Possibly inappropriate, but one of his sons died by falling off a cliff when on drugs about 200 metres down the road from where one of my best friends used to live, near Brighton. That friend now lives with my best friend, who tattooed Jethro Cave's finger years ago, who was a fan of my friend's noise band at the time, and demanded he do this bad tattoo for him at the time that they met, so he did. Then yh, he died last year as well. It's pretty weird and crazy.
Nick was the perfect person to sing this song at Shane's funeral. He gave of himself with tremendous feeling and soulfulness and yet has the artistic temperament and understanding not to fall into sentimentality. A beautiful and moving rendition.
Fab Nick. I watched this as a mark of respect for Shane when he passed. I then started watching some previous clips. I missed Shane's genius when he was alive but it seems very obvious now. He was brilliant as a writer and musically but what I love most is the authentiticy, he was himself and he was loved for it. And we are proud of him. 💙💙💙🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
Thanks I know Nick is an Australian I’m a fan. Thanks for pointing that out I can see how my comment reads. I am saying Love to the Irish, from me, an Englishman.
Best version of Rainy Night in Soho you could hear the tears and emotion in Nick's voice as he just kept it together so powerful fitting send off Soul mates that will see oneanother again
I see Nick a few times last years. I saw I'm twice after his son death (the last of them after 2 of his sons have died) He always seems to crack but I don't know how he makes it through. Because you hear the sorrow and the pain. A true homage to a true friends
I'm Portuguese, but love Ireland and its traditions and you love Shane, punk, rock, country, folk he didn't care only us,the ones who like to judge and categorized everything and further up the road we realize were wrong, because fashion is a product and someone from nowhere can bring it all up with only his humbleness and respect for his origins ,the ones he believe and that his the greatest power of all.
Beautiful rendition. May the road rise to meet you Shane. May the sun shine bright on your face, may the rain fall gently on your fields and may God hold you in the hallow of his hand. Rest easy
I cry....as french i saw a concert of the pogues in 1998....it was crasy with the guiness 'biere'...the 'ambiance' was crasy!!!!! RIP my friend....!!!! Bravo Nick...!!!
My God. I watched this whole service now and I don’t think I have ever been more moved at the music and more in awe of the musicians. What is the word I am looking for? Would glorious be fitting enough? What a celebration for such a life!
I know! We didn't intend watching all of it, but it was like the best concert ever, and I felt so guilty thinking that because it was a funeral. Totally, a celebration of life
@@lynpops6526 a funeral for a musician whose closest friends are also musicians, it’s pretty fitting. Not to mention the fact that music and lyrics to songs can express feelings and emotions far better than just spoken words. So it all goes together.
Stunning tribute. Watching live, it initially seemed too slow/ different compared to the original version but in fact the slowed down version was genius for a funeral as was the omission of the ‘ginger lady’ verse and the changing of the lyrics / finality of the song being ‘over’. Such a difficult performance for a man whose young son literally ‘fell’ into heaven. Colm Mac Con Iomaire on the violin was superb and wonderfully understated and very reverent. World class performace
A stunning performance from Nick Cave....a wonderful tribute to Shane McGowan, the bohemian bard of Ireland 🇮🇪, also very much part of London Town 🇬🇧...a Brendan Behan, Dylan Thomas, a Jim Morrison, now free of his ravaged frame, gone to wherever souls go when they are set free ❤
Shane gave a voice to the down and out and dispossessed. Back in the 80’s I was that down and out young man and this song gave voice to love unseen , holding hands in the rain with a pocket full of coins. Enough for a bottle to share.
Nick Cave is such a General here, guarding each and every moment against a potential moment of weakness. With several fills actually doing this by necessity. Meanwhile performing an absolutely masterful take on his friend’s great song with musicians he’s never worked with before. Everyone did very very well here in extremely trying circumstances. Bravo and thanks so much for this moment.
I love coming back to read people's comments some lovely tributes. Was totally unaware that Nick lost his two sons. I've two sons also can't begin to imagine the weight of his cross. Between loosing one of his best friends and his own boys that might explain how heartfelt his delivery is here. I'll be saying a wee prayer for Shane and Nick.
Love how hes changed the original "Now the song is nearly over, we may never find out what it means" to "Now the song is over, we will never find out what it means
This really was the stand out performance for me and there were many!. Shane's very best work and Nick really captured the mood of the moment perfectly. Shane's version was played at Mum's funeral last January. She ADORED Shane. R.I.P to them both and thanks Nick for your artistic genius as always ❤
Still crying, so moving and when Nick changed the lyrics at the end of the song, my God ! Thank you Nick Cave, you're such a beautiful artist. Love forever Shane ❤ Your star will forever shine.
@@Io-Io-Io yes ,Shane drank ,he drank enough for 10 men but he was always himself, did it stop him being the lyrical genius he was ,no I don't think so ,let him without vice an all that ,R.I.P Shane wished I'd got to have a pint with ya
You guys did such justice to Shane’s music at this tribute ! Awesome ! Irish are my peeps!! Grew up amongst the Irish on 122st in ManhattAn in the 60’s through 70’s, and had a blast of a coming of age. Thank you Shane for all the music . You were loved ❤RIP
I love the way he phrases this more like Shane used to do having heard them sing it together in the past. He's channeling the guy. Possibly writing songs like this is our highest achievement as a species. Can't even express my gratitude to Shane MacGowan for this song. When you hear someone turning human lives into such poetry it's humbling. More of this kind of thing and less of the hatred and fear right here would be good. His fearless spirit must continue to inspire us never to settle for second best. In anything.
Exactly...the way Nick phrased this beautiful song...is unlike any performance of A Rainy night in Soho....ever. A miraculous event it was like Shane was sitting next to him...directing the entire performance. Even the subtle nod encouraging the violinist to continue with that beautiful solo...
We never know what the song means, but we know how it makes us feel, and that's all that ever matters. Bless Shane, and Sinead, and all the artists who shakes us up inside with their anger, beauty, dreams, and madnesses.
Thanks Nick...a powerful tribute to a poet who is now a legend leaving behind a catalogue of music for us all to share and ponder on, lyrics that make you want to fight, love, drink, laugh and cry...RIP Shane...what a party you will be having with Sinead and Delores all gone too soon.
A send off fit for the genius that Shane was. What a legacy he has left. What a gift to blessed with, to write such wonderful songs. Generations not even born yet, will know and love his songs. Rest in peace Shane 🙏 x
Everyone needs a friend like you, Nick Cave. Condolences on the loss of your friend, Mr Cave. I cried with you, Nick! And I cried and cried. I love you, Nick Cave! Be in light and peace, Shane, I love you and will miss you in this world, and thank you for your art.
What a wonderful rendition by Mr. Cave. Shane's passing rips my heart out as his music was such a huge part of my life as a young lad. Another person gone from my life, another step in the ladder broken. Feeling sad right now. Peace ya'll.
Iv never heard this song before but since I first saw it at Shane’s funeral, I have watched it over and over again , an absolute masterpiece. All credit to Nick , wonderful 💚
A little poem for thee... Now, it's over No more clover You'll see. On the seven seas You travel now, your last Odyssey, For eternity On the Irish Rover, On road, say hello to Luke, Ronnie... And the many. Thank you for all ❤
That was so touching. You could listen to that song over and over again as it’s so beautiful. That is Shane’s best song in my opinion. Nick gave it everything and you can tell how much Shane meant to him the way he’s put every ounce of emotion into it. The musicians were outstanding also in particular Colm on the violin. Has to be the most amazing funeral I’ve ever seen. Shane got the best send off he could ever wish for❤️
Beautifully said, but I have to believe that he DID love it. I have to believe that talent like his lives on somewhere, somehow rather than just vanish. Illogical, but I'll believe it nonetheless.
The violinist was superb. What a send off for Shane who invented the the best Christmas song ever. R.I.P no more sorrows or woes. You are singing with the angels in heaven now. God bless Shane Mc Gowan.
This old song is so real. It is like sitting with my cousins at the cottage singing with their kids and now their Grandkids. That is my dream in life. Who will be there in my safe place? New young children are showing up in dreams. All we need is nature and music to come back to those happy places. My Gramma is there too, Grampa, and Uncles and Aunts!
