I'm always amazed at how the human race comes up with ways of cooking or eating poisonous foods. How many people have died to work out how long you need to soak these before you can cook and eat them safely? I think I would have given up on them quite quickly after one person died.

I guess if it's starvation or the chance of death, you'd take the risk.

Makes me think of Almonds actually.

Or possibly spat it out. Cyanide has a fairly distinct flavour as far as I know. Bitter almonds are very rich in it and they are vile on their own.

Thank you. 5:40 was so funny! I am in the far western edge of Appalachia, Bluegrass area of Kentucky USA. We can not get half of those ingredients, but I loved the video. God Bless and stay safe.

You're brilliant, I love your recipes. Being Dutch I happily admit the fact that the Indonesian cuisine is the best part of Dutch cooking ;o)

Then you should try making «brongkos», a traditional Indonesian cuisine originally from Yogyakarta, addictively good from the taste of keluwak. 😋😋😋

if it tastes like soy sauce why not use that instead ?
@thomasneal9291

exactly, I cannot fathom why this is worth bothering with. maybe if those nuts were the only ingredients you had... maybe.

Because they absolutely do not (taste like soy sauce); I don't know why he makes that comparison. The taste of buah keluak is quite unique and it's been fairly compared to truffles or black olives or wine; but soy sauce is just a bizarre point of comparison to make.
