Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Amazing what JDJones got started with the 300 Whisper.

The 300 Whisper has come a long way. From obscure cartridge for culling deer in urban areas to the mainstream & ARs.

I like the 450 Bushmaster in my AR-15. The 425 grain subsonic loads from Black Butterfly are the best subsonic ammo that I have tried for hogs.

I'm really liking the 8.6 for the penetration and wound cavity but in communist Canada it's basically non-existent.

Seeing the performance of the 8.6 blackout from garand thumb video on it really impressed me on that round. It just seems to wanna keep going forever.

338 whisper subsonic used 7mm bench rest case to do the same thing, Nothing new here.

What's new is it's an ar chambering different barrel twist. Pretty big difference.
@cbob3605
@cbob3605 Месяц назад
I was told that subsonic bullets do more terminal damage with a higher twist rate. The 8.6 has a 1:3 twist rate which gives the bullet a very high RPM. I was told that high RPM increases terminal performance of the bullet.

I don't know. I've seen a bunch of ballastic gel tetsing for the 8.6 blackout. I wasn't too impressed. I watched a 168 grain 308 damn near explode a gel block. Way more impressed with tbe 308 win.
@cbob3605
@cbob3605 25 дней назад
@@josephmandragoran4262 yeah but that’s always going to happen with supersonic bullets. If you loaded the 308 up with a subsonic bullet it would suck.
@josephmandragoran4262
@josephmandragoran4262 25 дней назад
@@cbob3605 I will stick to my regular 308 and regular bolt guns. I don't mind wearing hearing protection. Especially with how good they've become. And recoil isn't anything with the improvement to muzzle breaks. I know when I hit something it will die.

The .338 spectre is more accessible despite not being commerical. It functions in ar-15s, uses 6.8/.224 valk magazines and bolt and pushes a 180 grain nosler accubond-tipped at 1950 fps from a 16 inch barrel while still being designed for 300 grain subsonic loads which also cycle the action. As a bonus it uses standard 9mm pistol cans . Uppers are abit less than $600 and loaded ammo is south of $40 . Plus reloading supplies...The sbr uppers also have a 1moa guarantee with sbr ammo. 180 grain @ 1950 fps (even 1800 fps from the 16 inch barrel ) is more " powerful" than a typical .30-30 wcf with 170s in a 20 inch barrel . Handloaders have a good selection of bullets from 165 grains to 300. It really deserves more awareness .
@93rwolf
@93rwolf Месяц назад
Yeah but being 1950fps is far from subsonic.

What’s silly is commenting this when it’s clear that you have zero understanding of the cartridge and why the 1 in 3 twist makes absolute sense. 😂 do better guy, get educated instead of making dumb ass comments

Higher the mass and lower the speed, higher the spin to stabilize right?

One in three rifling twist will definitely shorten the life of the barrel. Too fast.

Wrong, it’s perfect for the cartridge, once again an ignorant man comments
@Zefferum

Do you not think that effect will be tempered by the slow speed? I’d agree with you if we were talking about supersonic rounds.

The 8.6 is a dead cartridge
@Zefferum
@Zefferum 4 месяца назад
That’s surprising to read. I can see so many applications. Perhaps more so being in the UK Sports shooters are encouraged to shoot suppressed to “keep the neighbours happy” Once your shooting suppressed it makes sense to try subsonic. And for deer culling, people are using powerful air rifles to keep the noise rapport down. I’d say the 8.6 does this without the downsides of hunting with air guns.

It’s overrated…. Y’all have fun with that About like Glock..
@mattandrews8528
@mattandrews8528 Год назад
It’s absolutely not overrated, it’s simply new and overpriced atm, just like .300blk was at its start. Now look at it, 8.6blk will be the same way in a few years. Just because you can’t appreciate the subsonic lethality doesn’t mean it’s overrated, it’s no gimmick. You just don’t understand how effective the subsonic pre segmented all copper .338 300grn projectiles are. Ignorance is no excuse for hate, you simply fear what you don’t understand when you have a closed mind.
