amazing film. amazing soundtrack. Campion is an amazing director and Nicole Kidman is one of the best actresses of our time. Portrait of a Lady is such a work of art.
Yes it happens sometimes, and it makes me pull out my hair everytime. But he portrayed Isabel as a clever, intelligent woman, who married this man, which went completely against her character. Nowhere in the book do I find a reason why she fell in love with him. Not even the moment it happened. Dumb, codependent women might fall in love with men like Ormond, but Isabel was independent and everyone advised her against it. And then she stayed with him. Just annoyed and rambling.
When I read the novel, I had a similarly difficult time accepting her marriage to Osmond. But then I thought of my mother's marriage to my father, and I realized that such things do happen....
read the book marvelous just as anything h james wrote.. but this isabel character made me pull my hair the whole reading .. made me more confused about you all women =S
I just finished both Volumes of Portrait of A Lady. I could have throttled Isabel Archer at the ending. What a poor choice! Why couldn't she have left Osmond? Why did she return to him? She seemed so oblivious to all the warnings she received about him. Well, it did make for a good read. I just did not like the ending.
i dont think anyone loves with their heads.. more than that, when im most in love it tends to be without any clear reason.. yet i cant see why does she finds him attractive.. for the reader hes so obviously a jerk who was about to ruin her .. i think henry james did fail in making him more appealing.. maybe he felt that way.. like great women fell in love with assholes most of the time.. and he was powerless to warn them just like we're incapable of helping Isabel
