👍😀The Euro specs version is way nicer and faster than the US version. You should try a Euro-WLS 330hp once. I drove one once and i almost crapped my pants. The plain fact is this car is still has the feared reputation on the roads. Nobody wants to racing with you even people are know there are much stronger and faster cars out today.

fantastic stuff, great video, great car and great owner too. These must be rare as the only other one ive seen is my old boss's 930 widebody turbo in guards red which had the red carpet and full red interior it was stunning! Ill never forget this detail about it: and ive never seen another car with it: on the dasboard there was a handbrake light which was larger than the one in this video and it had a german word across the centre of it? it really stood out to me as i thought it was just uber german cool! 👍👍👍👍

The 930 is such a striking car. I think it just has to do with the small 911 chassis complete with the narrow and lean cockpit middle section making those fenders even more beautiful. I think the controllability of the cars now has a lot to do with modern tires. My performance cars in the 80's came with tires that had harder compounds than all season tires have now.
@culcune

I just saw a video where someone mentioned this. The handling issues in the 80s 911s were due to tire technology at that time.

That's an interesting point he makes - when these came out a sub-6 second 0-100 was considered super fast. By today's standards, we're quite comfortable with it. For perspective, a 2022 Golf R is quicker in every gear. Still, the simple physics of that pendulum effect when you go off-throttle in the mid-corner remains a defining characteristic that will catch you out if you're not aware of it, and maybe even if you are. You drive a 911 of this era differently to other cars - or you crash. It earned it's reputation. Slow in, fast out.

I have an earlier 79' 930 from before the "widowmaker" lawsuit . Yes, it's a dangerous car for people who don't learn easily. That red over red is pretty cool, mine is black over cashmere tan so she's less flashy /noticeable. Still a very fast car that does driving very well for an old car. I used to also have a 911SC with a Paxton supercharger on it... that car was even more dangerous as it had instant turbo level horsepower in the SC body and less traction. That had even more lift off issues 😮

Great video! I always wondered if modern tires and suspension upgrades would tame the lift-corner issues?
@grumpy9478
@grumpy9478 Год назад
not much. it's physics. the first major upgrade Porsche introduced was to spec wider wheels & tires on the rear, where the weight over the axle that delivers thrust is greatest. decreasing turbo lag also helped drivers. finally, as turbocharged models hp continued to increase, they went to 4 WD on most of them to distribute traction to all corners, improving grip under lift-throttle yaw. early Porsche turbos were / are not forgiving of inexperienced drivers over their limits. the modification for that condition is to go to school.

Really enjoyed & needed this video badly as I’m considering purchasing a highly but very professionally built 911 turbo on steroids. Solely to be used as a track & time attack car. Had initially settled on a Cayman GT4 Club Sport, probably the safer & wiser option being a mid engine layout? But with the 911 turbo being 600lbs lighter than the GT4 & over 100 more hp at low boost, it makes more sense from a power to weight issue, especially considering its purpose as a track car. The thought of driving an old school 911 turbo, especially on the track, scared the crap out of me with the lift off oversteer issue. But then I thought, the smart way to tackle my fears would be to spend time in professional performance driving training courses run by Porsche specifically for track/circuit racing in the 911 turbo before taking it on the track on my own. Then once I’ve got the hang of it & the confidence to take it further in the next step in competing. Now, I’m more looking forward in learning & mastering a new skill in the art of driving a 911 Turbo fast on the track.

@@Rennthusiast Porsche began to introduce wider rear wheels & tires to address lift/trailing throttle oversteer in 911s beginning in '72 (pre-turbo, but increasing in hp) after other remedies proved inadequate (added weight to the frt bumper, increased wheelbase). Pirelli CN36s & P7s, Michelin XWX were good perf tires in their day. Porsche makes a big deal over what tires are acceptable on their cars.

I found the 964 Turbo quite benign and kinda sluggish actually.. Sold it to get my first Porsche back, a 964 C4 which I find much more entertaining to drive.

Few easy mods and 400hp wakes the car up and warp speed engaged.

You can't drive a 930 Turbo on modern tire compounds and say you have an accurate sense of its sketchiness. Your average all season today has 10x more grip.

I think the thing that made these scary is how bad tires of the Era were. Putting modern tires on these things dramatically improves things. Also the 4 speed and gearing. What sucks about the 930 is the price has probably passed the expectations. Back when these where 40 to 50k was the best time. Now at 100k or higher it's hard to no recommend a 996/7 turbo or a nice 991.2 because of how much higher porsche interiors and livability has become.

This car is dangerous if you don’t know how to drive it. Not a good track car unless you know how to drive it. The problem is you need to spool up well before the apex. Don’t lift in a corner. Below boost its not very good.

Nice car. Red on red. Wow. Did I notice a new car in your garage? Looks like a bronco but maybe you have had it already. (You give your wife a space ;) Btw, nice start on the bat auction. My bet was $120k..

Thank you. I haven’t been watching the auction. Not even kidding, haven’t looked once. Just letting it unfold the way it does. I have heard snippets here and there from buddies and it’s going well, I understand. Letting Patrick (The Patina Group) do his thing with it.

no wonder he had the turbo "rebuilt" (bearing seals). typical consumption is a quart / 1000 mi. +/-. too many owners ran 'em hot & hard before engine reaching operating temp, & shutting 'em off while still glowing after very hot runs. "coking up the seals" was a happening thing in the '80s.
