Novelist David Mitchell is joined by artist and producer Brian Eno, for a conversation celebrating the power of music to connect across divisions, and its ability to inspire new writing.
Both long-term fans of each other’s work, David and Brian have yet to share a stage. Join us for this unique online discussion, chaired by journalist and documentary filmmaker Kieran Yates.
Presented in association with the Royal Society for Literature as part of its bicentenary celebrations Literature Matters: RSL 200, an event series bringing together RSL Fellows and some of the world’s best-known writers to explore the impact of literature on their lives.
Brian Eno, musician, producer, visual artist and activist, first came to prominence as a founding member of Roxy Music. His visionary production includes albums with Talking Heads, Devo, U2, Laurie Anderson and Coldplay, while his list of collaborations include recordings with David Bowie, David Byrne, Grace Jones, Karl Hyde and James Blake. His visual experiments with light and video continue to parallel his musical career with exhibitions all over the globe.
David Mitchell is the author of novels including Cloud Atlas (2004), The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet (2010) The Bone Clocks (2014) Slade House (2015) From Me Flows What You Call Time (2016) and most recently Utopia Avenue. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2013. Twice shortlisted for the Booker Prize, he has won the John Llewellyn Rhys, Geoffrey Faber Memorial and South Bank Show Literature Prizes, among others, and been named a Granta Best Young British Novelist. In 2018, he won the Sunday Times Award for Literary Excellence. Kieran Yates (Chair) is a freelance journalist, broadcaster and documentary maker with a focus on current affairs, culture and politics.

Just bought a copy of Utopia Avenue, and I have been a fan of Mr. Eno for years (have a stack of the Oblique Strategies cards and I refer to them every day). Thank you so much for this. I have been trying to get back to my normal musical practice and it can be hard staring at the walls during the lockdown with just my guitar and record collection. We all need to get back to something that we can all enjoy and love again.

Wow Radio Garden so cool - thanks Brian :-) Have rushed off and bought Thousand Autumns and Utopia Ave. for my Kindle - oh yes !! re deadlines (54:30) I heard Dan Lanois say about the U2 albums he worked on, that they were never finished - just released... !! hahahaha Also notion of doing at least one thing I don't fancy doing is quite cool. Let's see how I get on with that - I have always suspected that the difference between success and failure often boils down pretty much to one's ability to do essential things one doesn't want to do, in time... As Douglas Adams once remarked, "I love the sound deadlines make as they whizz past."

The short attention span or high tendency to become bored quickly prompted me to write sections which are unconnected, but which provide such readers with a variety of worlds to enter as they read. Some people I'd imagine such as musicians and filmmakers might find that very entertaining compared to a straight storyline which ticks the usual narrative rules. Self publishing can promote experimentation. Brian.... Best wishes from LA, my last few days here. Back to Dublin. Here He Comes.

Would have been awesome if the interviewer stopped interrupting Brian and David. They were bouncing off each other and she would just kill the conversation
