Heh heh heh. As soon as I saw this come up I knew you’d be grinning as you listened to Stewart Copeland’s phenomenal drum track. It’s a masterclass in how you can take a potentially straightforward rock song and completely reinvigorate it with a ton of creative possibilities. It never gets in the way of the rest of the song due to clever mixing and production plus he drives the song with his right foot pumping away. It’s so good that I knew you wouldn’t be able to focus on two of the other worthy elements. Firstly, the lyrics are worth you revisiting. It’s about people in big cities being lonely and feeling like they’re castaways on an island lost at sea. It’s a song about isolation. The other is Andy Summer’s guitar work. The main riff is fantastic in terms of concept, tone, and execution. Then his little snippets of solo licks that are thrown in. Also worthy mentions are Sting’s bass and his vocal delivery. An all round top class song, and one that’s fun as heck to do a cover of with your band. Now, all that being said, your next Police song has to be Walking On The Moon. As a drummer, you’ll be grinning for days. You’ve been warned.

The Police became globally popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were part of the British new wave scene & they played a style of rock influenced by punk, reggae & jazz. They have had a lot of hits such as "Roxanne", "Can't Stand Losing You", "Message In A Bottle", "Walking On The Moon", "Don't Stand So Close to Me", "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" & "Every Breath You Take" etc. Sting went on to have a big solo career.

Nice breakdown. And to add to it, the others did really well too, but they were less focused on visible mainstream pursuits and more on ones that were equally artistically valid, just less of a big deal in pop culture, like the soundtracks for films that no one knows they wrote. The stuff Summers did with Robert Fripp was awesome, and Copeland's work in film has been impressive.

"Bed's Too Big Without You" (Mono Version) is a bit forgotten gem. They originally did it for the album "Reggatta De Blanc". However they re-arranged it for a boxed singles printed on blue vinyl and mixed it to mono. From the drumming point of view, there's quite a lot of going on in it. Please react !

Yep. Full Police albums are great. If you start with early ones (which I’d recommend) just do so remembering that they became famous during the punk era, so they have a rawness and energy that sometimes takes the polish off their production that you might expect. They were sophisticated players and people who were savvy enough to know they had to be themselves but they had to also not completely reject the appetites of the youth of their era. Once they established themselves they were able to have creative freedom, but you’ll hear a raw edge early on. Joe Jackson was another artist who did the same. Sophisticated stuff in a punk getup.

Another UK 3-piece band, around at the same time, was The Jam. They had a ton of hits in the UK, Europe, & further afield, but didn't seem to connect with the USA audience. Like The Police, they were all insanely talented on their respective instruments. Paul Weller on lead guitar & lead vocals, Bruce Foxton on that heavy bass, & Rick Buckler on drums, my favourite being Buckler on drums. His work on their song Funeral Pyre has, IMHO, never been bettered!! Check it out, see what you think! 😁 *Trivia corner! When they formed The Jam, Weller was a bass-player, & Foxton was a lead guitarist, but they switched!! 😮

Took me a few albums into their career (basically Ghost In the Machine and Synchronicity) before I really appreciated The Police, too. By then there was a bit more sophistication in their writing and production and it caught my ear better. Then I went back and discovered nuance that I hadn't noticed before just by radio. I got to meet Copeland but didn't realize it was him. What a lost opportunity. He didn't look like he did in drumming magazines. He writes some really clever drum work that too often goes unnoticed. There are some super inventive ideas used in this. As a drummer it's nice to see you covering a band with players this good. There are a lot of popular bands with really good bass players, or really good drummers, or really good guitar players. But then there are bands built around the players *all* being genius perfectionists, so they're all amazing all the time. And The Police is one of those bands where everyone was a very serious musician in addition to being in a popular band. Thanks for covering them.
@TheDivayenta
@TheDivayenta 2 года назад
What did he look like?
@s.mcpherson6354
@s.mcpherson6354 2 года назад
@@TheDivayenta Part of it was it was a film festival and he wasn't given any special introduction, just that he was a friend of the person I was talking to, so I had no reason to think of him in those terms. And we were surrounded by movie stars, and there was someone speaking at a podium, so even his attention was often on that, as mine was. A lot of how the brain recognizes people is contextual, so we can often see work people we know well, but in strange locations in casual clothes, and it can take our brain a bit to 'place' them. And even though I drum, it's not like he's some well known celebrity to me. I'd know his kit better than him. The biggest difference was his complexion, and he was thinner than I expected. It wasn't until he went up to sit in with the band that I realized who it was when they introduced him. Had I known who it was, I would have asked some drumming questions if he'd have been okay with that. But I think it says really good things about him that I couldn't tell that he was one of the most talented and likely wealthy people in the room.
