This is Episode 1 of our 10-episode Poor Man’s Hangar Tour series. This Series highlights the evolution of the MAJOR radial aircraft engines and the most common aircraft each powered. This Episode 1 starts with the late-1920s emergence of what would become the 600 horsepower Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp and its little brother, the 450 horsepower R-985 Wasp Junior. We then describe and present footage of the most common aircraft they powered--the North American AT-6 Texan (R-1340) and the Beechcraft Model 18 (R-985). Planned subsequent episodes will move up the evolutionary ladder of power up to the 3,800 horsepower, 28-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major that powered the Douglas C-124C Globemaster II and the Convair B-36J Peacemaker strategic bomber that were both dominant in the 1950s.

Truly outstanding and interesting account of the evolution air-cooled radial engine aircraft emerging from the 1920s. This is a must-see Episode 1 video of these historical engines and aircraft.

Thanks for your endorsement! The take away Is that the 1920s engines earned their keep and were prominent until around year 2000 and are still going strong with collectors and airshows today.

Have enjoyed many of your videos to date but this one is particularly informative. As a long retired P&W employee, I liked your presentation and look forward to the future works. I too go to airshows to see and HEAR the aircraft; why the operators of them feel (annoying) music is required is beyond me. Oshkosh is a prime case in point.

Thanks for your nice comment--really appreciated! We are continuing the series by moving up the horsepower chain using the P&W vs. Curtiss-Wright theme, with the next one coming out in a few weeks. I enjoy reaching people like you who worked and were part of those places--and I'm glad you like our channel. Also--you may have noticed that a few of our earlier videos have overbearing music in them but we paid attention to viewer suggestions and stopped using music in our presentations (except for brief introductory segment). The Antonov AN-2 as well as the Shijiazhuang Y-5 still fly in Russia & China on passenger/cargo flights. using a radial engine. Desdigned around the DHC-3 Otter.

Thanks for posting your videos. Please consider reposting your videos using AI software. Your footage is unique and would look great with AI editing. The Lockheed Connie video footage would be a great place to start.

Agreed--been thinking about that! A lot of our footage will be used in future videos and I would like to recondition it with AI. Thanks for checking us out. JA Reed

@@AeroDinosaur ive been trying out the Topaz video software. Unfortunately the processing times can be over one day for just one hour of video. The end result, however, is good.
