From Hebron, two women talk about the tensions of living in a divided city.

Ruth Hizmi, one of 400 Jewish settlers, moved to the West Bank 9 years ago. She believes that just being in her kitchen in Hebron is an act of faith. But on her way to work she gets spat on by Arab neighbours. Afifeh, a young Palestinian woman, lives on the 'cease-fire line' between the Jews and 100,000 Palestinians. From her cobbled wall, she overlooks a brand new playground built for Jewish children. Conflict in Hebron begins with the ancient Tomb of the Patriarchs. As the burial Place of Abraham, it holds great religious significance for both Jews and Muslims. Two years ago, a Jewish settler, Baruch Goldstein fired 119 bullets into a crowd of praying Muslims. Ever since worship for both religions has been strictly regulated by tense Israeli soldiers. Noam Arnon, spokesperson for the Jewish community, denounces recent Palestinian elections. He takes politicians to the street where there have been attacks on Jewish settlers. Ruth wants peace but she is passionately opposed to moving out of Hebron. Afifeh is simply resigned to the hard fact that Jews and Muslims can never live together in peace.

Incorrect: Hebron is not the second holiest site to the Musims after Jerusalem. Mecca is the holiest place to muslims, and Jerusalem is not mentioned in the Kuran. Hebron was purchased by Abraham and is the earliest known real estate transaction in history. Thousands of years later Muhammed wrote a "deed" to the land claiming it belongs to a muslim family in Hebron.

I don't think the Hebron settler woman knows the definition of the word "peace"...Peace does not mean opening fire on worshippers. Peace does not mean the military occupation. Peace does not mean supporting extremist right wing elements in your camp. Supporters of Israel blame Palestinians for disrupting the peace process. Just listen to these settlers. Look at the guns they carry. Look at the protection they receive. Then ask yourself, who's the terrorist?

@FriendlyPakistani In Israel Arabs live in cities that are primarily Jewish with freedom to worship as they please. How many Jews are permitted to live in Saudi or even Pakistan with that kind of freedom. There are even Arab Muslims who have joined the Israeli army because they know that they have more freedom in Israel than any Muslim country.

No such thing as 'palestinian". Palestine is a region given name by the Romans. In 1920 the Jews had already prospering the land since the 1880s. These so called palestinians, where and are ARABS. They came from Yemen. Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, and far away from Russia caucuses mountain regions for a better life in Israel. The term "palestianian" is political term. Since the Jews stop using it after 1948 Independence. Arafat use it to get world sympathies after the fail and another lost war by the arab armies in 1967. There are NO two nations, only one. Which is ISRAEL.

In time 4:04, the narrator goes by saying that "..but to both, it's (the temple/mosque of Abraham) the second holiest site after Jerusalem..". Journeyman Pictures has got the wrong facts. The holiest site(s) for the Muslims are Mecca and Medina, not Jerusalem. Only the Jews and Christians reverred Jerusalem as the holiest site on earth. But between the Jews and Christians, the Jews reverred Jerusalem more, because the Christians believe that the holiest of holy is not made by human hands.

I think this documantary was mostly evenhanded but it was made in 1996 and needs to be updated. Since that time there have been 2 intifadahs. The Arabs destroyed the Jewish synagog and yeshiva at the tomb of the patriarchs. Much more has gone on.

Jews didnt leave Hebron even after the massacre.....we were forced out by the British authorities for our own safety ie they didnt want to enforce the laws of the land and protect the Jewish residents of Hebron.

@whitegardenia45 It is not a violation of international law for Jews to live on the West Bank of the Jordan River the Jews have the only internationally recognized claim to sovereignty west of the Jordan under international law since 1922. Therefore article 49 of the UN charter does not apply and Article 80 does apply. Hebron technically is in Judea it is the historical land of the Jews and the indigenous tribe has a right to reclaim its land under international treaty law.

too bad this doesn't show the amazing jewish archeaological history in hebron. most of the buildings that haven't been vandalized have ancient mezzuzah and jewish markings in the stone. just outside of hebron is the burial place of the jewish forefathers a major holy site for the jews. such a shame that archaeology and history are ignored today in the name of politics.

Machpelah in Hebron is the oldest piece of Jewish real estate. Abraham paid an outrageously high price for it as a tomb for his wife, later him, Isaac, Rivka, and Jacob (Israel) and Leah. It's recorded in the Bible in the book of Genesis, specifically to counter any claim that this land does not belong to the Jews. Muslims have Mecca, and no-one is stopping them from also being in Hebron, home of a Jewish community for 1000s of years. Why are Jews back in their homeland such a threat?!!

If you ever needed a good example of how completely pointless religion is and how it causes entirely unnecessary problems, then this video shows it. If the vast majority of the population simply weren't believing in magic fairies like deluded little children and instead just held the beliefs of rational human beings then this wouldn't even be a problem. Instead of fighting over holy places, people would think "tomb of Abraham? Who cares? Isn't interesting that both Jews and Muslims believe in one "God" and the prophets are human and not divine. They are more alike than they care to think. The settlers are not an obstacle to peace unless one defines "peace" as Arab colonialism set free and not resisted. This is not Arab or Islamic land, but rather belongs to whomever G-d has chosen to have live. The Koran knows this and Jewish commentator on the Torah also knew this. Only the Islamic infidels say that the Koran was not correct. Or the Jewish apikorisim and how the Torah sees who should live in a place.. The apostates. I see this as a problem with Arab colonialism and not Greater Israel, but more a problem with Greater Islam which insists on pushing out into areas where people not Muslims live. The film says misleadingly that Israel ensures BOTH sides can pray here, but with 400 settlers and 200,000 Palestinians that means the army is protecting an apartheid system in which the majority is ruled by a majority. Jews were kicked out from Habron by the jordanians, Israel didn't kick out the arabs in 1967. Israel decided to divide the city but both sides attack each other, that's why the IDF has to protect the jews and the PA police must protect the arabs

yofi: Actually, your example using Mexico and Texas is very flawed: Texas was stolen from Mexico after settlers from the States who had gotten into Mexico, declared independence, and after taking the land from Mexico with the help of the States, the settlers asked to be part of the States. It has nothing to do with the creation of Israel at the expense of the Palestinians, many of whom are descendants of old Jews(Hebrews )converted to Islam, and had no part in the Diaspora.
