless Shane McGowan 💕
They relieved him of his duties because he wanted out. He was so tired and over it. He needed a break and he got it. The drink was self medication and he needed to regroup and did. But his glory days were over. So heartbreaking but I’m glad that his legend will never die! RIP Shane! ❤️❤️
Well, Shane may have started becoming a caricature of himself by this gig, but look how far the band wern't without him and his songwriting...... Flawed genius, but genius none the same.
Did anyone else pull this up after reading James' book "Here Comes Everybody"? The last pages talk about this very show. They had already informed Shane that he was gone. And they were all essentially mourning him from the stage. And you could see how bad he had gotten. Especially on "Sally MacLennane".
The band thought they were better of without him, but realized they robbed the band of their sole. It is amazing Shane had although he was in this state had some moderate succes with The Popes, while The Pogues had to dissolve themselves. I am very glad though they found their way to each other after a long time and they performed once again with their old numbers for more than 10 years.
Damn it makes me so sad to see (and hear) Shane at this concert...damn alcohol...love how the other guys support him...I love their music...Shane was so amazing and I'm so sad about Shane's death... R.I.P.♡Shane...you will never be forgotten🖤
+Adam ꦸ Sorry but beg to differ, anyone who can write the songs Shane did is a genius. Very few could rival him when sober, never mind drunk. He was obviously troubled but a lot of exceptionally gifted are. There will never be another Shane mores the pity.
@@bsilva2146 I suppose how can you know? you can only judge it on the small amount of bands out there that youve never heard, not to mention the millions of people who have never tried, Maybe not a genius but definately iconic..... I do think townes van zandt was a genius though. but i am an idiot
You can find great musicians anywhere but not distinct voices. That was the problem here. Anyone can sing the songs. But without Shane, they didn’t have an identity.
hey - with you! i can still do better than most in my work but i'm going down slow. better nobody tolerates me. and tells me "go fxxk" so i might straighten up.
Hate to say this but without Shane Pogues meant nothing, his mere presence even in an inebriated state was enough to send those present into delirium. A real Idol.
Fuck them...he was the one people wanted to see and hear not the band.In so many videos one see's them doing stupid shit just to get attention.... most of them are guilty...R.I.P Shane...you are a legend 🍻👍🙏❤️😊
@@indelible14uscrew them????!!! Dude these people paid hard earned money to see them and Shane was horrible in this performance. You can't have the pogues without the band, they were on top of their game, Shane was so drunk he didn't know his own lyrics. He was wasted. If this was just Shane by himself it would be the most embarrassing thing you've ever seen. You have a very ignorant opinion.
It’s sad, but his aunt taught him very early with dopamine hits to entertain and be manipulated, being drunk and reward was instinsically linked.she was a bit abusive to my way of thinking.
Two-bit celebrities like Bob Dylan, Sinead O'Connor, Johnny Depp and Bono spent many years basically praising MacGowan to the skies and basically not lifting a white-gloved finger to help MacGowan get into REHAB. The band was put in a position of being betrayed by his off-stage antics and had no choice but to fire the guy, but next time you see hilarious brown-nosings of various celebrities blowing smoke up MacGowan's arse, just remember that it was only O'Connor who attempted to help him, and in the end it turned out to be more or a less a garbage publicity stunt.
Sinead did do a lot to try to help him. At one point, she went ahead and narc'd on him for having heroin and got him arrested, hoping that experience would jolt him to get help. It didn't do anything. That being said, Victoria Clark (Shane's wife) has been posting some pictures of him on her instagram lately and he does seem to be doing better as of late.
Read James fearnley's book about the Pogues, they'd just fired Shane in their hotel room before this gig as he was constantly letting them down and was too drunk to perform at gigs. it's a sad story of excess and where it can take you. As professional musicians Shane was threatening their livelihoods so they took the decision to let him go.
If you read Shane's account you'll see there are two sides to the story of their/his downfall, with neither side particularly in the right or the wrong. He wanted and desperately needed a break from touring but wasn't allowed at it made him isolate himself and become very very ill, leading to sad stuff like this.
And of course he wrote the songs............so sad on all sides, but we are very lucky to have the body of work they left behind. So let's celebrate that. Matchless !
Dave I remember when they fired him. I was all done with The Pogues after that even though they attempted (one album?) without him. No Shane..No Pogues for me. Maybe they felt they had to do it but attempting to go on without him was lame. At least they did the reunions with Shane.
@@TheKieran182 He was an alcoholic and a drug addict, and nobody helped him get into rehab, the band's manager and the crew/band more or less enabled the guy and it wasn't until he stopped showing up to gigs that they were forced to officially fire him. Hard to have sympathy for the guy when common sense wasn't really in his DNA
Phil Chevron: Thank you for writing that modern classic song about the Hibernian Diaspora, “Thousands Are Sailing”. Sheer brilliance. Destined to be a classic song in the Irish Diaspora canon; IMHO.
Taking in to consideration how tired and emotionally, physically wasted, I can’t believe Shane tried to show up for the job. Bless. Love you Shane! Sorry to the band.
I don't know what it'd take to be 1/3rd OK and 2/3rds inaudible slurring like this but I mean even for Shane this is pretty dire but hey I would have loved to see it live! He just looks FRAZZLED.
Thanks for sharing,, I'm a huge fan, seen them live many times, but only ever saw a few songs from this concert! :) Great treat to finally see the whole show all these years later. God bless you from Davey, Ireland :)
awesome? do you speak american? shane was on the way out - watch carefully. like most greats his greatness was short-lived. greatest guitarist duane allman 24. riedel [poland] greatest blues singer of his time, stuck needles in his arm and died young. "awesome"? you just follow the rest! shane would never talk like that even his brain is shot.
This was a long night for Shane, and thankfully his first and last bad performance. I never saw him miss a beat after this. I think his firing after this night from the pogues and the pogues reunion later in the 90s only helped to strengthen their bond. They are all legends. RIP Shane you legend. RIP Phil.
In Shane's defense, he probably could have hung in there a little better if Andrew Ranken (the drummer) wasn't in the mood to go so fast. That being said, firing him was most likely the right decision.
And in further defense, if you had been fired right before having to perform at your job, wouldn't you perform like shite? I mean, sure, yes, he is very drunk, but I'm sure he was sad and confused too.
It’s so funny. It’s such a great show but they are ALL pissed-off at him. 😂 They’re probably playing that fast (while very cool) in order to end the show quicker. This actually rocks though. Lol. ☘️ 😎 🤘🏼
I can see the rest of the band are a little bothered and keeping an eye on Shane. Ireland's answer to Ozzie Osbourne who se also been on stage in some terrible states. At Least Shane didn t chuck buckets of water over the audience. Haha look at the credits coming up in Japanese x
Thing is too, when he got fired and they got Joe Strummer, like who cared? I went to a club and saw Shane with the Popes and they did plenty of Pogues tunes. I even sold an extra ticket to some dude outside just hoping. Like, have to admit it. Shane was the draw. And he was punk. Ill but punk all the same.
I was at that show, too! Had just moved to London from Dublin, and the tube station I needed to get home was closed down due to a fire. I got lost getting home, but the concert was worth it!
Disgusting that the other members of the band who shane made keot him touring and the management. He was never the same after this tour. His sister git him sectioned not long after
Some songs are a LOT better performed than others but I love this concert it's.... different lol. For Shane to be this wrecked takes a f*cking lot lol but hey man last show of an era of the original bar the bassist change prior recording the 2nd album (was it?) and it's good and Shane's funny lol.
I feel like his slurring was real bad there, and all the members kind of turn their attention towards it realizing Shane was too wrecked. He quickly got it back together a few moments later. Either way I love Shane so much! He's 59 today and survived 2016's hit list! Sickbed of Cuchulainn is my fav part of the show
Pogues FULL BLAST i say - Let's make Happy thro Pandemics & World Wars - PS i remember when they 1st arrived on the music scene - i was about 26yrs old
Hey, das ist doch bott !? Meinen vorherigen K. hast "du" vollkommen ignoriert ? ! Macht ja auch nix icefuck ! ....tut den Jungs (pogues) keinen Schaden an !
The opposte of when he was on stage. He was a bit shy in person. That surprised me. He was also very humble and down to earth. What a wonderful person and what a huge loss!!! As you can imagine, It was an enormous pleasure meeting him!It was over 30 years ago but I can remember it as if it was yesterday. 👍
