If you don't have a good scale, you can tell the difference by the shape of the bocal. The English horn bocal is a single gentle curve, while the bass oboe bocal is a more complex S-shape.
This is really beautiful - it's so lovely to hear such lyrical melodies on the contrabassoon. I hadn't realised how expressive it was; beautiful writing and playing.
Richard you are so amazing and I have been a fan since I started bassoon 5 years ago and I may not have met you but my teacher has and I hear good things about you. I am from Montana and I am the only Highschool Contrabassoonist in the whole state(I played it at our all state and all stars) but I was wondering if you could make a video explaining how you got into contrabassoon. But anyways I hope the Subcontrabassoon is going well and I wish you luck.
Traveling with a subcontrabassoon must suck. Aside from the bulk, every customs official is like, "We have to examine your luggage because we're a bit alarmed by whatever the hell is in there and we have to make sure it's not a surface-to-air missile system."
