I love how he talks about digital pitch-change and there is a huge extension behind him

Pure Magic; can't wait to hear the Subcontrabassoon in person!! Also good job dad (Robert) with writing the first Subcontrabassoon piece!

I was wondering what you meant! Cool though! Love your videos about the really high registers on a bassoon. It's stupidly amazing!

Very close to the 32' bombarde stops found on the pedal organ of a pipe organ.
@shiningarmor2838
@shiningarmor2838 7 лет назад
It's not nearly as sharp or jarring as a bombarde, it's more akin to an hautbois or fagott

Although I do not play anymore, I remember the hardest thing, for me, when learning the contra, was how to keep my eyes from shaking when in the lower register, and learning to sit sideways and still see my music and the conductor while being psudo-cross-eyed (I'm quite short and the contra's not much smaller than me-watching me carry it was quite hilarious, as well). I can only imagine what my eyes would do, or how I would even dare to see around or carry this monster. It doesn't mean I wouldn't want to try, though.

Though I play bass clarinet, I'm truly fascinated by the bassoon family. The bassoon and contrabassoon have this peculiar sound that I would listen to all day if I could; however, below the (solo setting only; in the reinforcement of the contrabassoon, I hear nothing but rattle) Eb0, I hear no distinguishable pitch, only a rattle. I can hear some overtones, but none sound like Bb0/1, any other Bb in the overtone series. The most prominent one is an F# (not entirely sure of the octave), I believe. Could I train my ear to hear the pitches, or is that not possible?

Bass Clarinet Is Life Realistically, those indistinguishable notes at the bottom of its range would rarely if ever be used. Once you get down into the 24 CPS or Hz range, things become really difficult to hear unless it is placed in a bassoon choir which he demonstrated in the video

I can't wait to follow this to completion and hopefully see this through to completion. Will gladly contribute when I receive my next paycheck.

This may be the most awesome thing I've ever seen. My only concern is that on the digitally altered lower contrabassoon notes, there was a clacking noise. I couldn't be sure whether this is my speakers not dealing well with a lower range or just some loss in quality from the altering. Overall, I'll be following the sub-contrabassoon project intently and am excited to see how it goes.

It’s the sound of fundamental frequencies not adding up, the subcontrabassoon would hav that sound with lower notes, due to its non harmonically correct range.

The contrabassoon and subcontrabassoon both make the bassoon choir sound all the more majestic... perhaps because it makes it sound like a pipe organ?

I was thinking, if on the bassoon you can make notes below B flat with multiphonics, on the bass clarinet it would be possible too, right? I already found content about multiphonics on the bass clarinet,but I never found anyone talking about multiphonics for bass below low E flat / low C. I would really love to use bass multiphonics on the bass clarinet 🥺

The score looks awesome and realy sounds differet the second time (with the scb added). The effect is quite similar to the one of an organ inoling the 32 feet pipes.

The bassoon chords with the subcontrabassoon almost sounds like a pipe organ.

The lowest notes sound like the low reed stops on a pipe organ, The wave length is so large that you'd have to have a good ear to hear the pitch. However it does have a good bass tone. Have you heard of the Tubex Sub Contrabass Saxophone?

Hello Richard!! Here in Brazil we don't find content teaching the techniques to reach such low notes in the Bassoon. Could you teach us? Is there a course to learn this technique?

What is the cause of that clicking noise in the really, really low notes?
@ragerabbitpro
@ragerabbitpro 8 лет назад
the frequencies are so low, the pitch is hard to hear... and since its so low, you can hear the reed vibrating to make the note play.

@Subcontrabassoon 8 лет назад
+roy childs It's quite likely we're distantly related (fifth cousins twice removed or something) as most American Bobos descend from a single French man who moved to Virginia in 1680. But we've certainly never met or spoken, as much as I would enjoy to.

+Aya Kakizaki No it is not, there is no such instrument
@Subcontrabassoon
@Subcontrabassoon 9 лет назад
+Aya Kakizaki No. Once it is completed it will be the lowest woodwind instrument ever made (beating the historical Bb octocontrabass clarinet by a semitone, and the extant Bb subcontrabass saxophone by a major seventh). But, there are at least two organs capable of playing down to C-1 (about 8 Hz) and thus beating the future subcontrabassoon by a major sixth.
@oscarsimao6349
@oscarsimao6349 7 лет назад
There is a 64 foot clarinet made out of pvc that could beat that, by reaching C-2 at 4 Hz. Sadly there are no sound files on it
