I think one genius move the movie did was make it a pretty small scale struggle. There were no govts or superpowers involved, it was a ragtag bunch of normal people trying to fight impossible odds.

As a war vet with survivors guilt, this movie hit me hard at various points. I never in my life thought about experiencing the world from the view of a failed kamikaze pilot. And the way they tore down Western movie tropes 🤌🏾 masterful. A direct shot at Disney marvel on my opinion.

This movie is good because, even if you removed Godzilla completely and replaced him with a tornado or tsunami or some other catastrophic event, the characters and the story itself would not be diminished. They would stand perfectly on their own. This is why so many people are enjoying this movie, it transcends being just a monster movie.

This movie stays with you LONG after you leave the theater. In an era of cash grab films that are pretty much written on auto pilot with no heart or soul along comes Godzilla Minus One to remind us that great movies can exist if the production team truly cares. That even a film about a giant lizard can be a masterpiece if you focus on what truly counts: a great story filled with heart and flawed characters you can root for as you watch them endure and grow. I’m writing this a few hours after watching the movie and I truly feel like I witnessed something special.

Super glad you had me watch this film. This film really touches the heart in more ways I can fathom. What a masterpiece of a movie.

I saw it on 12/5, it's easily the best movie I have seen in a long time. I was very glad to hear that it's getting a longer theatrical run due to the hugely positive audience reactions and continually growing interest. I usually don't care at all about the humans in a Godzilla movie, they are nothing but an annoyance. This time I was invested in them and their survival. Didn't expect that!

You've struck so many points that mirror my sentiments also. I've seen it twice, and the second viewing only made it richer. Yeah, I fell in love with them. The camaraderie and friendship of those men floating in that little wooden boat really moved me... them facing a God of nature and war. The vibe of this movie is just different, consider how many of American viewers are vested emotionally in these characters, perhaps a bit of a silly assessment, but lets be honest, we care about them, We want them to Live. There's so much I want to say, so I'll throw this out : When Koichi walked in and Noriko stood up, I confess my crush meter went off scale..Lol. How could you not love her, she was so beautiful in that moment.

I was in seventh grade when Star Wars came out. It was ALL we talked about for months and months. One thing that set it apart was its themes of heroism and optimism. The country had just gone through a decade of decline and failure, and we needed a reminder that doing great things was still possible. Star Wars provided that reminder, right at the time we needed it most. Maybe Godzilla Minus One is a reminder that great films can still be made, even in this era of Hollywood flops and CGI overload.

If you know anything about Japanese history you'll notice some subtleties about this film that perfectly encapsulates some of the many horrible aspects Japan had to endure after their army lost the war. Here is a fact about the Japanese soldiers after they lost the world. Some Japanese generals sent thousands young new recruits and low ranking officers to remain in place at stationary outposts in the middle of nowhere with no resources awaiting for orders. When Japan lost the war these generals decided to pretend these men didn't exist anymore and forced them to starve to death in the middle of winter so that their supposed casualties numbers were higher thus making them look less bad by showcasing their failure wasn't truly due to their own ineptitude but because of the loss of personnel. They STARVED their own mean TO DEATH. THOUSANDS of them, in order to a tad bit look less awful on the eyes of their people. Some of these recruits managed to survive for a year or more under these conditions and many of them were driven to suicide either out of survivor's guilt or out of shame from public opinion by the Japanese people since even tho they had nothing to do with it and simply followed orders they were as perceived to be liars who went into hiding during the general's fabricated battles in which so many of their companions lost their lives, and THE ABSOLUTE WORST PART in all of this, is that some of the families of these recruits who never came home didn't find out this UNTIL DECADES LATER IN THE FREAKING NINETEEN SEVENTIES. This is the extent at which some Japanese families were subjected by some higher ups at the Japanese army.

I have seen it twice already. Once in a Malco MXT-Atmos, which is kind of Malco's answer to IMAX, and once in a standard Atmos theater. I recommend IMAX or something like MXT. The sound is crazy in those. Godzilla's roar was deafening and almost scary. The standard Atmos just didn't have the same punch. My wife and I both cried through most of the film. She is only a casual fan of Godzilla, and she said it was the best film of the year. For me, it's the best Godzilla film made since the original, and may have even surpassed it. Easily in my top films period. **MILD SPOILER AHEAD, THOUGH IT WAS IN THE TRAILER** When Shikishima collapsed to his knees and screamed at Godzilla in frustration, despair and hopelessness as ashes rained down on him, oh man that gave me chills.

If you are placing this film alongside greats like Rocky & Shawshank, & no other G film is among them, then it is safe to say that this is the best G film of them all. Period. Let the haters hate. Life is too short not to embrace great films like this.

Really been trying to get everyone I know to go out and watch this damn movie. Not just people who like anime or Godzilla fans (which I think those categories overlap) but just everybody it was very powerful not to mention the quaint 15 million dollar budget

I went to IMBD, and had no idea Takashi Yamazaki had also directed my previously all-time favorite Japanese live action film the 2010 "Space Battleship Yamato". All you have to do is watch that film, and you can see where the amazing storytelling in Godzilla Minus One originates from.

I agree, this movie is fucking incredible. I’m so glad they extended the release time. I am going to see it again next week. This movie is powerful without Godzilla. The human story is great and Godzilla is just a bonus kind of. I laughed, I cried, I clapped and I yelled at the screen. What an amazing experience. I have completely given up on most movie studios and Hollywood would be smart to pay attention and listen. Like you, this masterpiece takes time to process and I do agree it is movie of the year. Nothing else comes close.

Yeah- the theme of “living” (even when society has guilted you into thinking your duty is NOT to live- that right there is heavy and NOT what I was expecting from a Goji film. Film is a rare 10/10

This movie was fantastic. I can’t explain how I was actually drawn into the movie numerous times because of the great acting. The way they treat Godzilla was truly a show of respect for the character. There was times I could see the weakness in some of the special effects but I actually didn’t care. I was so drawn into the movie I didn’t give a dang. I’ve watched all of the Godzilla movies and I truly believe this is the best one. None of the previous movies has the effects on me this one had…thank you for this movie…

I love how you bared your emotions over this film. That was the biggest surprise with my 2 (soon 3) viewings of this film. In the second viewing I paid more attention to Godzilla’s look because on first viewing I was watching the crowds of humans during the trampling scenes because I CARED about them! Because they were made real through the amazing writing of the preceding human scenes. Clearly the best film this year. Emotions in a Godzilla film!

You can't say it but I will. I am a combat Vet that lost a woman I loved 15 yrs ago to cancer and I've lost a child. This movie had me shed tears and the little actress that played Akiko broke me the two times she cried. But it also shows a theme that people must have in life. Yes, life at times is Godzilla in this film, and you think you are being punished for actions in your life, but life finds a way and life is a gift, so don't waste it

Godzilla shooting his ATOMIC "BLAST" and going off like a nuke and seeing the destruction it did made me think of the Terminator 2: Judgement Day scene when Sarah Connor was having a nightmare of everything getting obliterated. That's how scary that nuclear power can devastate you.
