The Popcorn Hat (World Premiere) - composer Jeff Beal, choreographer Amy Seiwert, dancers Lauren Pschirrer and Mengjun Chen, Lonnie Stewart costumes and set, commissioned by the Heartland Festival Orchestra, Gary and Sara Connor James sponsors. Performed by the Heartland Festival Orchestra under the direction of Artistic Director / Conductor David Commanday on October 22nd, 2022 in the concert titled "Invitation to the Dance" at Five Points Washington in Washington, IL.
With a scenario based on Carl Sandburg's Rootabaga Stories, Popcorn Hat is a pas de deux vignette depicting the magical encounter of Blixie Bimber and Jason Squiff, as influenced by the Gold Buckskin Whincher. Blixie, a light-footed dreamer, wanders on, playing with the whincher.
Distracted by the orchestra, a fascinating vision, she drops the whincher and wander to explore. Jason strides on with purpose, but stumbles on the whincher. When he pockets the bauble it works it's magic-magically transforming his hat, and transfixing Blixie's heart with love for a man with the letter "q" in his name.
