About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.

We need a follow up interview on the statement he made about 100% of the people in a test project being no longer homeless. That would imply that either they were working poor and homeless OR someone came up with subsidized housing for them OR they were able to take that money to get to somewhere family or friends would let them get set up. There is no way that $1000/mo could end homelessness for someone without other income unless one of those things is true.

I had been homeless for a few years when I received my stimulus payments. I saved that money. I used it for my security deposit when my name finally came up on an affordable housing list. It took 4.5 years, and countless hours of research and filling out applications. But I got here.

If I had the land I would use it to build a farming community with shelter and care for anyone who needs a break but wants to achieve self-sufficiency. We are going to build that world, my friend. We will sacrifice everything for a roof, and electric, whether we can eat everyday or not. 😢 After COVID our food stamps were cut to $20/mo. We were thrown off Medicaid even though the federal government says we are disabled. It's a disgrace. Thanks Hellinois. 😢

Been homeless on & off for about 9 years now. I have worked the whole time, but thats not enough to keep me off the streets. Very hard to do it alone. If I had the money, I would use the money for a stable housing, a good running car, and get the medical help I need.

I'm also on the edge with no fixed address. It was quite disappointing to discover that most charities just reccommend each other and are, in fact, in the business of employing staff. The help done is curated for PR and fundraising but the rest of us are out.

Absolutely fabulous ! It reminds me of an episode of New Amsterdam where the director started to give people "WHAT THEY NEEDED TO HEAL", sometimes being just money to take the bus to their home. Of course, the bureaucracy found it totally unacceptable. I hope this project lives in every city in the world.

Oh Thank Goodness-and-Light. With all the good work I’ve done one person at a time. Little stuff and middle sized stuff for me. No one I know has followed up including my children. They’re just proud of me and amazed. Oh thank goodness. I’m now entering my 85th year and I’m all tired out. My partner is in a nursing home and I visit him every single day with all the minor things he needs , I am going to get him closer but I’m all tired out folks. I have said all my life if I had a lot of money,I would give it away and just use what I need which isn’t much. A friend from many years ago came into some money. She was helping organizing help people in need. I hadn’t seen her in years and she told me the reason why was she remembered what I said about giving money to the needy. That touched my heart.❤

I think a good idea would be a video from a former homeless person that educates someone how to tell the difference between a homeless person who would benefit from cash and someone who is going to spend it on an addiction. It’s not always obvious. I know your saying the data doesn’t support it but It’s why people don’t give. There not gonna take that for an answer but a course that makes them feel like they’re making an informed decisions based on cues would probably be more effective at getting people to give.

When I give money to someone in need I don't care what they use it for. If it turns out the money goes to addiction then I hope for that brief peoriod of time they are relieved from their pay. In an ideal world I wish the addiction did not exsisit but it does. We need to stop punishing people.

I haven't gone through the whole video yet and i'm as progressive as they come and love this channel, but there is a problem with this large scale and that is corporate greed. If there is now a higher floor for income, companies will adjust their prices accordingly to the point where this extra $1k a month will still not be enough. We all saw it happen during the pandemic with the stimulus checks. Housing and grocery prices are now as high as ever. UBI would have to be followed by a myriad of regulations aimed at price control.

I experienced homelessness because of domestic violence. I self Advocated in order to get my daughter and I housed. I don't have a subsidy, I have been working with a career coach, 16l5 certifications later still no response from employers. I have a degree, and had been self employed since 2017. I have attempted a fiscal sponsor for a pilot project, yetno one is interested in my idea. I have participated in my own self directed outreach, thus is unpaid . Transfering 14 unsheltered out homelessness in 32 days, using the same pathway I used for my situation.

Universal income would mean the world to me right now. Health issues that forced me off work and an insurance company, that despite a surgery needed after consultation with a specialist, refuse to give me a cent. If it wasn’t for family I’d be homeless. Anything right now in the form of an income would make a huge difference for mental health alone. It’s about dignity and being able to even slightly take care of yourself. I’m at the end of my rope because I can’t keep relying on my elderly family and the surgery is taking forever because of our 🇨🇦 healthcare system.

Homelessness is caused by several different factors. Drug and alcohol addiction and bad life choices, then there are those who are homeless because they simply can't afford rent or a place to live. it's sad and should not be especially in the U.S. People definitely need to work and many people who are homeless in fact DO WORK and the cost of living is just too D-M High. We have to get inflation down and we need to provide free to affordable rehab programs for addicted people

@@InvisiblePeople After watching all your videos, I find them quite valuable. Especially for people who have never allowed themselves to see the humanity in people who are on the street. I frequently recommend them, as an introduction to homelessness, for those who don't understand it. You are quite talented. You make sure the viewer really sees the people you interview. That is hard to do. I do know a little about your history by what you have chosen to reveal in them, so thank you for what you have decided to do with your life. It's amazing. You don't know anything about me, but I also have been homeless in my past. I was lucky enough to get back to a productive life, and became a medical anthropologist, then a physician, and now teach at a medical school. One of my duties is inpatient treatment of substance dependency patients. I also oversee an addiction medicine fellowship program. So maybe I am more optimistic about treatment programs for substance issues than you are. I like to think that there is a 50/50% chance at every intervention. But SAMHSA says it's 68% success as a national average. Keep bringing this issue forward. You may not realize it, but you have been teaching a lot of young healers how to look at this important subject. Thank you.😇

As someone with significant mental health issues, extended times of being homeless both working and non-working and multiple such occasions I am going to respectfully disagree. I am in "safe" housing with SSID now, But for the first 5 years of that I had zero usable cash income because of the lack of affordable housing at SSID payment rates. Which is still below the basic income model here and even with subsidized housing I have very limited funds for things I need let alone things I want/need due those same disabilities. It can take months or years to get services or equipment. If we start with the income first, then the individual can pick safe housing that works for them not based off a system's decision. The worst place for the homeless to end up in St. Paul are the two biggest shelter/housing options in the city. One wastefully built on the most expensive property around while still treating the people they help like gutter trash, having open crime and drug use in the hallways. But this is that safe housing you are describing. I refused to use those places and have never felt even remotely safe in any place like them. That is as an over 6 foot well-built male whose physical disability only became a problem about a decade ago. AKA I wasn't the biggest guy in the room but by no means the runt either. If I didn't feel safe, most others won't either which ramps up drug use and mental health crisis(s). If you go basic income first, with housing experts to help guide you on where to look and what is available, I would have been safer faster, more likely to have been able to stay off the street and not have repeating episodes of homelessness and would have gotten a diagnosis long before 53. I am 60 now. My mental health would be better today, and I might even still be working instead of being unable to work at all. shrugs, just my experiences.

I absolutely love what you are doing. I am a 65 year old on disability. I live in an rv and am fine. My youngest daughter, age 26, has recently become homeless. There is a cabin on the lot I rent she can live in but it is very old with no heat or insulation. If we could winterize the cabin you would have another success story. I am in El Paso County. So yeah, money is very, very, very powerful but the people that make the money are also in charge of doing something good with their money or charging people $20 for coffee and water, Like I am hoping to sell my artwork one day like my gift boxes that I paint and I’ve been painting gift boxes lately and it’s really really really fun And even I know that people don’t have money to be able to afford nice stuff so yeah and I don’t price my stuff as high like not even the biggest canvases that I have painted on would not go past $20 or $25 like I think maybe I would sell them for like $17 or $18 you know so yeah you can be the creator of something like Sure, I can get out a table and then sit at the end of my driveway and sell my art and I have done that for sure I have had no luck with that but you know I don’t price my artwork for high cost because I know people don’t have money But that is just me I am not a greedy person

Giving money to the poor may be a nice attitude, but like putting a small bandage on a bruise outside your chest, it doesn't solve the problem. Capitalism needs unemployed people, people on the streets, people without anything to eat, people without money, people in debt, sick people without money to pay their bills, capitalism needs the desperation of thousands so that they can be a workforce cheap to generate profit for a few. Without significant changes in the way of society to build Socialism, we will not have changes and these people who received money sooner or later will be at risk of returning to the streets.

Nothing to do with capitalism. Most people just hate poor people. I can only think of one person Ive ever met that wasn't a volunteer that didn't hate poor people. And poor people hate the homeless. The vast majority of people are insanely selfish and emotionally detached.

I hope you stay safe. Colorado is a really expensive state to live in and has rising crime, when most other states have dropping crime rates. Find a supportive community, if you can. Try Housing First.

@@riceexperiment definitely a crime problem here. Also a problem with militant police. I've tried everything the past ten years to get permanent housing. There are so many strings attached. Last apartment raised the rent each year more than my disability payment increases. I gave up with help and got jobs. I have 3 incomes. The requirements to get housing are just unattainable in the near future. I simply plan to own a few vehicles so that I am never without a working vehicle. But after 15 years of disability, I can't wait anymore for the government to act. This has been ridiculous and unjust. Everyone assumes the worst. People ask if I'm clean. LOL yeah I shower daily. And no I'm not homeless because of drugs. The rent is too damn high. And now storage facilities know that a rising number of us use storage as closets so they too are jacking up rates. What was $88/month last year is now $133/month!! And the rent will increase like this every 10 months. They bought all the competition and converted them. Clearly a monopoly. So I have to give up storage ASAP and move everything into something on wheels. Climate control is an issue. Security is a major issue. I plan to get a very mean dog and bang bang. The men that robbed me were well dressed and athletic. The cops said that on the video they walked directly to my car like they were invited. So I was targeted. The cops wake me up for sleeping in my car all the time. That day they accused me of lying and or of having a really bad nightmare and actually had ME under criminal investigation because I wrecked my car in the incident. And even after the video was found. The detective said to be honest and tell him if I knew the men and had invited them... No joke. I am so appalled. These cops assume I am not intelligent. I have a very high IQ thanks in part to autism. Which they knew about and used against me to justify investigating me for criminal behavior because mental illness is a crime here... It is so sad. And if I leave, then I will have let them win. I gave up San Francisco in 2009 to come here to survive because I became homeless there in August 2009 and it has never officially ended. I literally lost my housing just down the street from where Pelosi lives. Small world ...

My lady and I are homeless and are working hard trying to obtain housing. We've invested a lot into this house but are separated because of our jobs. We are so close to getting moved in but my birthday is coming up soon and I don't know if we'll be moved in by my birthday. That's my birthday wish about $1000 so my lady and I can be moved in by my birthday.

If you look up statistics, you’d see that most homeless people are sober. Most people that use drugs, live in apartments and houses and will never experience homelessness in their lifetime. Plus, the reason, people abuse drugs is to escape paying of not having money
