International business people mostly come to China for profits, opportunities and an exotic experience. But one of them wanted to discover more. A British investor has not only learnt the Chinese language well, but grasped the skill to translate ancient Chinese poems into English. What's his story? And what can he share with us after publishing three books on China?
Guest: Tim Clissold, British investor & author of "Cloud Chamber"

Thank you for showing us such an incredibly touching and profoundly engrossing conversation! The ease with which Xin helps weave their way through this thoughtful dialogue and the beautiful beautiful response that Tim generates are such that I was, at multiple points in the interview, moved to tears! This video has really reconnected me with my cultural, poetical, and spiritual root-- something that we all need to look back to, especially in this day and age!

I am reading an anthology of Chinese poetry in translation and am very very impressed by its beauty, which comes through even in translation. Also what impressed me is the interweaving of human emotions and the natural world

As a child learning Chinese and English, when I saw a new word, I was often able to guess its meaning from the context where the word was located. In English, I could at least pronounce it since English is alphabetical phonetical and is written as it is pronounced. By the same token, I was disappointed that I could not pronounce a new Chinese word. Little did I know that years later, my disappointment turned into delight when I discovered that I could largely understand ancient written Chinese passages. Alas, my delight with English writing turned into disappointment when I discovered that I could not read Old English. As a non-linguist, my layman hypothesis is that pronunciation evolves faster than writing over time and isolation and the spelling will eventually catch up to reflect the pronunciation. By being non alphabetical, ideograms were immune from this evolutionary pressure to catch up with the pronunciation. In both delight and gratitude, I can today recognise fossil ideograms and decipher the wealth of multidisciplinary information and wisdom that my ancient ancestors left me as my heritage, in the form of poetry, for instance.

Chinese language is a lied hence Mandarin aka Sino-Tibetan language belong to ethnic Di-Qiang and Tibetan not the vast majority of the Chinese peoples that speak a varieties of Chinese dialects. Chinese peoples, culture, traditions, etc is also lied hence there's no such thing as ethnic Han Chinese or ethnic Chinese peoples either according to hundreds of DNA test results.

Were Tim Clissold wishing to read and write this beautiful language today, he could access online the Mandarin Blueprint Method and have it mastered in no time at all! It’s been a lifelong goal for me to be able to decode these stunning characters and thanks to this course I can easily remember and write each character. My new goal will be to read his translations of ancient Chinese poetry. Thank you for featuring his work.

Hi elaineg60. Yes, I was in the British Museum and like Mr. Clissold said, I could read the text and scrolls on display from the Tang Dynasty as the characters had not changed in such a long time. It is quite profound and surreal that connections can be made to history merely by the characters. Hope this comment will find you in the best of health and active again.

Aside from our shallow differences, we, as humans, are ultimately the same. As in, the fundamental characteristics of humanity remain the same. Curiosity, self-preservation, desire, and security. Even if we differ in culture, language, customs, and beliefs. I believe in cultural exchange, diplomacy, civility, compassion, cooperation, communication, and putting aside our differences. Situations arise where things won't go smoothly, but promoting this universally applicable form of education is key to avoiding unnecessary conflict.

Many years ago I read about an English academic who was so intrigued by the Chinese language that he picked it up and went to communist China to translate a book. He was so fascinated that he translated other works and his planned short spell in China just became forgotten. He never went back to England and died in China. Anybody has any idea what's his name?

The number of Chinese languages users will eventually surpass that of English speakers. It will be expedited by the Belt and Road Initiative. So learn Chinese or be left out.
