I think "Linda" entered the list in 1940 and dominated it by the mid-40s because the actress Linda Darnell became popular in film in 1940 and remained popular into the 50s. If you look closely, the first state "Linda" dominates is Utah in 1940, the same year Linda Darnell starred in Brigham Young, a movie about two mormon lovers during the time of the establishment of Mormonism in the 1840's. And the next states "Linda" dominates are California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington--all surrounding Hollywood.

The written form used in Texas is certainly Iberian (and not Hispanic as Americans define it to be only Spain). Nonetheless, it is just as Joseph that is the written form (with variations) for the same name by French, German and English speaking countries (and some Nordic countries) or Yūsuf for Arabic, Yousef for Persian, Yossi in Israel or even Giuseppe in Italy. Sounds silly but it's a very different definition.

While it may not be accurate to say it would cover the Middle East completely from start to finish, it would probably dominate the region. Wow. The name "Mary" had been the most popular girl's name in most states for decades (1910-1946), and like a coin flip it switched to "Linda" in most states in 1947. I was expecting a spike in the popularity of "Dorothy" in 1940 (the year after _The Wizard of Oz_ came out).

It germinated for awhile, and it exploded in popularity about ten years later, with most people not even knowing its origin.
The Wizard of Oz was actually not that popular of a movie when it was originally put in movie theaters. It became popular in the 50's after it started being run as a television special.
