The police box is best known to the world through its use as the external shell of the time-travelling, space-travelling Tardis, of the science-fiction television series, Doctor Who. In this video, we will take a cursory look at the props, and their design, of the classic era (1963-1989).

I know it’s really inaccurate to the real thing, but I really like the Newberry prop. I can just imagine the Doctor trying to compute the accurate dimensions for the box into the TARDIS console and just going “shit” over and over again when he gets it wrong.

The funny thing about creating these models is that I've become fond of the boxes I initially didn't like.

Thank you so much for making this series. I knew the TARDIS had changed over the years, but never knew how much so.

It's amazing that the Brachacki prop lasted as long as it did. It looks absolutely knackered in spearhead in space and it still had another 6 years of use after that

It's always been my favourite.

One of the three TYJ boxes that were built still survives to this day.

Thanks for the video. The Yardley-Jones box was my favourite classic era box.

I always preferred the pastel-blue signage on the deep-blue of the latter-Davison version of Yardley-Jones’ box.

Even the pilot box and televised box were different.

I have to say you have a very soothing way of talking. Your ever nice to listen to.

Note that the Newberry box doesn’t actually have a rear wall, rather a simple black curtain. The Brachacki box also has rear doors in both iterations.

Brilliant video!

The 1979 box went through a period of having a (ridiculous) rotating blue police lamp on it. I was interested to learn in your earlier video that real police boxes had red lights, and I think they should have that on a TARDIS one day. ☺️🚨

I think i read somewhere it was something to do that being shot in B/W it wouldn't show up as red anyway and a white light would stand out more

one thing you left out and one of my favorite TARDIS unique changes made to the Brchacki box near the end of its time is the change to black on white signs above the doors I wouldn't have pointed this out but as I said it is one of my favorite variations of the design and something I'd actually like to see come back in Doctor Who down the road

There were quite a few modifications made to the Brachacki box over the 13 years it was used, and I chose the appearance I liked best to represent it. It might be fun to produce a video devoted to all the modified versions (even the one with the telephone hatch handle to the left, a la McGann's box). Maybe I will one day.

I really like the big forehead and tall corner posts of the brachacki box, gives it a more tall, broad shape that the normal stacked roofs later boxes dont have. I actually dislike the newer boxes because the same stacked roof design has barely changed in recent years and seems to have become a default of tardis design, they all look too similar to eachother. The Brachacki box is my favorite design for the tardis overall.

I agree with original box in its original form being the best ,in my opinion in classic and New Who , I just wish the day would come they faithfully copy a real metropolitan police box, including the blue windows in the middle bottom row and perhaps a red light like the real thing, would be different..

I could have swore the 1st Doctor's TARDIS had the St John logo on the door... Hmmmm

I think they're referring to the model in this vid, it represents the box in its original form but has no St johns logo

It did, but I deliberately left it out for the reasons I give in the second video of this little trilogy. Basically, I'm insuring myself against any copyright issues that might arise, although I do show the Cushing box (briefly) with it - which admittedly contradicts what I just typed.

That annoying, constant fade in and out materialisation is extremely irritating and inaccurate.

your model of the altered box scares me. the posts remained the same size, one the front and back it went in under the roof and on the sides there were pieces that went out (and as TARDIS Man said near the bottom of the comments, your models do need a bit of work
