We are all familiar with physical, industrial robots, but what about robots that work in offices? In fact, they are already taking up posts around the world alongside their human counterparts. What opportunities does the Virtual Workforce present, and why are organisations choosing them to facilitate better service, faster growth and to react more quickly to market opportunities? This talk examines the art of the possible and how a Virtual Workforce can increase both the job satisfaction of human workers and transform the way that enterprises and global service providers deliver value.
David Moss is CTO and Co-founder of Blue Prism Limited, a UK tech company formed in 2001 to pursue the dream of delivering the vision of robotics into the oce environment. David is a technologist and thought leader in the Robotic Process Automation movement and a pioneer in the creation of the Virtual Workforce concept.

Does raising productivity actually raise wages? When it requires fewer people to do the same amount of work, yes and no. The individual worker may make more money, but there are fewer people working. Therefore fewer people are making wages. Just something to think about.

The problem is that organizations cannot imagine the customers' points of view, only 5he organization's point of view. Customer needs are NON-identical. When I call my smartphone for a tech problem, it is often necessary to talk to 5 people AFTER 4 calls just to get through the robotic answering platform. Over a 4 month period while my account was paid in full, my smartphone provider's staff turned my phone service off 3 times. I am convinced it was because the new service contractor did not know how to do the job. In every instance, the problem does not gey solved until I reach a HUMAN being who had sufficient expertise actually to do the job. Many particularly young employees are sitting at the desks, answering the phones and NOT getting the job done because they don't know how. But the robotic answering platform cannot even perceive customer goals--only a very narrowly constructed vocabulary--that too frequently leads the customer nowhere at all. Companies that care about KEEPING customers don't turn them over to robotic employees or robots.

It is the simcard that needs to be activated, not the phone? Which carrier did he buy a subscription from? If I buy a new subscription here in Norway it is up and running in 5 minutes. AI won't help David Moss become a better consumer :)

5 minutes is a bit long - my usual experience is it's up and running before you get out the door of the shop :P

You might get it turned on instantly.. but it is not fully active. It might not work in certain areas, or if there is a lot of activations that moment. Plus Cell phones is not the best example. I believe insurance, medical treatment, newspaper companies, advertising companies, TV studios, retail really needs it more. It has it in getting the products made and to the store.. but once in the store it's touched daily, over na over put back on the shelf, moved from one isle to another. Why not automate that?

In Costa Rica when you buy the SIM card it's already preactivated. They are both post-paid and pre-paid.

Activated is not the same as fully functional on the full network. I Used to work for cell company. It might work instantly but it might not work everywhere and not be able to access all functions. Activated just means can be used. Which is fine.

Okay, I am so glad I am not the only one. I use a cheap af, carrier. Takes about five minutes to get set up and calling. Yes, he needs help being a better consumer.

One thing which is often forgotten in these grandeur automatisation visions is that there are people who need those boring, mundane and repetitive jobs. It's a fact that some people are not so bright and are not meant for brain tickling jobs. If all those mundane jobs are erased those no so bright persons are left without any work.

One thing about all these robot supporters .They assume the everybody else Is makeing in Ethical behavior just like them .Just because a person can cut cost with a robot does not Mean they should .A human being Is not A unnecessary expense .People are the ones who created the work to

There's nothing new here. Computers have always been about automating processes, among other things. It's also naive to think, that adding robots will necessarily benefit the employees.

The Problem is: AI and Robotics is Great, but only for the Rich/Company Owners! They will have in the long term only Robots working for them. And the rest of the world will be unemployed and poor. (And Yes I am a computer scientist working in/with AI, writing this! I think AI is great, but will most likely only profit the ones who already have the most!)

What happens when AI can do "humanistic " interactions? Why would you need a human? This is dangerous thinking. In moderation, its not so bad. But once automation progresses to its logical end, humans will be irrelevant.

Let the worker decide if they think that their tele is big job and move on to something else will you feel who tells are Still collecting a pay check and earning their money the right way .I don't know what horrible cell phone but I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes cellphone to be connected .I think you are operating on a false premise

The challenge is to put everyone out of work so nobody will be making any wages so nobody will have any money so nobody will buy any products so the robots will be put out of work. Solution: have the robots start to buy the products which the robots made.

What a creepy guy. Robotic Process Automation as a solution against the problems that were deliberately caused by the same agents that are now presenting to you RPA as a solution, tadaaaaaa! For example RPA as a solution against having to wait too long in line or for a customer service employee to help you. Why not pay those people a bit more than the starvation minimum wage so they will have the incentive to help you faster or as incentive for more people to do that work, rather than downsizing the workforce through automation.
