Thanks for video! Had the honor to fly the A-1 in 1969-70 with 224 combat missions and close to 900hrs total. Was one great bird!

Lostcreek 1-thanks for you good comment. I know NKP was a big place--but did you know aviation writer Richard Drury who flew with the Hoboes and Sandy's also in '69-'70? Also, I'm releasing Part 2 later this month (possibly pushed into January) focusing on the A-1 in SEA, particularly NKP. @@AeroDinosaur Knew Rick while at NKP and also we were T-38 instructors in same squadron at Reese AFB after Nam tour. A-1 Skyraider assn. was founded in 72-73 (?) still has bi annual reunions. If virus gives us a break, next one will be in Oct. 2021. When I arrived in NKP July of 69, was assigned to the 602nd "Firefly" Special Ops Squadron. Hobo's, 1st. SOS, and Zoro's 22nd SOS. Don't recall last time I saw Rick, been lots of years, he was a very pleasant fellow and well liked by all.

@@lostcreek163 Yes I've always heard that Rick is a good guy. In 1980 I bought his book My Secret War which inspired me for life. Thirty years ago he was on the editorial staff of Airliners Magazine when they published a feature article I wrote, but I never met him. I think he was flying for Flying Tigers/FedEx then. Airliners also did reviews of my aviation videotapes I had released at the time and their parent company, World Transport Press distributed them to other wholesalers and end users. Another reason I like Drury is that he exercised his kid hobby of building model airplanes throughout his life--just like me.

@@lostcreek163 Yes, I live just north of you in Des Peres. I've been to Potosi many times, one of my big clients there years ago was Purcell Tire. I also went to YMCA Camp Lakewood on Sunnen Lake in 1967 when I was 13. Sunnen Products in Maplewood (whose foundation was the main benefactor of the camp) was also a client of mine for many years. Also, I think Rick Drury is still around. I see no online evidence that he's gone just yet. I agree, it would be good to do something on the piston Convairs. I can do a slideshow presentation but I lack original video which I would prefer to have--would have to buy it from someone else. I've taken very limited still photos while flying on them, but never got any video footage. There are a couple remaining 240/440 cargo operators out of Opa-locka and if they're still going I may try to hitch a ride sometime in 2021. I noticed one of them was still operating a couple of 240 freighters I photographed at Spirit of St. Louis Airport way back in 1987 when they were with Sundance Airlines. Sundance failed before it even got started.

Thanks, the A1 is an amazing aircraft. It's got one engine but is fast, tough, an excellent ground attack aircraft and can carry twice the bomb load of a Mitchel B-25.

I flew two tours in Vietnam,70-71-72. Both tours I flew in an Air Cavalry troop. Air cav troops are somewhat self contained. By that I mean we have our own infantry platoon(Blues), our own maintenance section, and then we have our "Lift section",that is the Huey's, which also carry our infantry(ARPS= Aero Rifle Platoon), Gun platoon=our Cobra Gunships, and our Scout Platoon which we flew treetop level nice and slow to purposely draw fire giving the snakes something to do. I was in the Scout platoon, and my second tour was up on the DMZ,(71-72).As one can imagine, we often,(as in multiple times a day) ran into trouble and the guns rolling in with various rockets and mini gun fire to kill the enemy. But often up there we ran into stuff we didn't have the firepower to deal with so we would call for assistance. Sometimes it would be fast movers, one time we found MORE than enough that the Air Force FAC actually diverted a B52 airstrike heading for north Vietnam, to come our way and drop their loads on the large targets we found. Sounds great, but 99% of the eggs they dropped landed in Laos instead of the target which was right on the northwest corner of the DMZ, on our side. The FAC assigned to us then called for local support and sometimes we had AD's come and bomb the crap out of the targets we found, AND that was super ACCURATE bombing too. But most of the time we got diverted fast movers and they were only okay at destroying the targets. The AD's were THE BEST fixed wing close air support we ever had, and trust me when I say this, whenever you guys came to us, you destroyed first time-every time, and then we would go in and do a BDA and then you guys cleared the AO. So once again, I will thank you AD drivers for your superb close air support, and saving my ass many times. Over.

I wasn't there so I don't deserve any credit--all goes to the real AD drivers who risked their lives for you, as you repeatedly risked yours. I am just a "reporter", safe behind my desktop computer in my office, sipping a cup of coffee. A-1, P-47 and A-10 are all from the same heritage. Heavy, able to carry anything and devastating to the enemy for close air/fire support.

Actually not true... the A-1 and A-10 were built from the onset to be close air support aircraft, hence the prefix "A" for Attack. The P-47 was NEVER conceived as a close air support aircraft. it was built as a high altitude long range escort Pursuit fighter hence the prefix "P" and for which it struggled at early on because of lack of internal and external fuel. That was fixed on the P-47N. Only when the P-51 came online, did the roll of the P-47 switch to close air support, but that was only in Europe. In the Pacific the T-bolt was still a long ranger fighter escorts for B-29s.

I worked on A-1's at NKP Thailand from October 1968 to June of 1969. This was after working EC-121D'S at McClellan AFB Sacramento California.

The picture of the AD-4 with the "Atlanta" fuselage band and model # 168 was the very first civilian AD. Restored to flying condition by Dave Forrest of Atlanta, GA. (BU# 23827) was a 12 year project. Dave didn't know at the time he was starting a trend. Great documentary! Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed this! I remember the Dave Forrest AD-4 restoration in the late '70's early '80's. It was well covered in Air Classics and other vintage aviation magazines and it was apparently was a big challenge to get it airworthy. I believe Forrest had long since sold the plane when I photographed it in 1988. Are you related to him?

Surely enjoyed the splendid documentary on a splendid aircraft. If not stated directly, you most certainly alluded to the versatility of the Skyraider. On of the most unusual "variants" was as a "tanker"! I saw this while on a Mediterranean cruise (Lake Champlain, CVA 39) in 1957. Refueling-equipped Skyraiders were launched to provide emergency fuel for planes running low while in the landing queue. Bit of a strange sight seeing Cougars, Demons, and others, "nursing" from an A1.

Very nice. Neglected to mention that for the Navy, our primary mission between Korea and Vietnam was "nuclear delivery". The concept was penetration at about 100' theoretically below radar; and then lofting the bomb with 1/2 Cuban 8 maneuver. The engineers said we had a 90+% survival of the blast. No one talked about surviving to the target and back. We spent hour after hour doing low level navigation (typical flight about 7hrs), and practicing the loft maneuver. Fortunately never done operationally. The loss of Vietnamese pilots during training was fearsome; but, they persevered.

Thanks for your comment! I should have devoted some of it to nuclear delivery. I've heard from several Skyraider pilots who carried nukes in them during the Suez Crisis of 1956.

I have over 900 flight hours rightseat in EA1F's with VAW-13 1966-67 from Yankee Station . The SVAF Skyraider Was our VR 774 Buno 132683 which I have 7 combat missions in.. ECMO/ NFO . VAW-13 flew from 1965 to 68 with EA1F's during which one was shotdown losing the 4 aircrew , 4 were lost by ditching in the water losing one pilot. Thanks for the video !! FAT SPADS FOREVER !!

I was ships company on the USS Ranger CVA61, '64-66. 2 deployments to Yankee Station (Vietnam.) I watched one of the Skyraiders come back with damage. It was flying on ground affect and couldn't get up to flight deck level. After several attempts it was decided to ditch along side the carrier. The sea was moderately rough and the plane flipped on its top as soon as it hit the water. The helicopter was over it almost instantly but it sank with no sigh of the pilot. There was no ejection seat and no time to get out of the cockpit and onto a wing. They always deck launched. Wind the engine, release the brakes and chug down the deck. Neat at night, because at full take off power, the tips of the props produced an electric blue "flame." Bullet holes were "fixed" with a piece of tape and a rattle can of grey paint.

As an engineer, have always admired Heinemann and the simplicity of what he put together. Watching this video got me thinking, what would happen if someone put a modern turbo prop setup on the front of an A-1.

There was alot of exposure to A1 Skylanders in the movie Bridges of Toko Ri...actually had a scene where they had 2o or more A1s tied down on the deck of a big carrier and used the power of the propellers to maneuver the carrier into position at docking...

The EA-1E with the number 31 on the nose, bu#135178, is in fact the very last A-1 to fly in the Navy. In its original gray color it was assigned to the Navel Aerospace Medical Institute at NAS Pensacola. Its stated mission was for use in testing flight cadets who were experiencing motion sickness. After taking a certain medicine the would get in the back, pull the curtains so they couldn't see out, and the pilot would take them for a ride. Though this was, as I said, the stated purpose it was more often used for "training" flights. What better way to get in your required flight hours. I had the privilege of being the plane captain in '71 and enjoyed taking numerous flights beside the pilot, once flying from Pensacola to St. Louis and then on to the pilots hometown field in Indiana then returning. Pretty good duty for an enlisted man.

@@JARREGULUS Here's some further information for you. In late 1971, coming home to NAS Pensacola after a long flight, the pilot (whose name I won't mention) being so familiar with the plane and while conversing with someone in the tower, failed to go through his checklist. He made a perfect landing without the benefit of landing gear. The only visible damage was to the drop tanks and the prop. Of course, since the plane was under power, the engine would need to be replaced. The pilot's pride caused him to suffer the great temptation to move the gear control to the down position but he knew this was a greater sin than the one he had just committed. And besides, he also knew that a report of gear failure would spark an investigation and he would be found out anyway. While waiting for a replacement engine and prop I was transferred to the transient line for the remaining four months of my enlistment. I assumed I had seen the last of #178 until several years later when I was shocked to see a picture of it on a magazine rack. Then around 2008 or '09 I met the then-owner, Eric Downing, at an airshow in Indianapolis. He was very gracious and invited me to come to St. Louis for a ride but I never did make the trip. He told me at the time he had located dual-control equipment that he intended to install and I wonder if that ever happened. To think I might have had the opportunity to take the controls, however briefly, is something I regret not following up on. I have some photos you might be interested in but I'm not sure how or where to share them.

@@larryh451 Thanks for the update. I did not know that the plane had been through an expensive belly landing. I know several tenants at Creve Coeur airport where it is based but do not know Mr. Downing. As I said, he has been trying to sell it, so I don't know if that happened yet. Too bad you didn't grab the chance to hitch a ride on it! That would have been something. I have seen it flying over my house several times in recent years. Great video! Referring to a previous post mentioning the "nuclear delivery" period during the late 1950's, as a pilot for VA(AW)33, our long range speed was 160 kts, rather than the 140 kt speed mentioned in the video. Just an FYI.

I know the P-51 is the more popular of the prop warbirds but I think the A-1, P-47 and F-4U are the best looking and I think they are beautiful (the same as a classic pickup truck is). A great video series would be one on Ed Heinemann and all of his designs. He had so many great designs and his career was astonishing.

When I was at the Vungtau airfield in the 60s we saw a Vietnamese A1 circling the field . He made a few passes showing off before landing .when he lined up for we thought he was just doing a low flyby because the gear was still retracted . To our surprise he landed with the gear up . That big prop made a few strikes on the runway and it came to a stop on the runway . The top popped open and the pilot and a white women jumped out of the plane . They ran down the runway and down the road to the main gate and disappeared into downtown Vungtau . The AF took the plane away on a flatbed . Scratch one A1 .

Kind of surprised you didn't mention one of the most attention-catching stats of the AD-1 [maybe in Pt.2?], that being that its lift capacity was the same as the famed B-17 of WW2 [mounted on external stores on the AD-1, of course!] 1 engine vs.4, and a crew of 1 vs.10. Now *that's* efficiency! ;-)

I built a model of this in early 80s in England and had it dangling off ceiling by fishing wire. Question: did those folding wings, with heavily loaded pylons, not cause stress problems on/around the wing hinges etc?

I'm just guessing that they could use dummy bombs for air shows. I really doubt that they would fold the wings with live ordnance.

Thanks for watching, you're not alone on the music issue. On all new videos we are getting rid of music except for the very beginning and very end. Several of our videos have that problem because our microphone had a failed channel we did not know about and the narration only comes out the left channel only, with music coming out of both, drowning out narration. Especially annoying for viewers with high-end TV's and stereo systems. Most viewers using phones, PC's tablets do not notice.

I want an AD5! Why? Why fly if you can’t take your friends with you? Now all I need is money! Seriously,I’m watching the footage of the restored AD-5 making a low level flight over the airfield at an air show, and could only imagine how devastating it would have been with a pair of Gatling guns under the wings. What an amazing aircraft. All it needed in my opinion was improved armor, along the line of what is used today in the A10 warthogs.

We apologize for that annoyance--lots of complaints and we found that our microphone was only working through 1 channel. You will hear the voice if you balance up that channel on your equipment. We fixed all that in later videos and got rid of the music. Wish we could change it on this and a few subsequent videos but we can't.

Sorry for the inconvenience. I know from several viewers there was problem with the sound depending on the systems they use--I discovered that the microphone I used for narration had a failed channel that with some viewers' systems causes the narration to be drowned out by the second channel of the 2-channel background music. For all videos produced after Skyraider Part II we have eliminated all such background music during narration and will continue to do so--as we have always have done with our live-action aircraft operational scenes.

The Skyraider never really caught on as a sub hunter, at all, because, according to Squadron Signal's A-1 Skyraider In Action,(Aircraft #-246) (2nd Edtition), Douglas only built one AD-5S, so your statement about the Skyraider being a sub hunter is wrong.

@@AeroDinosaur years ago I worked with a guy that was a Spad pilot. One of the things he told me was that when one was shot down ( after the pilot was clear, dead or rescued) the next mission was to destroy the plane. The 20MM cannons required no external power and as such could be used by the VC.

I love the content, but for god’s sake, please drop the background music. It makes it difficult to understand the speaker! Very distracting! In fact, I would suggest that you re-upload all your videos without the music.

A few others have a problem with this too. I never upload without testing sound levels myself and would not do it if I thought they were as bad as you say--that said I've sometimes noticed the problem with other of our videos, and then other times they're fine. Don't know whether the problem is bandwidth variations after uploading or what. Others don't notice any problem even when I ask them to check, but will use your remedy going forward and not use music during narration at all. Thanks for watching and glad you at least liked the content.

@@AeroDinosaur ; Thank you. The thing to remember is that people are are watching these videos on so many different platforms: tablets, computers, phones, and TVs with sound systems. In addition, not everyone has perfect hearing, and some sounds come thru to the brain muffled. It's hard to satisfy all requirements, but thanks for trying.

No longer in US inventory-all flying examples are private owners/airshow displays. Maybe some obscure foreign air force might be operating one--but I am not aware of any.

The legend is wrong. It wasn't the Navy that who had problems with the Douglas BTD, but Heinneman (he considered it was only an interim design). He and his colleagues had been working on a better aircraft for weeks and asked the Navy for permission to withdrawn the BTD from consideration. They asked for 4 weeks to resubmit, the Navy agreed to the withdrawal request and gave them 16 hours to submit the new design scheduling the next meeting with the team from Douglas at 09:00 the following morning.

@@AeroDinosaur thanks for your reply. Heinemann is a hero of mine ever since I read Combat Aircraft Designer (his autobiography). There's some great stories in there. If you ever do one on the A4D don't forget to include the story that the Navy didn't initially believe it was soon light and so capable.

You have a great speaking style and voice, Consider getting rid of the distracting music in the right channel and record your voiceover on BOTH left and right channels. The music does not add to the presentation at all IMO. I appreciate the information and your knowledgeable narration but please ditch the music!

Agreed! Viewers made us aware of that problem a year ago (with both Part 1 and Part 2 of the Skyraider videos) when we released them and don't use music anymore. Unfortunately we cannot edit the problem out with an already uploaded video. Sorry for the annoyance.

@@couttsw Thanks--we would "remove and replace", but requires new URL and it would reset our 170K views to "zero", killing our analytics and the many comments which we find extremely valuable. We have a 94% "like" ratio with this video (check out the string of other comments) which is unlikely to change--about 5% complain about the inappropriate music. Often, it depends on the sound system a viewer uses. People with advanced sound systems are likely to pick up on the annoying music overlay, and we never have used music with our operational segments, which is the main draw. As a result we have moved on. We have not used music since these two Skyraider videos were posted well over a year ago.
