This speaks deeply to the complexities of life. As much as most of us like to think we have concrete identities that couldn't possibly be questioned, this woman's story is proof that some of us are more talented than we would like to think. Perhaps there's an underlying message in this talk along the lines of 'don't limit your potential by allowing your potential to be limited.'
I've lived a similar experience: Over 25 years ago, my mother and father decided to move to a small town in South America. We were the only Koreans in town and I had to find the balance between old, conservative parents and more free-spirited Latin Americans. Now that I'm an adult, I wish I hadn't been such a drama queen about it. :)
Diversity is not a strength, or weakness for that matter. It is neutral. Diversity has pros and cons. Each person considers them pros or cons depending on their system of values. Societies rely on having a certain amount of stability to remain functional. By stability I mean having similar values. When immigration introduces new groups of people into a nation, a sad side effect is a conflict of value systems. And that creates chaos. If we are fortunate, some blend in great harmony, and we can enjoy food, music, and learn from the values they implement the best. But some value systems are irreconcilable, and are bent on completely overthrowing that society because they believe it to be vastly inferior. The most clever ones will try gain our trust, and when they have a position of power, overthrow it all.
Like when the Europeans went into America. You need to watch more Stewart Lee. I live in the UK. Which is nothing like a wild, untamed continent filled with an indigenous aboriginal culture. We are part of a global capitalistic empire spreading from the USA across Europe, into Russia, Africa, Asia and Australia. Such an empire has so many agreements, laws, unions and partnerships in place that the idea this could be overthrown by a few hotheads or “clever” individuals is a bit comical. For instance, it wasn’t the hotheads and clever migrants who gained positions of power to overthrow British inclusion in the EU, our current form of political and economic stability, it was traditionalist conservatives who caved to the call for a referendum by their overly vocal right wing. If anything, we need to be more concerned about how poorly informed everyone is about our existing agreed values and bonds rather than blaming people who have barely wiped their feet on our doormat. We have always had a very fluid and cosmopolitan capital city. And many other British cities and towns have their historic “Quarters” that indicate areas rich in migrant workers doing their thing. So it’s really not unheard of for a well-established country to accept large numbers of people from other cultures to set up shop and home, either temporarily or permanently. Fortunately, the UK has a block of strong values that include a live and let live liberalism and stoicism. This is covered with a skin of equally strong traditionalist, conservatism, and is veined through with artists, radicals, hotheads and naysayers. Like a maturing Stilton cheese, we don’t get to enjoy the whole cheese without the liberalism, conservatism or the importantly tasty bits that could be insufferable on their own. Personally, I think we have let the outer skin get a little too thick.
Yeah, so Korea is one of the most peaceful places on earth, directly because of the LACK of diversity and I hope it stays that way forever, next to zero violent crime here in South Korea.... it is ideal.

John Parker Of course it was a liberal that discovered it, when do you ever hear or see a conservative talking about findings in science?? They dont understand that stuff! Especially if it is psychology or sociology. That article I read it completely. It is too bad it doesnt cite any sources at all, especially if it is using a scientific process. So the article kind of seems outdated (broken links, over 11 years old). But even if we were to take it at face value, the article repeatedly said things like this: "In other words, those in more diverse communities may do more bowling alone, but the creative tensions unleashed by those differences in the workplace may vault those same places to the cutting edge of the economy and of creative culture." I would be glad to quote more lines if you respond. This "diversity is poison" claim is true! Just like real poison, a tolerance is developed and eventually an immunity. Diversity will make us stronger in the long run!!
thats the point- diversity is so often used in the context of leftist nonsense that people tune out even in cases where diversity is considered in a non-political context.
I can understand that feeling. I'm Austrian but grew up in Germany. That might not sound like a too drastic change, but with the _wrong_ accent you stand out immediately and we Austrians have a very rich vocabulary that would allow us to be completely unintelligible to Germans, if we wished to, while having a high Austrian which is basically 99% identical to high German. My parents wanted me to fit in, thus tried to speak high German, which resulted in me growing up speaking high German with Austrian accent, but not understand my own relatives nor Baverians, due to the different vocabulary and different pronunciation. My own grandmother told me to freaking leave her alone as I'm _too German_ and in Germany I had to hear after growing up and living for 15 years there and being from a closely related ethnicity, that I should GTFO and back to Austria! It really made me feel lost and I think it's responsible for even 10 years later that I'm much faster at making friends with anyone that doesn't speak German!
While addressing a challenge or objective will diversity change the resolution or outcome?For example if a solution to a problem is the same in the USA and Nigeria but there is a diverse group in the USA and an all black group in Nigeria does the USA group have a better solution?I don't think so. If not, what benefits are there from being diverse?

💕 This I can relate to this, God sent at the right time. The point is it's not about where you come from or live. It's about the skills and ways you use these differences and life lessons to join with others and make a difference in this world and improve not to seperate. Many people obviously missed the point. so a TED talk that tells you to just be yourself and do whatever you like... really worthy of a TED talk .... "identity" is a lie anyways ... we are all individuals and the boxes others or we ourselves "put us in" really mean absolutely nothing. Just live a good life, find some good values and all the other stuff won't matter.
shes not talking about the sociology/politics of identity silly, shes talking about the internal psychology of manipulating ones view of your own identity.
